Try as I might, I never could get into RDR. Something about it just never clicked with me. It's a shame, I'd like to know the story... Here's hoping they make a movie of it.

They all excel at different categories, as for gameplay and multiplayer I would say that GTA 4 is the favorite for me.

But a piece of my heart still belongs to Red Dead Redemption, mainly due to the storytelling and the atmosphere. I almost cried at the ending.

San Andreas. I bought RDR when it was on sale on PSN a bit ago, but my TV was too small to play it (couldn't read the text on the screen). So, after I fixed the first world problem, I forgot to go back and play it more... I should probably do that at some point.

Cant decide between Max Payne and GTA: San Andreas.
I absolutely love both of them and cant really say which I like better ans they are too different.

EDIT: Screw it.. voted for San Andreas. I loved Max Payne 1, but 2 and 3.. not so much. San Andreas has multiplayer and a lot more content, so if Id have to choose Id go for San Andreas, even though Max Payne 1 is super close.

Red Dead Revolver.
I like it better than Redemption and it's quite different from RockStar's other titles due to it initially being a Capcom developed game.

It's a linear third person shooter inspired by a multitude of Spaghetti Westerns (the main character being an obvious nod to Clint Eastwood, in particular), and the soundtrack being entirely composed of old Western OSTs (meaning that not a scrap of music was actually made for this game and it's just old movie tracks everywhere).

With all of that said, it's very different from the other things that we have seen from RockStar.
I have many fond memories of playing it, definitely had a better time playing it than Redemption (though I won't hesitate for a second to say that Redemption had more developed, gritty characters). Aiming felt real nice in that game, too!

Close second would be...either Bully or Max Payne 3.
The earlier has a bloody great soundtrack and the latter was just great in many regards.

I really want to say Red Dead Redemption, but that game was actually a bit of a disappointment. Rockstar writes some excellent dialogue but the story itself has a few issues and the gameplay is really clunky and awkward at times.

So... probably Max Payne 3.

I grew up on Vice City; put so many hours in that game. I like it more than San Andreas mostly because I like the characters more in Vice City, though the lasting appeal/playability in San Andreas is better now.

Both Manhunt games were very influential in my opinion. They tried things other games hadn't tried before, and if not for the failings of the ESRB they should have gone down as great games.

Also Max Payne 3 is my favorite on your list.

And for the failings of the ESRB; that is my opinion. If you watch the uncensored A/O rated executions in Manhunt 2 the gore isn't really any worse than that of Fallout 3, which was released after the censored version of Manhunt 2 but before the A/O version. The only difference is the setting, in Manhunt you truely are a murderer trying to be brutal. Which in my opinion isn't much worse than being a random person who shoots other humans for their armor and guns.

Of their recent stuff? Red Dead. But of all their stuff? GTA 3. The originals had always been in a league of their own but when 3 came out showcasing a new 3D engine it was just so different to anything else out there and I ended up sinking far too many hours into it. I know that from a gameplay standpoint Vice City and San Andreas only really improved on 3 but for some reason they didn't grab me like 3 did.

Glad to see Bully is getting some love. Personally I feel its the closest thing to a perfect sandbox game that I've come across; the available area scaled naturally, the missions were kept fun and entertaining, there was quite a lot to do outside of the missions, there was enough benefit in completing the side-quests and lessons to make players want to do them and the range of customisation was impressive (both character and environment).

What made it most loveable however was the characters, from their personalities through to their voice actors. I remember when Bully was set to be released and the various groups were kicking off about how wrong it was to have a game that glorified bullying but things settled pretty quickly when people realised that while Jimmy can be a bully hes generally the hero and more of a misunderstood underdog.

Out of interest, if you're a Bully lover whats your favourite faction? I'd have to plump for the Preps I think, loved some of the lines that came out in their missions.

Is it awful that I've not played a one of those games listed? Only Rockstar game I've played was L.A. Noire, and that ranked a "Meh".

Red Dead Revolver.
OF COURSE! How could I have forgotten Red Dead Revolver? It was the whole reason I was so excited for Redemption in the first place. If only Red Dead Redemption's gunplay had been closer to Revolver's instead of going such a boring, standard route it would have been way more fun to play.

As it stands, MP3 almost seems closer from a purely mechanical standpoint. Lot's of running and gunning, firing from the hip, a simplistic cover system that you generally don't rely on... Combine the two and you'd probably get my personal best-game-ever.

Vice City man! Loved that game! Everything from the typical mindless GTA violence to the crazy as hell cheats and amazing characters! I just loved every damn second of that game!

Bully was easily one of my favourite games from the last gen and it had one of the best soundtracks but I really have to give it up to Red Dead Redemption which may actually be my favourite game of this generation. Everything from the graphics to the writing to the soundtrack was top notch and it was one of the few games that I feel actually earned that Mature rating for something other than superficial bullshit. It had such a tragic, but fitting ending and further enforced the notion that violence is a perpetual cycle.

Grand Theft Auto IV is another game that I think earned its Mature rating for reasons beyond the typical violence, swearing, blah blah blah "somebody think of the children" reasons and I think I'm one of the few people who actually enjoyed going out with the major NPC's. Not because I enjoyed bowling or playing darts or any of the other time killers, but because I liked listening to the banter between Niko and whatever character (minus Dwayne, he was just a downer) I was with. Each of them had a lot more to their character and you really started to get a feeling of why they acted the way they did, like Brucie's crushing low self-esteem leading to him becoming an over-the-top roid monkey, or Packie's feelings of inadequacy within his family, feeling like whatever he does is never good enough, or even Roman's love of the American dream being constantly fought by Niko's pessimistic attitude. All of it culminated into something that wasn't really what the previous three Grand Theft Auto games were about, but really made a statement and had a lot more to say about the human condition and the American Dream then I think people give it credit for.

Red Dead Redemption. Truly a (buggy) masterpiece in my eyes.

An interesting narrative, well crafted environments with plenty to do, quirky characters (Especially Irish. That guy was nuts), and dat ending... oh god, dat ending.

And the music was very fitting of the atmosphere.

I just love RDR to bits. It's one of the best games I've played this gen.
My thoughts exactly, it's still one of the most satisfying gaming experience I've had thus far.
Also,
and dat ending... oh god, dat ending.
Yeah. So many manly tears...

Well, they kinda did. Granted, this is not representative of the full game or story, but it's a pleasant watch, I suppose.

EDIT: Forgot to place link, herey'go http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZUUVV2rjoc

Also, first post, woo!

Only played GTA4 and RDR, and I can't say I enjoyed either of them... at all. However RDR is more immersive and come on, how many games are properly set in the western era?
EDIT: apart from all those crappy ones...

I'll go with San Andreas with Bully a damn close second. I simply put the most time into San Andreas & have replayed it to death.
