The Ball Features... (with portal commentary)

Innovative gameplay(Which Portal had...)
- First person singleplayer game(Portal and a ton others)
- A six hour adventure(Portal did NOT have that long)
- A puzzle and action game(Portal was a puzzle game... minus action)
- Crushing monsters with lots of gore(Portal doesn't have any enemies really)
- Value priced(both are $20 so portal is here too)
- An indie PC game(Portal = nope... heh heh)

I loved portal for the strange puzzles and the funny dialogue. Obviously that is my favourite puzzle game. I have never heard of the ball but I guess I can go check it out.

The Ball huh? So basically, the premise is that you use your giant ball to defeat enemies, solve puzzles, and explore a huge world. If you lose your ball, you have to run away like a coward.

Not only is this REALLY Freudian, it sounds incredibly annoying. Especially if they fuck up the rolling physics, or put in a lot of places where it's really easy to lose your ball or get it stuck.

Anyway, Portal was certainly a very good game, but it wasn't my favorite of all time and I didn't agree with Yahtzee that it's the best game ever. The only reason he feels that way is because he really likes innovative gameplay and unique settings and set-pieces, which Portal has in abundance.

So yeah, Portal is not the best game ever. Not since Minecraft was released, anyway.

Being that I can remember when MineCraft was called "Legos + Imagination" I can't believe/understand why people like it... yes I have it (someone bought it for me) and once I made a giant 8-bit Simon Belmont I got bored... once my girlfriend made a giant 8-bit Mario she got bored...

I'd say that SC2 is the best game EVAR but considering that I don't play it that much (I feel like something's missing... like 2/3's missing *hint* *hint*) I won't say it

I've mainly been playing games from 1995 and 2006 and they ROCK

My opinion of Portal? I love it, and will enjoy Portal 2 unless they majorly screw something up.

My favorite puzzle game? I'm... not a puzzle kind of guy. Picross? Crossword puzzles?

The Ball looks like a HL2 physics puzzle made into a (relatively) full-length game. Only not as good. I'll give it a look when it comes out, but meh.

Portal was... well... it was different but it did get old. And I hate the damn song more for the overplayed and way over-hyped nature (it really isn't that great of a song...). The game is decent, but repetetive in nature. Make portals to find way out of room, don't kill yourself. Pretty straightforward and lacking depth. Yes I know the puzzles weren't all the same but it was in the end the same thing over and over again. The very definition of insanity. Solve puzzle, exit room. Rinse-repeat. Good storytelling though.

Favorite "puzzle" game? Myst. I hated the game but I admit, the puzzles at the time were good, I just wasn't in the frame of mind to finish it.

The Ball looks interesting.

I thought Portal was pretty darn good, Tetris is still a god among puzzle games, and there's room enough in the world for Portal and The Ball to peacefully coexist. But on a related note, whenever someone quotes Portal in no real context, it inches away from Best Game Ever. Besides, Portal 2 is where it's at ;)

Yes. I broke my favorite trackball in aggro-rage because I couldn't solve a puzzle in it. Also one of the better puzzle games.

I absolutely loved Portal - for me, everything about that game screams "good game design". Although the puzzles were simplistic, there was sufficient variety to keep me entertained throughout the game. Furthermore, Valve's approach of telling a story through the environment has always appealed to me ever since I fell in love with Half-Life many years ago. The atmosphere of mystery and intrigue which is present throughout the game was another point in its favor, and, although it's been said many times, the dialogue was awesome, and was unlike anything I'd ever experienced prior to Portal. The fact that the game connected vaguely with the Half-Life 2 universe made it all the sweeter.

What I find is the most common complaint about "Portal" is how the jokes and memes spawned by the game have become so painfully overused - first of all, this is a stupid complaint and is by no means a justifiable reason for hating the game itself (since it isn't the game's fault), and second, perhaps it's because this is the only gaming website I go to, or because my friends didn't parade around declaring "the cake is a lie" every 5 minutes following the game's release, but this has NEVER been an issue for me. I rarely EVER see Portal mentioned outside of this website, and the only time I hear "Still Alive" is when I take it upon myself to go and listen to the song because I want to.

I really don't play all that many puzzle games, but I'd probably select either Portal or Tetris as being my favourite.

"The Ball" looks pretty awesome - definitely a game I'd be interested in playing. Plus, I have to say it - is it just me, or does the "o" in "Teotl studios" totally remind everybody of Portal :S

"portal is great and if you don't think so, you must be stupid!" one of my favorite videos.

portal is one of my favorite games. you think its boring? try it in less than half an hour.

"ball" looks very interesting, but the domain from the trailer (theballgame.com) doens't exist.

All I see is gratuitous posting in one's own thread. Portal was enjoyable. I was late to the party, though.

Portal, game play wise, is fairly standard, portal gun was a very cool feature. Where Portal excelled was in its story. A brilliant piece of work, with good evolution, character development and the relationship between Glados and Chell is top notch. Even the Ratman is a well thought out character and all you see of him is messages scrawled on the walls. Its just sad that an important plot point involving the cake, the hinted at reward for all your troubles and on of the main psychological problems for the Ratman, was turned into a stale internet mime completely axing all of the importance held in it.

As for my favorite puzzle game, Myst, just managed to beat it recently after playing it for over 8 years. Was a fun trip though.

As for The Ball, meh.

Looks kinda one-trick, tbh. Puzzle solving of the sort I've already seen in HL2 and Portal, just with one big gimmick and poorly presented in such a way that it looks uninspired :/ I mean, compare the two puzzle sequences in that vid with the Portal 2 coop trailer
Which sells itself better? Which do you think I'm more excited for? :p

Isn't The Ball an Unreal Tournament 3 mod? Are they making it into it's own game now? Sweeet.

1: I liked Portal because it was subtle. It didn't beat your brains out with narrative. It presented you with a game of connect the dots, and let you solve it at your own pace. I also liked the humor, and no I'm not talking about "Teh CAKE is ah LIIEE!!1!" I'm talking about GLADoS's dialogue: "What's your point anyway, survival? Well then, the last thing you want to do is hurt me. I have your brain scanned and permanently backed up in case something terrible happens to you. Don't believe me? Here, I'll put you on: Haloooo! That's you! That's how dumb you sound! You're not smart! You're not a scientist! You're not a doctor! You're not even a full time employee... where did your life go so wrong?" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89KyfTDgPyc&NR=1] Dialogue like that is what earns Portal it's spot on my favorite games list. It was also nice to see a game use portals and momentum in a unique way. However I preferred the story over the game play, even though I found it fun.

2: Favorite puzzle game? Well, honestly, it's Portal. I don't play a lot of puzzle games.

3: The Ball looks awesome! [http://theball.toltecstudios.com/] Maybe that will convince me to finally make a Steam account.
