I quote here from the article: "Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the Norwegian committee said in a statement.

Also: "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

Sounds to me that the world thinks much more highly of Obama than the country itself. That second statement was a big one. If you ask me it pretty much says, "To lead the world he'll have to do what's best for the world at large. NOT what would be the best for the USA at times." If he can actually pull through with that then I would call it reason enough. But again like everyone else is saying he hasn't actually DONE much of it yet. I'm among the people with high hopes and continues supporting him but reward him for what he does, not for what he plans to do.

US President Barack Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, selected from a field of 205 nominees.

Now, forgive my ignorance and I'm hoping not to get flamed for this. But what for?

I don't know nearly enough of his political or diplomatic history to comment and I know they don't give out Nobel Prizes for collecting enough cereal box tops.

*facepalm*

Have Americans gotten stupid or something? I mean really. OBAMA HAS DONE NOTHING TO SAVE THIS COUNTRY and I can't believe you all believe the lies his PR department makes up.

Heck, why not give the Nobel Peace Prize to President W. Bush for having Saddam Hussein, a murderer, out of power and tried for his crimes? That sounds like something it should be awarded for, but no people think he is a war criminal despite that. I guess then we should also give a Nobel to Harry S Truman for dropping the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and to our boys in WWII who stopped Germany and saved the Jews huh? No, more war crimes you say?

Meanwhile our "great president" now can't even bail out a "Cash for Clunkers" program, many companies are firing their workers and some even going out business, and everyone is so strapped for money and we want to give him a Nobel Peace prize for just looking pretty.

I can't even get a job, and we want to give this guy a Nobel...

I am sorry people, but planning to do something is NOT the same as doing it.

If you think that should be the case then I should get the Nobel Peace prize for PLANNING to find a cure for cancer...whether I succeed or not.

This is all a joke...a one big unbelievable joke now and the whole world is laughing at us. Even more so then we did with President Bush. At least Bush had the balls to punch those who tried to laugh at us and say "Who's laughing now?"

And to those who still think Obama is the greatest president we ever had...you are lying to yourselves. Funny how all my friends who did vote for Obama all regret now for voting for him. Ironic.

To quote "Blazing Saddles"

"What the hell is that shit?"
He got it for NOT being George Bush Jr. Yes, Bush was that bad; people are getting awards for just not being him.

@James Cassidy
you want to blame some1 for your unemployment & the wrecked economy, why dont you try blaming Bush's economic policy & deregulation madness. It's what removed all the checks & balances that let the country reach it's current state.

He himself said he didn't deserve it, but he took it anyway.

It could have been a test to check his honesty.
Or a case of bribery... Hmm...

I shall bring this thread back to life!

Sorry I was late to the party, but I've been busy.
It seems like a few people don't think he deserved it, and I am one of those people.

The most plausable arguement FOR him getting the peace prize is the fact that he's trying to get rid of or at least lower the amount of nuclear weapons we have.
But...
I could say how I would love to end world hunger by buying everyone in the world a cheeseburger off the dollar menu, but should I be awarded a prize for that?
(OK, kind of weak example, but I giggled.)

I think you should win the Nobel Peace Prize for actually DOING something. Obama doesn't deserve the award until he strives to make the world a better place by actively DOING something to help the world.

I could even be a douchebag and talk about how gettin rid of nukes would be a stupid idea, because not every country would get rid of them and then we'd be fucked, but I don't want to start a war. <- so scratch what I just said.

They said it was for his "soft power" over the U.S. I have no idea what it means, and neither does anybody else. He hasn't done anything! The award was just given to him because the Nobel Peace Prize is controlled by Uber-Liberals. Even Obama doesn't really think he deserves the award!

I truly can't fathom why he really got it.

I just say it's way too early. I mean, yeah, he MIGHT do something in the future to deserve it, but, then again, maybe I will, too.

And, if they're giving it to him for being the first black President, he doesn't even deserve it for being that. You know who deserves the prize for that? EVERYONE WHO VOTED FOR HIM. He did nothing without the people's support.
