The lake is apparently possible to swim across, though deep enough to drown anyone who gets tired too soon.

Zane took a look at his gear, He shed the excess 3 clips he carried for each weapon, leaving 2 clips for each weapon. He also kept a grenade or two leaving one grenade.
"I can carry this Medkit for five miles while swimming, passing the pilot exam isn't as easy as some people think!"
