If someone know almost nothing about a game, but is willing to learn and tries to understand things they are not a noob. Just an experienced player in the making. Jerks and ignorant people are noobs, regardless of their level.

Noob = Somebody who is bad at the game even tho he has played it for a while, naturaly comes with cheating since you mostly just cheat if you suck(unless it's just funtime).
Newbie = Guy who's bad simply because he's new.
Jerkass = All of the poll choices.
To use (for the first time I might add) a well known response : This.

I'm going to put out a call for some empathy here. We were all 'noobs' at some point. New gamers should be welcomed instead of ridiculed.

A person who is new to a game. That is my definition.
That's my definition of "newbie" mind you. Although discrete there are some differences between "newbie" and "noob", in my definition "newbie" is a player that is new to a game but, if cared for and taught the newbie will acquire skills and eventually learn and be good at a given game. A "noob" however is, in my definition, a player who even after being taught and advised refuses to listen to anyone because he has "l337 sKillz" and keeps on sucking at the game and bitching about it every time he/she loses, it honestly bothers me when someone tries to kick me out of games because they keep dying LEGITIMATELY no spawn killing nor snipers from across the map. Also the "noob" is and always will be a jerk who despite his underdeveloped skills will insist on saying he is better than anyone else.

A bit big for a definition but hey, you only read it because you wanted to.

Honestly i think noob is a horribly overused term that should revert to the original meaning of (new)b so that it could be used to describe new players and thats it

I've hated the term since my old runescape days when people used to spam the word like the seagulls from Finding Nemo
Ugh. I know right? The damn word, and all its connotations, are so overused. It's not even funny anymore. IMO, anyone that calls someone a newb is just being an ass. Just because someone isn't too good at a game doesn't hand them a "god-given" right to be a jackass. I feel your pain with the runscape seagulls...It's just like the word "fag". I often question whether these people know the actually meaning.

OT: In any game i've tried to help people that were new to the game. Being a jerkass to someone online is the same as bullying in real life, and should be stopped.

One example: I play Starcraft: Broodwar and play custom maps known as RPs "Role plays". They're liked RPGs, but you play on essentially a blank map and make your own story/characters. Every time when someone says they don't know the rules for RPing, everyone shouts "NEWB!" and various other vulgar connotations. I try to teach them how to play instead. Which is what EVERYONE should do instead of being a total asshole.

Also, all you people that are FFFing about newbs (The kind that don't know how to play) think about this: At some point in your gaming life, you were ALSO a newb. Think about that.

Ah yes, the discussion that has been had on this word. I'd like to say to me, even though I don't personally use this word, a noob is someone has no knowledge/very little knowledge of the game and its content.

Ah, I wasn't aware of the fact that there are two words

There's nothing wrong with a newb. Annoying noobs are unacceptable, however. I don't care if you just got the game or aren't very good, if you mic spam and are unhelpful to the team then I can't stand you. Simple as that.

That being said, a newb is someone who's new, a noob is someone who is unhelpful.

i tend to go with the pure pwnage view, a noob is just someone who has no talent for games, you can train a noob, but he'll just be a trained noob, and never compared to a true pro.
I dont think being a jackass makes you a noob, some of the best players tend to be jackasses, unfortunately.
For example, a pro will kick your ass with a perfectly executed SCV rush, and then go to great lengths to tell you, and everybody else, how awesome he is. A noob will 'try' to zergling rush you, forget about his own base, and rush the wrong location, then he will call you a hacker when you kick his ass into next week.

I think of them as people who suck at a game. Even thought there just plane clueless I try to get them to be good at games, after all sometimes I need a challenge in a game.

This sums it up:

Newb - New player. Merely uninformed. Wishes to learn, and will appreciate all the pointers you give them.
Noob - Experienced/inexperienced player, who lacks skill, and proclaims they have it.
Wishes to stay uninformed, so they can retain "1337ness." Noobs are more likely to exhibit "Douche-baggy" behavior.

i always thought newbs or newbies were the players who were new and unfamiliar with the game and noobs were the people who are familiar with the game but at the same time are also very bad while pronouncing their awesomeness and then whining whenever some one brings their feeble minds back into reality.

I don't really care about noobs, as long as they aren't jerks who have yet to realise that politeness applies to people online as well.
