So I'm hearing rumours that Microsoft and other big time corporations are thinking of banning pre-owned games entirely. Mostly using that little code that let's the user register he game to his console only. Now I don't know about you guys but I love pre-owned games. Sifting through the pile of used games at the store and finding classics at a third the price. The only reason I can think of why Microsoft would pull this move is so they can make more money and I'm no specialist but I think they are pretty well off.
Is there something I'm missing from the picture?
I'm cool with this. It sucks, yeah, but it's not like the price won't drop anyway over time. If you want to play the game when it comes out, you should have to pay full price. The fact that so many people don't is why you're seeing all this other bullshit in games (DLC on the disk, pay for multiplayer, etc...)

No, definately not. One of the perks of owning a console is the ability to rent a game to try it out before you buy. Or purchase a pre-owned game when you know the game has been out for a long while and there is no other option but to buy a pre-owned.

No, I don't agree with that. Used games destroy the market? Ha, yeah of course. We all know how libraries have been destroying the books industry for centuries.
I don't see why movies, cars, electronics, clothes etc. are doing well despite used sales but games should be treated differently. It just makes no sense to me.

My biggest gripe with this theoretical business model is that it would make collecting rare games pretty damn more expensive than they already are, because every time that someone plays it that's a copy that NO ONE else will be able to play thereby making it even rarer with every copy that someone plays and the price would inflate to ridiculous numbers and maybe even run out of playable copies.
So overall the idea is just fucking retarded as hell and I really doubt that Microsoft would be stupid enough to do this, after all it is just a rumour.

I only have like 2 pre owned games in my collection but would still abandon the next Xbox in a heartbeat just on general principle. They wanna try to fuck with us then fine, I will take my money elsewhere.
And all these whiney fuck developers like the dude from Volition who support this shit do is just make me determined to buy their games second hand just out of spite.

...OH SCREW IT.

As a PC exclusive gamer, a hater of Gamestop and its ilk, and someone who is sick and tired of the Project Ten Dollar/Day One DLC whinging, yes.

Yes. I am perfectly OK with this. I have absolutely no issues with publishers and developers securing more money for themselves. I am perfectly cool with purchases being permanent. I am unconcerned with the aneurysms that no one is actually having about this. I am almost overjoyed that the whiniest consumer base I can think of is being actively slapped in the face.

Yes.

I am perfectly fine with this.

And if you're not, then don't buy their console. Your rage is useless, so hit them where they might actually feel it for a damn change.

...if you shop Gamestop or one of their subsidiaries. There are used game retailers who don't suck after all, such as the old woman hosting a yard sale or, the smelly hippy at a local flea market. There's a difference between being against used games and being against Gamestop and I'm against Gamestop.

That being said, Microsoft would have to endure a huge backlash if they were to implement a system that rejects used/ unregistered games on individual consoles. The only way they could get away with it would be if they released the new Xbox with the feature but didn't tell anyone about it but even then, that would be the first thing reported and the thing reported on most loudly (unless of course the new Xbox's die as often as first-run 360's did).

Honestly, I can bet you this most likely wont happen. Why? Because it has so many things wrong with it (that I bet you Microsoft has seen). Also, a source to your rumor would be nice, instead of 'ive heard that...". Just want to see some evidence to even start thinking why it would be bad.

But other than that, I rarely buy used games, especially since I HATE disk wear and tear, but the past few weeks ive started buying a couple used games (at the coercion of my local Gamestop manager. And before anyone says anything, this guy let me return a game a few weeks after the '1 week full return' deal for the full price. He has my loyalty.).
I just have to say, the only reason I now want to buy Arkham City is because I just beat Arkham asylum USED.

So no, honestly not because im such a poor college student (which I am), but because I dont have the income to think every new game from a developer will be great at $60, so testing the waters with some old used games makes me happy.

Yes, I'm cool with that. I want to support the developers of games, not the retailers.

I haven't bought a preowned game in years by the way. I do buy most of my games from Steam though, to be fair.

Honestly, I think it would be a pretty stupid move for Microsoft to ban used games when there is another effective way to stop them, without the negative PR. Get a really solid direct download service like Steam, put all your games on there. Most people will buy from there for convenience alone, and there will be no pre owned games to buy. Sell them cheaper than retailers too, as you no longer have to pay them anything and no disc/case production.

I'm not a big fan of this because it will mean that most people will make less purchases and take less risks with purchasing unfamiliar or obscure titles. Also, for those who wish to purchase older, used games that are no longer available in stores, they will be out of luck, and will be at the mercy of the publishers (i.e. they will need to hope for a downloadable purchase or an HD remake of the game(s)).

I would just purchase less titles or wait until they become less expensive.

Also, if you have a household with two of the same consoles, one will be out of luck and you would need to purchase a new game for that console rather than simply sharing the same game.

And I am also a PC gamer. I just laugh at all you nonsense prophecies about the future of consoles when games start to be bound to an account or such.
Oh right, I forgot how great EA and Activision treat their customers.

How dare we?

It's money-grubbing greed, and that's all there is to it. You realize this would render every game useless to ANYONE else?

People who're PC gamers may be fine with it, but that doesn't work for those of us who don't have the money to build a gaming rig. I'm lucky if I can get Metro 2033 running on five FPS when something more imposing than a blank wall moves across my crosshairs.

I'm not going to go out and spend $60 on a game if I cannot first evaluate and decide whether it is worth my money. No more bargain bin hunting, no more trade-ins.

This will effectively kill new developers, which I'm sure is exactly what the big companies are hoping for; crush any new competition that arises to dominate the market. Who will want to go spend sixty greenbacks on a new developer's game when GENERICA SHOOTER 5: ARMED ASSAULT just came out?

I find it immoral and disgusting that this could even be considered. Where are our rights as consumers? "Give us ALL your moniez or go fuck yourselves" is all I'm reading.

Without reading about 15 walls of text: no I'm not cool with it. It doesn't impact me personally too much but it'll fuck with retail and it'll probably fuck with gaming in general.

Beyond that, it's fucking immoral in my mind.

Banning preowned games will esentially kill of any classic games i nthe long run. Maybe the best selling ones will get rereleased, but many others will simply dissapear with time.

And which store would that be? I buy most my games on Amazon, PC included, and a lot of them i buy used. I often buy new releases of friends. Hell, a while ago now, I swapped my copy of ODST for Borderlands. I don't see how this is supporting a "chain of stores which are run by assholes, abuse their customers, employees and the one industry relying on first hand sales through them".

I'm going to guess you mean Gamestop, and i've never even seen one, let alone bought anything from them. Oh, America...
