What I don't get is how you didn't just pound the doubters into the ground with your vast knowledge of gaming. Surely that'd get them on your side. Well, if they play the same games as you, anyway.

As for the question you ask, it's the same reason geeks/nerds are stereotyped as unattractive. There's very little logic or reason it exists, but hey, that's no different than literally every single stereotype ever.

Also, I see two people in this thread spelling wane as wain. This huts me immensely, being a grammar nazi and all.

Yeah, that's a total lie I mean I'm super pretty and most of my friends that also play games are also at least half as pretty as me.

I have a picture of myself in my profile, you can judge for yourself.

I wouldnt claim to be a model but not exactly what some people think of when they hear "Gamer".

It's a stereotype of inactive positions. It's for the same reason bookworms are thought to be not pretty. (Anyone can do it, requires no major physical activity, that chizzle.)

Sterotypes. Gamers are stereotyped as pudgy white guys who dwell in basements. All the female, non-white gamers already prove that wrong.

Also, sociopaths would be bothered by this. In fact nothing would bother a sociopath... ever.

that might be true but i'd suggest that its not simple cause and effect.

imo people who are ill and especially the mentally ill and thus socially excluded are over represented in on-line gaming and "on the internet" as a whole BUT to my mind that's not because gaming or "the internet" causes these things but rather because they are what the internet specifically offers to those who are ill and imo those things are of enormous value
The article doesn't attempt argue causality. And I misspoke somewhat. Only male gamers were significantly fatter than average. Female gamers did score lower on health status. I think it's worth looking into. Gaming can be a fairly pricey hobby, and economic status is generally correlated with lower BMI in the U.S.

It's also worth noting that 45% of respondents reported playing video games. So it's likely this includes people with a wide range of video game habits. Better source.[footnote]http://www.ajpmonline.org/article/S0749-3797%2809%2900458-9/abstract[/footnote]

Whoa! whoa! I am the most handsome man in the Solar System (not counting Jupiter respectively) I love video games. I workout like a mofo (seriously I do) and I climb mountains. And when I'm not doing all that workout stuff guess what I'm doing . . . that's right, stealing kittens! and when I'm not doing that, I'm playing me some video games. Waiting very much so for the Last Guardian.

Good point, what is 'with' that idea?!

I'm kidding. It's a pointless point. Very few people on here hold such delusions because most people play videogames, and for most people are not ugly. Only insular and oblivious people outside of this forum believe that as well. The stereotype is used against gamers by idiots, and I don't see any reason to give it credence.

I go to Uni during the day, I go to the gym most days afterwards, I eat alright and game all night. I'm not going to make a judgment on my looks, but I'm not unhealthy or fat. I suspect similar is true of many other gamers, who are otherwise normal people.

I can't speak for most gamers, but I for one am tragically handsome!

You give me cause to doubt.
Gamers can't look good, it's impossible.
All those empty calories, the 6+ hours of sitting on your duff a day, surely you jest.
Mate, your the epitome of good looking in this culture at this point in time. Pretty sure folks would say that "everybody is attractive in their own way," but thats crap. There are hordes of Cheeto swollen CHUDs but that goes for genre of entertainment. Its just more prevalent with gamers/nerds/what-have-you because that's the traditional stereotype associated with this culture. We lost the dame to Biff, the quarterback, because we were either to skinny/fat and thus not a real men.Give it ten years and nerds will be looked upon as alabaster hunks of solid muscle.

I wouldn't know. I can see someone has presented a statistic which indicates gamers are in general fatter and more sloppy with hygiene so it would be ignorant to ignore that because of my own personal opinions or experiences.

I guess there could be some merit to the stereotype, but I wouldn't know. I know I'm not attractive, but I am quite fit and got good personal hygiene, but I am one person not all gamers. You are all denying this stereotype based on limited facts.

OH MY GOD i CAN POST I'M FREE...FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
*ahem*

I think the thing here is, its not just being "ugly" most people arent *that* bad on a base level

however how you dress/groom/present yourself can go quite a long way, and I guess the sterotype with nerds in they dont put that much effort into their apearance...or have little fashion sense (more the former) which in a way makes sense (certaintly in my case)

Um, probably because video games are considered a "nerdy" past-time, and those who enjoy such things are stereotyped as being unattractive? That might have something to do with it...

Most nerds have poor self-esteem. Having poor self-esteem generally lends to lack of self-presentation, as well as overall poor self-value. That is very unattractive.

Most nerds have poor self-esteem because people think nerds are unattractive. So nerds are unattractive because people tell them nerds are unattractive.

The point I'm making here, I suppose, is that it really is just societal perception at play. A person who plays videogames will be as stereotypically attractive or ugly whether they play videogames or not. Perhaps more unattractive people adopt videogames as a kind of escapism, but generally speaking, general level of attractiveness can't be determined on the fact that people play videogames. Most of my friends are gamers and I know as many that look like Christian Bale as look like Danny Devito. I think the statistic is one out of every three people aren't "TV pretty".

Well I don't have one friend that's really much overweight and all my friends play videogames. I don't think I have one guyfriend who doesn't enjoy playing videogames of some sort and most girls I know like at least some sort of games.
And some of us are in pretty good shape too, I mean most pro footballers (I'm European) have said that they enjoy playing Fifa for example, so there we got a bunch of fit gamers...

Are there fat, unactractive nerds? Sure.
Are all nerds ugly? Definitely not, check out some of the pictures from the Expo.

I won't comment on my own level of attractiveness, but my local nerd troop is at least average, I'm sure...

Well, pretty people tend to have better social lives. If I was a super hunk all my life, I'd probably have a much higher self esteem and I'd be too busy having friends to play video games.
Although, like many have said before, video games are seeping into our culture very rapidly and more and more people are playing them.

I keep being told I really should find a partner and that it's an insult to people without my looks that I'm not using them.

And I don't even consider myself better than "decent-looking".
