People really have seemed to forget about Portal 2. I remember when it came out, and the gaming sites blew up with it. "Perfect game" was being tossed around. Same thing happened with Deus Ex and Skyrim, except for the "perfect" thing.

I suppose its the same thing that happens with film awards. People tend to forget about the things they saw 6 months ago when theyve seen something amazing a week ago.
And there has been many great games this year, so its easy to see why some would be forgotten.

I'd nominate Portal 2 for my "Personal Game of the Year".

But I'm betting the majority vote goes with Skyrim.

I don't have a game of the year this time around. 2011 was a great year for games(new Portal, TES, Deus Ex, Zelda, etc). To pick any one would just seem dishonest of me.

EDIT: If I had to pick a surprise contender though, I'd go with Dark Souls. That game was such a blast.

I think of all the years I've looked for GotY material, 2011 is the one with the most possibilities. There's been sooo much good stuff in the last 12 months that it will be pretty exciting to see who wins what (at least for me).

Just look at some of the games that graced consoles in the past 11 months:

Batman Arkam City, Assassin's Creed Revelations, Skyrim, Gears of War 3, Deus Ex, Uncharted 3, Portal 2, Zelda Skyward Sword and Dark Souls

And that's not including some games that I found to be great fun like Rayman Origins, Resistance 3 or Saints Row 3rd.

Um, 2011 was a shit year? In a year where a game like Batman: Arkham City is considered one of the highlights...? There really wasn't anything interesting at all this year except a few, and none of them except Skyrim were stellar.
You're joking right? 2011 has to be one of the best years to be a gamer since the 360 and then PS3 came out. Dead Space 2, BulletStorm, Dragon Age 2, Portal 2, Deus Ex: HR, Gears of War 3, Battlefield 3 and Saints Row the Third were all great games in my eyes. On top of that you still have Skyrim, Uncharted 3 and Dark Souls which I haven't really played but I sure know how popular they have been. Batman Arkam City was good but I don't think it was one of the best games that came out this year.

So.... what? Were you asleep the entire year?

I have to agree with much of the consensus, Portal 2 was pretty low down of my personal GoTY contenders. Not a bad game by any measure but the way I see it personally It really just took the good things from Portal and gave the players more of the same of that. I dont know, for me I like to give the nod to games that not only expanded on what came before it (be it genre or from specific IP) or made some unique impact on the industry such as shattering sales records, being the far away best selling game of the year, added an advent to gaming so astounding that it spawned its own subgenre, or its apparent it is an advent that is going to become massively copied in other games in the future. Sorry, I dont see portal2 doing any of these things. Its definitely a well made game, but I fail to see anything groundbreaking out of it.

Besides, GoTY is both a speculative and individual thing seeings as there is no definitive game of the year award and likely wont be one any time soon, so if you feel its GoTY, I guess it IS YOUR GoTY

These GOTY threads are a bit silly.

"I think Game X was the best"
"Fuck you fanboy, I think Game Y was best."
"I thought Game Z was best until I took an arrow in the knee... hurr hurr."
"Opinions, lol."
"Well, my opinion is objectively correct
." (See previous post.)
"This thread is silly and I'm a sarcastic and painfully self-aware prick who isn't as funny as he thinks he is."

Seriously, can't we all just give it a rest? Especially since we all know in our heart of hearts that Duke Nukem Forever was the true game of the year.

It's a toss up between Portal 2 and Skyrim.

Portal 2 had the pure undiluted fun combined with story throughout and did it (almost) flawlessly. Sometimes it was just a case of looking around the environment for a wall to put a portal on to get up to some ledge (and this could take a lot of time), but the game's humour was spot on, and Wheatley was the greatest character in gaming this year. From playing it, I never once had a glitch or anything, so it was very, very well polished before release.

Skyrim, however, is just breathtaking. Sure, it has glitches and PS3 owners pulled the short straw, but it is just such an epic game once you get past the rough edges. I haven't noticed many glitches so far (apart from the textures upon installation on 360, which has now been fixed), but even with some glitches this game is extraordinary and a great achievement for Bethesda...on Xbox and PC.

