I hardly get the opportunity to get out of town much, so I end up getting music off the internet. This has worked out well because without it, I wouldn't have been able to develop my musical tastes as much as I have. Without it, I'd still be listening to my old Parkway Drive, Killswitch Engage and Nightwish albums that I legitimately bought at a record store a few years ago... and even then, I wouldn't have even heard of THOSE bands
(except for Killswitch - I heard about them in high school but developed a further interest in them through piracy just the same) if it wasn't for good ol' piracy. The closest thing to a music store here in this town is the entertainment section at The Warehouse in town, and even then their selection is retardedly limited, comprised purely of old and mainstream bands whose names are so common and well-known they're practically programmed into your head at birth. Without piracy, my musical library would stand a 95% chance of being comprised of completely mainstream/boring shit and YouTube techno vids.
Rare/very old games and abandonware? Sure. I occasionally pirate them, but only when I can't find them on Trademe first. I can't legitimately buy and download them from GOG because I don't have a viable credit card for that method. This also prevents me from buying games off Steam. A recent example was when I was unable to buy Garry's Mod the legit way
(due to both a lack of credit card and my dad's illogical refusal to allow me to borrow his - he considered it a "scam"), so I ended up copying a Garry's Mod torrent from my younger brother who DLed it earlier. If/when I get a viable credit card, I'll buy it the legit way but right now this is all I can do if I want to play around with it.
I will not let copyright laws, lack of money or lack of availability stop me from having fun with my foremost passion in life.
I will only buy something I really, absolutely like. I've already built up a nice collection of legally bought games and film DVDs because of this "philosophy". So yes, I could be considered an "honest pirate". I don't pirate for the sake of pirating or because I'm cheap. I pirate because I'm poor. And it's a safe way for me to decide whether I want something or not, as well as whether it stands a good chance of running on my PC, in cases where demos are unavailable. I refuse to waste money on products that WON'T WORK.
DRM is also a concern. Games with retarded DRM implementation are more likely to be pirated by myself, even if I do end up legally buying the game for the sake of adding it to my collection of physical copies.
I love when people justify their anti-piracy stance with "it's illegal!", and I love it even more when I found out the same people happen to be avid pot smokers. Not to mention, something being illegal does not equate at all to being morally wrong. You'd have to be a dumbass to think this. There's a LOT more to something being morally reprehensible than whether it's legal or not.
Also, comparing game/music piracy to stealing a brand new Ferrari car from a dealership is just flat-out fallacious. Yes, you might argue that cars and games both require resources to be made, but:
Cars = Each INDIVIDUAL car requires considerable resources to be manufactured.
Games/Music = Requires considerable resources to create just the original product; after this, creating additional copies of the product requires only a copy and paste.
If you are a hardcore pirate and just download everything for the sake of having it and redistributing it to people. That is wrong. Also if you ever pirate something and then turn around and sell it to someone. That is flat out wrong and if caught should do time or pay hefty fines.
I 100% agree with this.
