It depends. As a Russian Canadian, I would enlist, if there was a genuine threat to either of these countries. I would not participate in any conflict between Canada and Russia.

Pretty tough question. I doubt anyone would really know until the question was asked of them in the actual situation. But honestly that's never going to happen because Australia is so isolated that there is no one to invade us. But if someone did then there is a good chance I would consider joining, especially because I have a few friends in the army, but even then I'd still have to think about it..... A lot.

I probably would not enlist for frontline duty since that?s a death trap.

Instead I would use my skills as an Aircraft Pilot and Aircraft Engineer to enrol with the Air Force or the MOD to help research and provide the equipment.

Though my reckoning is if someone declared on the UK or its allies and it escalates so far as to kill thousands of civilians then chances are the government would simply launch the nukes and kill a couple million more of them in a quest to show we?re serious.

It seems to me, that in the war you're describing, after a very short amount of time, there's not going to be any choice about joining up.

Volunteering early on would allow me the opportunity to choose my role, and thus avoid the Infantry.

Of course, this is under the assumption of me being a civvy, which I'm not, I'm already in, and already well placed to avoid death by heavy bombing by a well equipped enemy capable of enforcing air and artillery superiority.

If both countries have nukes, in theory, they may still have an all-out conventional war.

If its a world war scenario then yes. I'd join up as I have the intelligence to make it into the higher calibre rankings and classes or in general end up as an officer.

In short I wouldn't be the one going around stabbing people in the chest in a trench as I've killed so many people I've ran out of bullets. Even if I was killing I'd be operating some piece of technology.

I would if I could. Unfortunately, I'm, not allowed to. Spinal operation I had a while ago stops me.

I have asthma, so if i do get called up for any major war i'll probably get a nice desk job 20 miles behind the lines, not that i would be complaining.

That's for tanks, not helicopters. Also, won't be that helpful against missiles guided by something else anyway.

Being ex-Army and too old now for re-enlistment unless it was to train recruits, I would form or join a resistance group and do my part that way.

If a draft was introduced I'd probably be able to defer it for my education.
When Australia had conscription there was no full deferment for students. You got to finish your current year of study and that was that.
