Soul Calibur. Although IV sucked in comparison to II, it was still fun, and the weapon on weapon combat is a blast. Make the training stage more accessible, tone down ring-outs, remove skills, and remove stats from clothing (As well as bringing back Team Battle), and it would be much, MUCH better.
I'll will have to agree with you about that ring out thing, i've lost many a matches from a cheap kick or throw (especially Kilk and The Apprentice. The clothing stats and weapon stats weren't too bad... but you normally have to make your characters look like douche bags before the stats are really high. Though i did manage to make a reasonable Cassandra class.
Stats on weapons can stay, those are fine, but as you said, you have to make your character look like a douche to make them good. Often I got a character looking exactly how I liked, only to discover that their stats blew goats.
yep yep, my character looks awesome but i have 75% life and zero damage reduction.

Garouden Breakblow : Fist or Twist - no other 3D fighting game ever matched how much fun I've had with that game and how unusually deep it was for a fighting game that's not known mainstream.

For 2D fighting game, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Probably the most unique 2D fighting game Capcom ever made.

i remember playing soul caliber 3 for hours with my friends, and creating crazy characters with the awesome character customization.

for example, my friend made a little girl with Astaroth fighting style. as strange as that is, it was funny watching this little girl throwing people across the arena.

It has to be Street Fighter for me. SCII gets an honourable mention as well though, that was one of the best games on the gamecube. I haven't played many other fighters outside of those series though, was thinking of trying Blazblue but not to sure as I prefer slower fighters.

BlazBlue forever. I have SF4 and it was fun, but had to get BlazBlue once Continuum Shift came out. SF4's pace is just too slow for me. I'm sad that I missed 3rd Strike. It looks really interesting. Dead or Alive also seems fun, but I didn't play it long enough.

Blazblue isn't that much faster than Street Fighter I found, it had a rather moderate pace and it really depends on the character you use. If you wanted crack cocaine pacing then you play Guilty Gear or something along that line. The newer BB even has a tutorial mode and all that to get people into the game easier. Kinda wish the PSP version had that...more practice for on the road.

Definately Tekken for me.
Tekken 2 was the first fighting game I've ever played and I just followed the series on from there (although I still haven't been arsed to get Tekken 6.)

I'm a fan of a fair few fighters. Tekken, Street Fighter, Guilty Gear and Soul Calibur all jump straight to mind, while I also really liked the Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi series as well. If I were pushed for an overall favourite though, it'd probably be either Street Fighter or Guilty Gear.

I wish someone would re-do Killer Instinct. LOVED that game.
Me too. I waited for years in vain for a sequel to come out and all we got was a stupid arcade version and a 64 version that was 3D. That game has to be classic 2D otherwise doing the combos would be painful.

It was hard for me to choose between Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, but MK came out in top, mainly for nostalgic reasons.

guilty gear..... end of story, GET SOME.

also, REALLY soul calibur. the game you spam buttons and the idea of combos is completely gone from it.
The button spam only really works with characters like maxie, trying that on line will only get you so far till some one recognizes the patter then your in for a world of guard impacting, soul crushing, critical finishing pain... yes in that order.
sorry, just doesnt work for me. Ive never attempted to play at any high level. But play something like guilty gear at high level. Button mashing will ALWAYS get you killed. There is nothing to figure out about button mashing in guilty gear. It just doesnt work.
