Already at uni (loving the course, not my dickhead flatmates) so this question doesn't apply to me!

HOWEVER! My girlfriend wanted to study Fashion Photography and/or Textiles at university (preferably London) but has decided against it now due to the rising costs.

Woot fellow Stafford students! First year Games Design is a mix i will admit but once you go second year it becomes very scripting heavy or modelling heavy depending on what you pick.
YEA

When they had the placements presentation at the start of the year and said Staffard students were taking over the world (the head staff in some EU headquarters in Germany is entirely Stafford students ) I didn?t exactly believe them but I do now :p

My flatmates are great, guessing you are in halls. Do you know Carol?
Im second year so no longer in the halls, although i was in 20 Haughton and knew Carol very well (tell her Curly says hi).

Stafford's main hook is that they have one of the highest rate of employment for its graduates although for games students its a little harder due to the increasing amount of competition from indie people. I will tell you now that your only going to get into the industry if your good enough, having a degree just means that employers will listen to you more and look at your work first.

Stop listening to the people who say it's £9000 a year, it isn't. At the most, universities can charge £6000 and in exceptional cases it can go up to £9000 however universities can choose to charge the same amount they have been charging for the past few years. Even then, you only have to pay it back when you're making £21000 a year which means you can easily pay it off and live a decent life at the same time.

Student loans will allow you to go to university, don't worry about it. I'm 16 and I'm not worrying about it. Anyway, there is the chance that it will be reduced by another party in the coming years. Don't write off going to university with your friends because of money. If you want to do something then you can't let trivial things like money get in your way.
^^Sounds about right to be honest. The money only needs to be paid off later so as long as you're willing to put the work in and live with the debts don't let it worry you.

I'm looking to do Physics and the main thing I've been told over and over by teachers etc is to look for bursaries if you need the extra financial help. Companies, unis and Institutions often have them.

Don't let it stress you. Good luck =)

I've applied to study computer science with games development in September, so I bloody well hope my parents can afford it!

Of course. I might end up going to Maastricht, though.
Awesome, same place where I study at right now.

OT:
Dutch grant system is getting a cut in its funds. Tuition for Dutch universities also gets increased next year. It's is a nice country to study though. Do not let money keep you from studying. What I ment to say is; The Netherlands isn't as good as it seems to you now.

Exceptional you say?

Nevertheless, my older brother won't go to university and my other older brother isn't going to any top one and my twin brother isn't planning to either, so I think my parents will be able to cover me going to a good university, especially since we are quite well off. I still strongly oppose these new fees, though.

Sorry but you will still end up in debt and if you want to do something like become a scientist, games journalist (Like me) or just something like art or philosophy then you will unlikely ever be able to really pay off that debt without a serious impact on your standard of living. This system has been designed for accounts, lawyers and bankers in true Tory fashion
I would be in debt if I went under the Labour policy. It's a few thousand more than I would have had to pay beforehand which, when compared to the amount of money I'd make in my lifetime after going to university, is nothing. I would much rather be in debt doing a job I love and making a lot of money than being sat around on my arse on the dole or doing a job I hate and free of debt. It wouldn't be a serious impact on the standard of living either, it would be a noticeable impact, but nothing significant.

It's not the fact that you can't get a student loan it's the fact you will have to pay it off for a lot longer and that will stop people who don't want to be bankers going to uni. What ever happened to that idea of free education for all and what happened to the Lib Dems supporting that. I know the country is low on funds but in our pursuit of saving money we will lose the very things we need that money for. And yes we CAN afford (barely) to go to uni but why SHOULD we have to get riddled with debt for 15 years just because we want to improve our intellect and improve Englands standing as a nation of intelligent people.

If you read my post i was saying WHY must WE be in DEBT for doing a job we love. All bigger fees will do is make more people go to uni to get high paying jobs (insert used examples) they hate just to pay off their loans or avoid the loans end up doing a low paying jobs they hate (shop assistant, cleaner or worst of all leader of the Lib Dems).

While my point about it just being money still stands... fucking rat bastards. The proposal that I read and was referred to by the BBC website said exceptional cases would charge £9000 but the cap was £6000. I was under the impression that an exceptional case was not the majority of universities. I just hope that the OFFA haven't/don't approve many universities to go over the £6000 cap.

become an engineer, you can cover any amount of student loans no problem

what annoys me is that if you got a degree in, say ancient greek and theatre, and couldnt get a job. the govt will not ask for your fees back, forcing the doctors, engineers etc to pay that loan as well as their own

Between the supposed rising costs of Uni and the amount of people applying to ones in the UK, it really is a cock(chicken) fight to secure a place.

Well I'm in my first year of A-levels (which is AS grade) so I won't start applying to universities till just after the end of summer most likely and by god I will try as hard as I can to get into a good one. Can anyone suggest a good Uni to go to learn game development? You know design, modeling, coding and all the amazing jazz behind it. I'm taking mathematics with mechanics, Film Studies, IT and Psychology for my A-levels if that helps and I also did Business Studies, French, ICT and (probably irrelevant) L and T for my optional GCSEs (though I'm still crap at french even though I got a B).

With rising university prices I probably won't be able to afford to (I'm 14). You don't need a visa to study in the EU so I might have to go the the Netherlands after I do my A-levels. I hear that the Dutch government gives grants to students form the EU but if I go there I'll need to learn Dutch to get a part-time job to pay for living costs. I could go to France instead as I already speak French but I don't know if I'll be able to afford it there either.

It's such a dilemma because I have the intelligence to become an engineer or a doctor although admittedly I don't actually know what I want to become yet.
come to canada eh

I think both engineers and doctors are awesome. This has absolutely nothing to do with the actual topic, but OP mentioned it and I felt it had to be said.

As far as I know (and I am NOT very knowledgeable on the subject), it can cost up to £9000 a year to go to university, I think for places like Oxford and Cambridge and the like. Everywhere else, it's probably lower, perhaps £6000? At any rate, I'm just going to do all the student loan shizzle and try not to worry about the crippling debt I'm going to be in for the remaining years of my young life! Hooray!

So yes, I do plan on university, absolutely regardless of the costs. As cheesy as it sounds, I love learning and knowledge, so I can't imagine not going. It's just always been the plan ever since I was a little kid: school, college, uni. I'd be devastated if I couldn't go -- for whatever reason -- and money is certainly not going to stop me.

Because the government can't pay for our university fees any more, they need to use taxes to pay for other things. Apparently a lot of tax payers didn't like having to pay for university fees as well.

You pay back a certain percentage that changes depending on your wage, so if you don't have a job or are earning next to nothing then you don't have do (and also probably wouldn't be able to) pay it back. Now as a doctor or engineer, reeling it in, you would have to pay it back yes. I wouldn't be annoyed at people who aren't earning much. It's all proportionate to how much you earn, they probably will be paying it back, but if you get a really good job then you'll be paying back more.

In the UK I would say Dundee and Stafford. As I said eariler on this thread currently at Stafford and both were recommended by one of my old teachers. Can't really say much about the design courses other then from my friends here there is a lot of graphics work in them.

I thought that the increase in university funds may have been needed to pay taxes to fill the treasury after money was stolen from it by the last treasurer?
