With newer games there are so many demo's available that pirating for the sake of trying the game out is no longer a valid argument. For the older games, perhaps, but for the most part you should either rent, buy, or even borrow one of the newer games if your not into the demo.

How is borrowing different from pirating? Simple, the same way borrowing a chair is differnt from stealing it off the cargo ship bringing it ashore. Its already private property and the developers have already been paid for it thus what is done with it is the owners own concern.

But thats my two cents.

Old games: Fine.
For a trial: No. That is just one small step away from pirating for the whole game.
Whole games: No. If you pirate them you are a thief and should be caught.
Plain and simple

If a game comes out for PC that my rig can handle and I want it, I'm definitely pirating it. If it turns out to be an awful game that's not worth my money I won't buy it. If it turns out to be a great game, I'll delete it from my HDD and pony up the cash for it.

Unless it's an indie. I never understood the hooligans who pirate those.

Edit: Unless it has DRM, if it does I will most certainly pirate it and never, ever give them my money. When I buy something I expect to own it forever, not until I upgrade my PC or change my OS three times.

I'll buy newer games for a console I own, but I'm not about to go out and purchase a SNES instead of just downloading ZSNES.

Heh, piracy is for cheap skates like myself. It's just so hard to justify buying something when a better easier to get copy is a 30 min download away. Though I will do redbox movies on my way home from work just because it's convenient and only a dollar to rent a movie. Games I buy for some reason... Movies and music not so much lol
Isn't it hard to support music when 99% of the profits go to the record label and not the band?

Support the band; buy a t-shirt at the show.
Most bands don't make much money off of album sales alone. But they can definitely LOSE a lot of money if they don't cover the cost of promotion, studio use, etc. I often hear this as an excuse to pirate music. If album sales are low, bands lose money and potentially get dropped from a label.

There are certain developers who let you play their game without a cd in the drive, without any 50 digit codes, without logging into fivethousand platforms, without checking my hard drive for burning tools. They even let us install the game on different machines so we can play with friends. Those games do not deserve to be pirated.

Than there are certain publishers who literally treat their customers like criminals, checking their every move, analyzing their habits for better ingame advertisments, only let you install the game you BOUGHT (which means you own the copy, right?) 3 times (hell, I've got more machines in my flat then that). As for those games, which treat me like a criminal waiting to happen, why should I not act the part, avoid an awful lot of inconvenience for me, and the inconvenience of counting my money for the company?

I tend to pirate old and obscure games that are generally hard to get hold of and quick to download.

You shouldn't ever pirate though. It is theft. I don't like any of the justifications people offer for it (like how game companies or record producers are charging too much), that is no excuse. You may still choose to not buy the game or CD, but you shouldn't be having it both ways. People only pirate because they are oppurtunists. Don't believe any of their rationalisations.

If a game is extremely old and impossible to find anywhere else I might pirate it. Newer games I buy all the way, because I want to support my favorite game developers for their hard work.

Now I know it is probably just as illegal, but if I was a game designer of, say, The Elder Scrolls I: Arena, I'd want people to play it, even though it can't be bought in stores anymore. That's just what Bethesda did with Elder Scrolls I & II, by the way, so some game developers feel the same way.

I have never, and will NEVER EVER partake in piracy of movies, video games, music, tv shows.. nothing. Piracy is wrong, illegal and RIDICULOUSLY STUPID. Because of people who do piracy.. the music industry & especially films, are doomed.
I feel no sympathy to those who do it, and do not feel bad about saying so. Its wrong of you, and that's that. Be it crap games, old games, new games (music/movies/tv shows etc).. its wrong. Stop it. Please. For the sake of us who enjoy going to a cinema to see movies, or picking up the newest video game.
Oh c'mon? Not even abandonware? This is software where the company has gone under, no one owns the rights to the game anymore and is actually LEGAL to download and distribute! This accounts for over half the nes, snes, genesis and older games. I guess that technically isn't pirating but w/e.
If nobody owns the distribution rights, that isn't technically pirating, is it?

