So took advantage of the free Portal offer. Never got around to playing it until now; I know.... Great game and concept.

Was making great progress with escaping from level 19 after an hour. But then I had to stop playing the game. For the first time in nearly 30 years of playing games, of all sorts, I had to stop for fear of barfing. Maybe I am getting old, but I have never felt so nauseous playing a game. I finished the game soon afterwards, but had to take a few breaks whenever the nausea got too much. Nothing has ever done this to me before, from FPS like Wolfenstein, Doom etc to modern ones....

And yes the game was not running slowly or anything with 60 fps going throughout. This is the normal gaming rig I use and have never felt like this before, even with games using 3D glasses.

Anyone else had their stomach turned, by the mad orientation changes in this game? Will have to decide if my stomach can take the second one....

Edit: I think it's due to me coming down with something as, I now have a runny nose and a cough... Will give the game another go when I am feeling better.

Edit2: Updated title to open it up to any games people have had issues with. Mirrors edge seems to be coming up a lot and other source game due to their default very low FOV....

Nope. I was fine throughout.

Though I tend not to have visceral reactions to anything...

Except that time we cut up an eyeball in biology.

I've had similar thing with HL2, seems like the source engine might be the common cause? :S

Not so much with Portal but I used to get intense motion sickness with the old fps games; Doom 2 etc. I think I have got used to it over the years.

I know how you feel lol.

I got nowhere close to barfing but a few sections of the game did start to give me a nauseous feeling.

And never had issues with those either. It really started to be noticeable in sections where you fall through multiple portals and need to get your orientation quickly to shoot out another portal.

Maybe I am in some other way under the weather today....

This kind of thing isnt actualy all that uncommon and is most prevelent in first person games, its often caused by Field Of View being too low i seem to remember seeing a video on youtube a long time ago where the person commentating complained they couldnt play call of duty due to the FOV making them nauseous.

*Edit* I just googled "fov induced nausea" and it brought up alot of results if your courious.

Isn't this the same problem Hideo Kojima compains of?

As for me, no I never got sick from playing any videogame... In fact I enjoy it more when my orientations and what not get messed up, but I can see how it might cause trouble.

The game is known to cause vertigo since you're bouncing around so much in a first person view. The same thing happened to my dad when he merely WATCHED me play through the 2nd game. I actually get mild vertigo from it, but some people have more extreme cases. That's what think your problem was.

Unfortunately, I don't know a cure for that. Maybe motion sickness meds?

I feel a bit nauseous playing Portal too, especially when jumping from up high into a portal on a ground, launching you higher into the air. Then again, I have a bit of an issue with heights.

I could see why, but it didn't effect me.

TRIVIA
Originally there was going to be sticky gel, enabling you to cling to walls, but they took it out as test players became too nauseated.

The same thing kind of used to happen to me with minecraft.
Say if I'd dug a mineshaft going from the surface down really far, when in the tunnel I would not which way I was going and would lose perspective, not being able to tell if I'm jumping up a block, or down a block.

It was really weird. But it doesn't really happen anymore since I got glasses. Ha!

I had this same issue with Portal 2. Even my family was telling me that it was making them nauseous.

Nope. Got a bit dizzy playing Mirror's Edge, but that's the worst I've gotten when playing a game.

Interesting, but since I have spent the last 20 years playing FPS's without ever having any sensation like this I don't think it is to do with the FOV in my case. But good advise on google for others in increasing the FOV.

That sounds more like it. It did seem like the same sensation I have experienced after going on a very high rotational fun park rides a few times in a row. I think meds, are taking it a bit far. Will just have to take more breaks between playing sessions. Probably my own fault for seeing if I could finished the game in less time than it took to download and in one sitting....

The only game that made me feel like that was Killzone 2. It was so bad I traded it in. I play all kinds of games without that happening, it was only KZ2.

Im not that surprised that someone felt sick playing the game, to be honest. I felt fine during all of Portal, though.

Actually, didnt they cut a part from Portal 2 because it made people nauseous? A third gel that made it possible to walk on walls? And apparently virtual walking on walls upside down makes people sick?

(The original version of that gel, and the two others are playable in TAG: The Power of Paint)
