I've been around guns all my life. I own them, I use them in my job, and I use them for recreation sometimes. Guns are dangerous and need to be handled with great care, that being said though guns do not kill people. People kill people with whatever tool they choose.
Also, this. I've never understood how people can say guns kill people when it's a person pulling the trigger. No matter how you look at it, something has to be there to pull the trigger, it doesn't just go off on it's own, unless it's dropped with a round in the chamber.

I usually take the same stance on firearms as i do on alcohol. Teach your kids responsibly at a younger age, allow them to interact with it(a little at a time) and you won't have to worry about your kid being stupid and shooting a friend by accident or doing something else totally irresponsible. People irrationally fear guns, but don't understand them and it ends up like McCarthysim.(If you have grown up with guns and still fear guns, I'm not calling you irrational; I'm talking about the people who only know about firearms through television.

I do believe that the country of Switzerland has a very low violent crime rate compared to other European countries, and their government issues assault rifles to households...

Please, if you have a "valid reason" please state it, instead of just saying that you do. It annoys me when people don't do research on subjects, but act as if they know whats really going on.

@OP:
Guns are powerful tools that have many purposes, it is the wielder that decides how to use it. That being said, the only thing that government restrictions on guns do is keep guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens. Criminals don't care about breaking gun laws.

Unfortunately, until we get the satelite AI overlords, we won't have full gun control, and even then... well my opinion is that only police officers, sercurity officers and border officers should get it.

Last Resort for Self-Defense

I personally have the opinion that guns kill people like spoons make Rosie O'Donnell fat.
That is to say, it's the person using it that makes it dangerous

I think they should really only be used in self defence or if you are hunting.

Too much power to casually use.

I feel safe enough that I don't carry a firearm with me, but I do enjoy using them and learning about them.

I like going to ranges and firing guns, and I would like to own guns when I settle down and buy a house. Guns are a huge responsibility. You have to maintain them, keep them from children, use them appropriately, and you really shouldn't own a gun unless you understand the consequences of failing to be a responsible owner.

As for home protection, I'm old fashioned. I like a nice Louisville Slugger.

A firearm in responsible hands is no more dangerous than a can of soda. Yes there are idiots out there that think they're toys and will do stupid things with them, but there is nothing wrong with them (the guns, that is). I own a number of them and enjoy many of their aspects, but I have never once shot another person or living thing with them; the only thing I've ever fired at was a target on a shooting range.
I do carry/conceal one for self defense, because the last thing I need to do (being under 5 feet tall here) is get into a fist fight with a man of even small stature, since I'll get my ass kicked from here to Shanghai.
Say what you want to about having other options, but I really feel a lot safer having an advantage of range (and always keeping my eyes open for trouble) if the situation arises where I'll actually need it.
As another poster said, it's all dependent on who owns it and what they do with it, and how much education they've had concerning it. You can kill someone with a hammer or circular saw just as easily as with a gun, if not more easily, since hammers, at least, are relatively silent whereas most guns tend to rather loudly announce their presence and use.

They make the killing process cleaner and quicker. In a world of weapons, I think it's probably better than just swords and/or bows. We're going to have war in this world, so I think guns make things just a tad bit less messy. Well, in some cases it can cause quite a mess...

Sorry, let me reword my statement. To obtain a firearms one must have a license. One must have a valid reason to own a firearm(s), and many countries don't accept "for self defense" as a valid reason.

Also, Switzerland having a low crime rate just shows that there is not necessarily a link between gun ownership/availability of arms and crime.

They're just tools. Humanity needs tools in order to obtain some sort of goal, and no matter what goal it may be that you're attempting to get to...there's a tool for it.

Sadly, guns aren't exactly one of the more mundane tools out in the world, but they are still just that. Nothing more than tools.

The only problem with guns are the people who wield them unresponsibly. The blame should not be on guns but, the person who decided to make wrong choices with them. What difference would it make if a murderer killed a person with a gun or a knife?

They are simply a tool as there are no dangerous weapons, only dangerous people.
There, my point summed up in one sentence.
