I'd just keep a portal outside my work and a portal outside my house. Lets say blue at work and orange at home. In the morning after I'm done all my getting ready I just shoot the orange into my wall then I'm suddenly at work. Then I go in and shoot the blue at a wall there.
When I'm done work i walk outside, shoot a blue to the wall - bam I'm in my house. Open my window and shoot an orange at the ground, done.
This way no one can get in our out of the office OR my home but I can still use it to travel.
They can get BESIDE them but they can't get into them.

Seriously, Valve has to create a full game in which the only thing you use is a combined version of the Portal gun AND the Gravity gun. I'd be a bundle of fun to be resourceful, and outwit opponents. It CAN work since you actually pick up objects using the Portal gun so the concept is actually closer than we'd think. I hope they would consider this.

Gravity gun hands down. Comparing them is like comparing the games they come from. No contest.
Portal Gun: Has a heck of a lot of charm and originality, plus some occasional humour (though nowhere near as much as people like to say), but when all is said and done, its all over before you know it.
Gravity Gun: Exciting and always useful, and it has practically usurped the crowbar as the prime weapon of the game. Its a star, and it sticks by you for the long hours of playing through the game and its episodes. Also not forgetting the fact that it KILLS people, and when its supercharged it kills A LOT!

Portal gun easy. I could smoke without having to go outside in the cold or annoying my room mates. Or never have to use the ladder of death at work again (it really is a death trap. It's in a space of about 1 metre across so you can't open it out and it leans against the flimsiest shelves. Plus half the stuff you need the ladder to reach you have to be on almost the top rung to get at). Or use the stairs, or worry if I've locked my keys inside. I could just shoot a portal through my window.
Portals could only improve my life. Though I'd not be complaining if I HAD to have a gravity gun. I could sure think of some pretty nifty uses for that too. It's just the portal gun appeals to my overwhelming laziness.

The Gravity Gun was cool for a while, cut now because of it most games have SOME kind of gravity manipulation added to it, so the gravity gun is no longer unique.
But the Portal gun.... only one game has a portal gun and that's Portal. Unique and inventive.
