how about a sword made of light? i know i've heard of one before... a light sword? a photon saber? ... hmm.

i like longswords usually. fairly strong but with the ability for use of a shield in the offhand.
I think the sword you're looking for is Callandor, and its not actually made of light, it just glows real bright when used for it's intended purpose.

All purposeful misunderstandings aside, I prefer a good Bastard Sword. Usable in a sword + shield combo, or two-handed by itself, the Bastard Sword has some flexibility to it. And flexibility is usually a good thing.

Longswords.

They're like the goldilocks of swords. Not to short, not too long, just right!

Plus, Dual Wielding is more stylish then 2handers. :p

Currently in Skyrim I'm using Greatswords, although I like longswords in general.
However I really wish more games had scimitars.

Like this:

I absolutely love the look.

I'm a fan of the Rapier, but I'm gonna go with curved. I used a scimitar in Skyrim for a little over half my playthrough.

Bat'leth should win hands down.

If I had to choose a sword that has actually really existed in history I would have to go with either the katana or the kukri.
1.
BAT'LETH!
Although, I do have to say, Mek'leth is more suited for me, personally.

2. Kukri is not a sword, it is a knife. The big version of kukri is falcata or kopis. Not kopesh, that's quite different and looks a bit like a big Mek'leth.

OT:
I'm sad to say, while gaming, I usually pick weapons I can actually use with some competence IRL. So that means sniper rifles and pistols for shooters and longswords and bastard swords for fantasy sort of games.
So my pick is longsword.
I'd opt for a bastard, but due to my height, and speed rather than strength, IRL I usually use a longsword like a bastard.
Live History Group. Don't judge me.

Unless I'm playing a wizard, which is my kind of escapism.

Dual greatswords. Because if you're going to have a swordfight, you might as well maximize your DPS and look ridiculously awesome, right?

This really depends on the game, I usually prefer speed over damage but usually I'll just pick what works best for any given game. No point is sticking to a less effective weapon just because you like the look of it.

In real life however I'd pick a spear over a sword any day. You see the the really important thing about spears is that all the action happens on the pointy end and usually that is as far away from you as possible :)

I'll assume Khopesh would fit under Curved. At any rate, that is my favorite kind of "sword", which makes me sad there's so few of them in games.

I'd go with a long sword. usually in most RPGs like Morrowind they tend to be the most powerful weapons, and in RL they do look rather badass, though then again, just about most swords look really cool.

I've always loved longswords in gaming. Preferably something that looks like a sensible and respectable weapon. Bonus points if I can craft/customize it myself, and extra bonus points if I can waltz through the rest of the game with it loyally cleaving buttock. The Lightsaber (long, single blade) in KotOR probably sticks with me the most, and the Dragonbone Sword in Skyrim is a nice second.

It always feels right using just the one blade.
