I probably would say it's QTE's. In a cutscene I want the option to go away and get myself a snack or a drink and not come back to find myself killed and I have to start over (I'm looking at you Resident Evil 4) I have actually rarely seen QTE's implemented well, one of the few times it has, it has been "Resident Evil: Umbrella chronicles" and "Resident Evil: Darkside chronicles" and I think the reason for that, is because it is a rail shooter and it is nice to get away from the monotony that can come from just shooting things. An example where I think QTE's are unnecessary is in "Resident Evil 4" for the reason I have stated above.

I voted for graphics over gameplay since I still would enjoy playing super mario 64 now, but I would like to be rid of regenerating health preferably

I hate games that inappropriately have guys spawn while you're playing, so you can't possibly ambush them.

Graphics never matter to me. Ever. If i were to make a game, graphics would be my smallest priority.

Caricature characters. The mega-macho-megamarine. The super effeminate Raiden type. The whingy emo. The woman with ridiculous breasts.

Ummm.... probably artificially enhancing difficulty by presenting the same enemy but with more health and damage. I think more advanced enemies should act a little different not be the same gun but now able to take two shotgun rounds to the face instead of one.

game where the developer puts choices in a game but which are achely not. for example paragon and renegade its all based on what the developers deems to be good or bad and then give the player benefits for picking one of them. also the fable game you eat meat so you are there for bad or black clothes make you evil.

Quick Time Events, hands down.

Every single other article on that list can be used to enhance gameplay if done properly (well, excluding graphics over gameplay; which speaks for itself).
There is not a quick time even, NOT ONE SINGLE QTE, that enhances gameplay.

When you put a QTE into a game, you are taking the player out of the game to play Simon Say's. The whole purpose of QTEs is to do enable complicated moves/cutscenes on a limited series of controls (rather than having to, y'know, TRY).
So what is the bloody point of doing that if the player is now require to pay attention to the fucking Simon Says prompts rather than the showboating move the QTE is supposed to enable?

The one and only game that even tries to use QTEs in an appropriate context is God of War, and there are games that accomplish what God of War is going for without the quick time events.

So even when God of War did QTEs well, it was already an outmoded concept.

In short: Quick Time Events are a simple "rush it out the door" time-hack for developers. It's a mechanic that pulls the player out of the experience; and every game that uses it immediately cheapens the experience because of it.

fucking escort missions

/thread

but if i was to pick one on there..

either underwater levels (fuck you, water temple)

or graphics over gameplay

i dont mind good graphics, thats awesome, but when you take that over the gameplay and the story of the game, your game can go to hell.

I had thought it meant cliche characters like the overly masculine fashion model or the ridiculously flamboyant homosexual but as the options stand I hate the instantly spawning enemies or when enemies spawn behind you with no reasonable explanation of how they got there.

Either amnesia or fetch quests. Neither of those add anything to the game. The first is just a plot device to prevent then having to either write a decent backstory and the second is just to pad gameplay with.
What about Amnesia: The Dark Descent? That was an amazing game with a great story about you having amnesia

OT: Graphics over game-play is what I voted for, but after thinking a bit more I realized a crappy single-player put into a game known for multi-player, like CoD or Halo is much worse, mainly because they don't have to put in a single-player but they do anyway and it sucks horribly. MAG was incredibly successful and the story was of you joining one of 3 armies and fighting online in the different game modes.

i went for graphics over gameplay, as good gameplay should not have instantly respawning enemies or instant kill attacks.
There is a lot of hate for losing abilities, i've only come accross it in god of war 2/3 and i thought it was done fine.
