Toss up between Connery and Moore. Both had the Bond character just right, however, i'll go for Connery, just because he showed Bond's cold, cruel streak which is now sadly missing.

Connery, then Craig. Pierce Brosnan was a horrible Bond IMO, at least for all the movies after Goldeneye, that was the only decent one.

I happen to think that Moore encompasses most of the traits that make Bond... Bond. Connery is the most bad-ass hands down, but I think he's a little rough around the edges. He plays Bond like Bogart would play him. It's cool, but I don't feel the character is like that. On the other hand, Brosnan is all British charm and ladies' man, but you get the feel like he has a double to do every scene that isn't pleasin' the ladies. Lazenby and Dalton don't work for me. Dalton doesn't look like an Englishman (or a hero) and Lazenby... I dunno. He just wasn't convinving to me. I haven't seen the new one, so I can't really say anything about Craig.

So while Moore is definitly one of the "softer" Bonds, I think his portrayal of the character hits most of the marks while not topping any of them.

It was a toss-up between Connery and Craig for me; both capture the "elegant thug" aspect very well, whereas most of the other Bonds forgot the "thug" part. In the end I came down in favour of Craig because he came closest to the Bond in the novels... though it was pretty much a coin flip.

That being said, I enjoyed Lazenby's performance and thought that On Her Majesty's Secret Service was one of the better Bond films... he just needed to look a bit more like a killer and I'd have put him up with Connery.

I was torn for the same reasons you were. In the end, I have to go with Craig because I think he's heads and shoulders above Connery as an actor, if only his equal as a visual icon.

I come from the 80s. Roger Moore
Go watch all of the Connery Bond movies, then come back and tell us your opinion. Connery wipes the floor with Moore.

I watch Bond films for the comedy.

Moore Wins.

AFAIS Craig manages to take away all the balls from a Bond movie. I mean come on. They are playing Poker and no plot to destroy the world...

Connery is classic. Close second.

Interesting range of opinions in here. My first Bond was Roger Moore in View to a Kill and while I was young I preferred his movies.

That's what I'm talking about! I, too, liked Secret Service more than most people; partly because it stuck very close to the book. Even the unhappy ending. It's a shame they kept working Blofeld into every movie in those days, I was annoyed to see his people show up in From Russia With Love.
Anyway. Bond was consistently described as a cruel-looking man, someone who could pass as a thug or a crook (and did- in the novels at least). Dalton had some of this, but Craig has it in spades. I can understand what those of you who want big comic-book plots about saving the world are talking about, but I think those stories did the character a disservice. I like where the "new" movies are taking things.

Daniel Craig right now, subject to change if his next movie bombs. My personal order:

1. Daniel Craig
2. Timothy Dalton
3. Sean Connery
4. Pierce Brosnan
5. George Lazenby
6. A rock
7. Roger Moore

...That would be the 60's. And to any interested, I am currently working on a series of movie reviews featuring the entire series. Next is Goldfinger.

If I had to criticise the other Bonds:

Dalton was actually pretty good, just not well-served by the scripts and maybe a touch too "flip". Both made it difficult to believe that his Bond could actually be hurt, and that robbed his movies of a lot of the dramatic potential.

Moore had great charisma and did an excellent job portraying the "playboy" aspect but sometimes it was tough to see him as the stone-killer he needed to be as a 00-level agent. When he did hit that (certain scenes in Golden Gun and Live and Let Die, for instance) he was great; when he was too much the fashion plate (View to a Kill) or carrying on with a smirk that was lost. Moore also had to endure the most "cartoony" scripts of the series, Moonraker most notably in that list.

Brosnan was just too polished. I like him very much as a person and actor, but as Bond he was too smooth. Also, I'm sad to say, Brosnan was a victim of the gadget mentality in scripts to a greater degree than Moore though at least he didn't have to fight a villain who could survive reentry.
