There tends to be a culture of looking up to those with very high post counts around here. I'm not sure if those members who have 10,000+ posts are doing so because they do enjoy the extra publicity they receive or just because they enjoy using the site and it's features, and nor is it my position to judge. I will say a couple of things though;
Mostly when I look at users with very high post counts I assume (which may or may not be the case) that the majority of them spend a lot of the time in the Forum Games section, which can encourage high post counts through the very nature of the games which are presented in there.
I think that the ability to increase your post count via communication in the user groups is a odd quirk of the system, as the post doesn't offically come up in your latest posts section yet your count still increases. Personally I'd eliminate this feature, it's not like your post count increases when you send a PM for example.
It's true that a higher post count does earn you extra respect around here, a notion popularised by some of our most prolific posters such as Max the Reaper. However, it's worth keeping in mind that a high post count is not necessarily the only way to be respected by your fellow Escapists, and a lot of users (such as NewClassic) have been highly respected for the content of their posts rather than the number of them.
Of course this is merely my personal take on the matter. I'm probably biased in that once a user goes over say, an arbitary number like 2000 posts I'm more likley to pay attention to what they say, but that comes with being around here for a while and recognising a lot of the users who've spent longer on here. Really it's the content that matters most, and ridiculously high counts make me think Forum Games and/or user groups rather than actual deep content.
That's my take anyway.
