I believe they are all these things, but it depends on who has them. If someone who hates me has a gun, that's dangerous. If I have a gun, that's safety. If I have many guns, that's power. If I have many guns and can sell them, that's wealth.

...I think this poll sums up the geopolitical logic behind armed forces and international surplus arms sales.

How many gun fights do you people plan on getting in... and wherever you live, remind me not to! I've yet to find a need for a gun that can't be met by another means.

Guns are for the psychologically underdeveloped members of our society; if you can't talk and reason out your problems with someone like a civilized person, shoot 'em dead. We've been doing it for a few thousand years, we've just progressed from pointed sticks to hot metal.

Ironic that we've made advances in art, culture, agriculture, music and how to kill people fast.
If you could see any gun owners from up there on your high horse, you would know that guns are used for hunting, pest control, target shooting, clay pigeon shooting, law enforcement and other recreational and practical pursuits. Most people own them for these reasons. Not to shoot "civilised" people. Learn about things before you criticise them. I'm not saying you should change your attitude to guns, they are indeed dangerous and your opinion on them is for you to decide.

Just dont make absurd judgments.

That is all.

Basically, this:

Please read my reply to your last post. Guns are not just used to kill people. Being a gun owner does not automatically mean someone is a crazed maniac who opens fire at the slightest insult. There are, in fact, plenty of entirely peaceful (perhaps even pacifistic) gun owners.
Rocks can be thrown at cans - there's your target practice.

Basebals can be thrown to a catcher with a person holding a large stick standing in front of them - there's your sport.

Law enforcement can carry tazers and batons - it's actually the cops I fear most of all when it comes to carrying firearms.

As for hunting - It's become a moot point since man learned this little thing called "agriculture".

There is no civilized reason to carry or own a gun. As I said, it just causes otherwise normal people to behave in abnormal ways.

I look at guns as a tool that's used in a rong purpose in the world for example war or controling the peapole in a contry. but in other cases I like guns and i'm a triggerhappy gunnut

So safe target practice and clay shooting isn't civilized? Its not violent, it's fun, and despite what you seem to think all gun owners are not in fact, cavemen. And besides, I don't like baseball.

Fair point with regards to policing, but criminals have guns too.

Ahh you know what, fuck it.

Nothing I say to you is going to get through, and likewise nothing you say to me is going to convince me that gun owners are uncivilized people who are somehow psychologically altered by a tool.

I've argued about gun ownership on these forums countless times, but I dont think I'm going to bother any more. Its not worth the time it takes to type a response. I'll just keep on using firearms, and you can keep on fearing them.

have a nice day

They are something we will need if nuclear war breaks out and society crumbles. It pays to expect the worst.

They can be recreational when used correctly, they look badass, and they're amazing pieces of technology.
Plus, they're useful for killing raccoons that steal your horse's food.
Yeah, that too!
As well as squirrels that destroy food containers to steal the food.
I would just use a simple Air rifle for that sort of thing, but you can use a more standard type of gun.
No, you kill them before they show up again so you don't have to watch 24/7.
Air rifles have killing power I think. You just have to get the cone pointed pellets.
Not from 30 feet away.
High quality ones designed for hunting can kill a thing from well over 30 feet away, I think.

Well then I guess they need to get a handle on that anger problem, huh? Seriously, if the intent to do serious harm is there, it doesn't matter what they use. A firearm just makes it easier.
Pretty sure it matters to the people who wouldn't have been killed but merely beaten had the psychopath not had a gun...

Quoted quote fixed. Still, he needs to get a handle on that anger problem.

Well it depends on who's hands it's in - On the other hand, what good can come out of something designed to kill humans?

My dad used a gun when he was raising pigs to keep coyotes and other wildlife away from the pigs. Also, when he raised dogs (this was when I was born) he used he rifle to keep rattle snakes away from the dogs.

Civilized people can own guns, it's rather rash to say there's no reason a person should own a gun.

Anddd... Hunting is a sport now. In the South, people hunt dear not just for food, but also for the fun of the sport.

I like guns. They are fun to fire, and effective for self defense. As soon as I turn 21, I will apply for a license of concealment for handguns, and when I turn 18 I'm getting a couple different types of rifles.

In the real world, they can be dangerous.
In the video game world, they can be power.

My real answer is death/danger. I don't like to carry firearms in real life, especially if I want to be in jail...or dead.

Shooting targets isn't civilized? Sport shooting isn't civilized (the OLYMPICS aren't civilized)? Reenacting historical battles isn't civilized? Collecting guns isn't civilized? Protecting yourself from wild animals isn't civilized (not everyone lives in the suburbs)?

I've never even *held* a gun, and I know better than that.

spent brass wont burn through clothing. Iv shot 12 guage, 22, 30-30, 30-06, and yes the brass burns, but iv had it sit on my shirt sleeve until it cools and my cloths have never melted or been set on fire. I've never worked with silencers, but i see no real reason you couldnt put one on a shotgun, it would be just like a choke, the question is why, it's close quarters anyway. and ak's recoil may be high for assault rifles, but it's relatively mild compared to early sub-machine guns or single shot, large bore rifles.
It might depend on the type of powder you use. Higher flash equals hotter burn. Also depends on what kinda cloth you use. I've had a .308 round burn through the shoulder of my cotton shirt, because the guy packed in some quality powder to give it some grunt. Aside from that, the rest are semantics.

Too true. Guns dont kill people, people kill people. The only difference between a crazed gunman and a crazy driver is the impact on the news. People love to hear about crazed gunmen, coz guns are cool. Now, if a crazed driver put a vintage '67 Impala through a busy mall, it would get some fucking attention.

Just like driving, guns are something that people need to be educated upon, and taught to respect - but there will always be some asshole out there scratching his balls with his loaded 9mm, same as the drunken asshole who thinks he can still drive after an evening on the turps. Do we stop giving out drivers licenses as well?