No, it wont be. I absolutely love Portal 2, with a passion, but there is an overwhelming amount of support for Skyrim on the Escapist. Skyrim will easily take out GOTY, whether it deserves it or not

I don't think Portal 2 will win, but it definitely gets my vote. When the only bad thing anybody can say about your game is that they wish there were more of it, you have knocked that thing out of the park.

And I consider short a bonus, not a liability. A hundred hour RPG is like a two month time commitment for me, a daunting prospect even for a genre I adore. Games I want to play are already released faster than I can play them. Besides, Skyrim will be a better game this next year than it today, and even better still the year after that...

Ok, I talked myself into it. Morrowind is my Game of the Year.

I still stand by Witcher 2 being game of the year. Ive played deus ex, skyrim and portal 2. Havent played skyward sword yet. I'd give second place to skyrim.

BulletStorm = WHAT? This is a bad game, by definition
"Definition"? Since when did the definition of the word "Bulletstorm" = "bad"? What are you trying to say, exactly?

Also, opinions = subjective etc. (No need to preach about that, with 1500 posts you must already know it).

Does it matter what game is Game of the Year? A game doesn't automatically turn to garbage the second it isn't the game of the year, according to which ever site. With that I would also say that getting "Game of the Year" doesn't really have the same effect as getting an Oscar for your movie, or Grammy for your song, because people who play games do not have one single awards organization that they all look towards. They all look towards separate gaming sites.

That also going into the point that these gaming sites and magazines that give out "Game of the Year" are often bias towards one genre or another, or one type of thing or another.

If you like or dislike a game then do so because of YOUR opinion, not because someone else told you to.

Though if I did have to choose, I'd hope for Skyward Sword. :3
Here here!! What this guy said :)

You don?t need a GOTY trophy to tell you a game that you like or hate is good or not you know already so bask in you glory of all knowingness

No... But you obviously are easy to please:

Dead Space 2 = forgettable, in my eyes just dreadful rehash of crap we've seen before
BulletStorm = WHAT? This is a bad game, by definition
Dragon Age 2 = You really must be joking.
Portal 2 = Fun and interesting, but too short to even qualify for any accolade.
Deus Ex: HR = It was decent. But it was hardly as good as the hype and/or metacritic score (the score DE:HR got was a good reflection on what a bad year it was before it came out)
Gears of War 3 = Crap
Battlefield 3 = Decent game, that's all
Saints Row the Third = Oh please, not even super fanboy Yahtzee saw any redeeming qualities in this piece of clutter
Uncharted 3 = PS3 exclusives don't count really, besides it was "meh" with too many contrived twists and overall bad writing
Dark Souls = Niche game, not really exciting to anyone but a few

That leaves Skyrim as the one and only truly unforgettable game from all year.
Wow. Just so you know, they're all worthy games in my opinion. Of course you are entitled to your own opinions but the reasons you just listed for most of the games right there are, quite frankly, stupid. I'd rather be 'easy to please' then a stuck up somebody who can dismiss so many lauded titles with such crappy reasons.

Not my issue if you're determined to hate so many great titles, but good luck finding games worthy of you exceptionally high standards, sir.

Arkham City should win due to being multiplatform and having mass appeal with nearly flawless execution. My personal one is Dragon Age 2.

Would gaming websites and the like even consider The Old Republic a candidate for 2011? I'd imagine most reviews on the game won't even come out until 2012. If it's a contender it may dethrone DA2 given enough time with the product. Of course I wouldn't know that personally until probably Feb or Mar 2012.

I looked forward to Skyrim for EONS and now I have it, I'm having a great amount of fun. But. For the amount of just pure enjoyment I got out of Portal 2, just for sheer enjoyment of a game, I hope it wins. My only niggle is replayability, but I had such a good time with it that it doesn't bother me too much.

Dark Souls is my GOTY, Portal 2 is good, but doesn't have the replay...