The same can be said about Video Games, and all the developers you seem to think you are supporting. I have no concrete numbers, so let's make one up. 97% of all video game money you spend goes to Activision.
Who said I buy from activision? They're not a nice company now a days and the latest comments to come from that CEO makes me want to stab him.

But the publishers actually DO things for the developers, produce the game, help fund the game, give them credit, get the games distributed, and advertise for them.

Record labels get them known (sometimes) but for the most part they pay them very little unless they're a huge hit. Otherwise they just ride on the bands success
Sorry I meant you in the plural form. I always forget I've quoted someone, and just keep talking, or at least use the quote as an example of what I'm about to say. It's called a quote for a reason. I was sarcastically saying that all money anyone ever spends will go to Activision.

Yes, okay the music corporation is a little more extreme in exploitation than in Video Games, but it's still pretty similar. If anything, all those extra things you pointed out are just another form of investment. After all, selling a disc that cost pennies to produce, at $80, brings in a massive profit, even after the retailer gets paid. Non of that profit, though, goes to the developers. They've already been paid their hourly wage. The most they get is to keep their underpaid jobs.

I hardly get the opportunity to get out of town much, so I end up getting music off the internet. This has worked out well because without it, I wouldn't have been able to develop my musical tastes as much as I have. Without it, I'd still be listening to my old Parkway Drive, Killswitch Engage and Nightwish albums that I legitimately bought at a record store a few years ago... and even then, I wouldn't have even heard of THOSE bands (except for Killswitch - I heard about them in high school but developed a further interest in them through piracy just the same) if it wasn't for good ol' piracy. The closest thing to a music store here in this town is the entertainment section at The Warehouse in town, and even then their selection is retardedly limited, comprised purely of old and mainstream bands whose names are so common and well-known they're practically programmed into your head at birth. Without piracy, my musical library would stand a 95% chance of being comprised of completely mainstream/boring shit and YouTube techno vids.

Rare/very old games and abandonware? Sure. I occasionally pirate them, but only when I can't find them on Trademe first. I can't legitimately buy and download them from GOG because I don't have a viable credit card for that method. This also prevents me from buying games off Steam. A recent example was when I was unable to buy Garry's Mod the legit way (due to both a lack of credit card and my dad's illogical refusal to allow me to borrow his - he considered it a "scam"), so I ended up copying a Garry's Mod torrent from my younger brother who DLed it earlier. If/when I get a viable credit card, I'll buy it the legit way but right now this is all I can do if I want to play around with it.

I will not let copyright laws, lack of money or lack of availability stop me from having fun with my foremost passion in life.

I will only buy something I really, absolutely like. I've already built up a nice collection of legally bought games and film DVDs because of this "philosophy". So yes, I could be considered an "honest pirate". I don't pirate for the sake of pirating or because I'm cheap. I pirate because I'm poor. And it's a safe way for me to decide whether I want something or not, as well as whether it stands a good chance of running on my PC, in cases where demos are unavailable. I refuse to waste money on products that WON'T WORK.

DRM is also a concern. Games with retarded DRM implementation are more likely to be pirated by myself, even if I do end up legally buying the game for the sake of adding it to my collection of physical copies.

I love when people justify their anti-piracy stance with "it's illegal!", and I love it even more when I found out the same people happen to be avid pot smokers. Not to mention, something being illegal does not equate at all to being morally wrong. You'd have to be a dumbass to think this. There's a LOT more to something being morally reprehensible than whether it's legal or not.

Also, comparing game/music piracy to stealing a brand new Ferrari car from a dealership is just flat-out fallacious. Yes, you might argue that cars and games both require resources to be made, but:
Cars = Each INDIVIDUAL car requires considerable resources to be manufactured.
Games/Music = Requires considerable resources to create just the original product; after this, creating additional copies of the product requires only a copy and paste.

If you are a hardcore pirate and just download everything for the sake of having it and redistributing it to people. That is wrong. Also if you ever pirate something and then turn around and sell it to someone. That is flat out wrong and if caught should do time or pay hefty fines.
I 100% agree with this.
