Just once i would like to see someone glad that art and games and music are going to continue to get money, because their theivery won't be tolerated. Instead of everyone being upset that it will now be enforcibly illegal to do something that was illegal to begin with. that's a nice dream.

I like games, I like games enough to pay for them. ditto music. I'll admit the system isn't perfect yet, but what we're working towards, ie the continuation of the music and games industries, i'm willing to work for it

You haven't been following the election very closely, have you? The Conservatives are pretty much guaranteed a minority government and a majority is a very real prospect.
Fuck that noise? When is the US elections? If Iraq Osama gets the presidency I'm so moving my ass to California. I've had enough of these fuckwit Conservatives.

Better yet, Japan... No. Eating would be a problem for me there. Same reason I couldn't do most places in the world.
Support proportional representation.

I agree, though. How frustrated are the majority of Canadians going to be when Obama is president and Harper is Prime Minister?

Okay, now please explain what aspect of the previous system of American IP law somehow made it difficult for "art and games and music" to "get money." Go on.

Well put.

jim, while it may seem that this whining about the legislation is just us pirates wanting to keep on plundering pirating, it's more to do with harsh penalties that only serve the **AAs. This legislation doesn't do any extra to protect IP, but just allows the organisations to get the government to do their job for them, and generally impose penalties that aren't suited for the crime.

As you can tell, I'm not too happy with this legislation. Hopefully Rudd ignores any requests, lest my music collection is found...

OH NOEZ!! THEYS IS GONNA TAKE MY COMPY!!

*ahem*

Sorry about that, but I've pirated a thing or two, or three, or seventy... Anyway, I don't want them to take away my Pc, Laptop, External Harddrive, PSP and so forth. I like those things. I paid for those. I mean what's 600+ dollars worth of PSP games between friends.

Truthfully I haven't actually pirated a game that I ever kept. So far all the games I've gotten for PSP have been total crap.
The "since it sucked I don't feal guilty for stealing it" defence. Wonder how well that would work at McDonald's.

I personally am all for a way to stop piracy through online and hardware meens, since online and hardware are what created the mess that is piracy. But the government tried getting tougher with "the drug war" and I think we all know how that turned out. II wouldn't get too mad about this if I were you.... it is like throwing a pebble at an elephant, sure you piss off the elephant.... but after the elephant sits on you a few times you realise how stupid that was.

If DRM worked properly, I'd have no problem with this. You should be able to transfer DRM enabled files to any device you want. You OWN the file for fucks sake. Its just as ridiculous as only being able to play a CD on ONE CD player.

Provided you don't impede on my using or selling of my equipment/possesions your free to do whatever you damnwell please with them, and I have no issue with it.
Prehaps 'piracy' would is better described as plagiarism. Your stealing ideas and concept, not physical possessions, and as I said as long as you don't impede my ability to sell or make use of my work, your free to do what you want with it (this obviously means not distributing or marketing my work as your own).
It is silly to consider plagiarism as theft. It is different and has its own name.
"Plagiarism is the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work."

Well, sucks for the US but has no bearing on my Canadian ass.
Part of the bill asks for special copyright ambassadors to lobby other countries to follow suit. Given how Canada already came pretty close to getting a ridiculous **AA-authored copyright law, I think you should be at least a little bit wary.

Crap.

Australia has a tendency to imitate America, especially governments.
But how does this make it different from other copyright laws? I mean, it's got to be one of those ones that are enforced, but people don't care anyway.

You still have choices - deal with the DRM, steal the work product and hope you don't get caught, or do without it.
Or the third choice. Companies stop bitching about changing technology and adapt.
It's like banning factories because they took your carpentry job.

To those defending stealing as long as you have no intention of selling the stolen property, would it be okay if I steal your car and take it for a joy ride as long as I bring it back?
False analogy.
I bought that car fair and square. You said "I want 300 for this car" and I said "Here's 300" and you said "Here's your car". Then I let my friends joyride in my car, and you sue my friends because you didn't give express permission for me to let people ride in my car.

It's really amazing how that propaganda campaign they utilized totally fucked up people's understanding of IP. Even when they laugh at it, it got them thinking as was intended.

Actually it's rich con-men taking from not-so-rich thieves.

But, again, it will be those people who have to re-buy their copyright because the manufacturer refuses to replace it who will suffer, any serious pirate can block their IP address with ease.

And let's not forget that the Anti-Terror laws in the UK have been already used to stop the 'Terrorism' from Iceland.

Oh and any ISP that upholds the DPA in Britain is now subject to "Conspiracy to commit perjury"."

I'm not going to pretend to know about American law, I don't live there and I don't have time to study it. What I meant by that statement is these laws are supposed to cut down on copyright infringment, which I am all for. More money that goes into music and games, the happier I am.

I disagree, bad games and movies don't deserve money, you're a fool for paying for garbage.
No, I'm a consumer. I take that chance when I buy something. but I listen to the radio, i read and watch reviews, I play games with freinds, and then I make up my mind. All of these are legal ways to test if something is good.

no, its like banning factories that break well established laws to produce their product, and claiming that they aren't hurting anyone

You're both wrong on this one. It's like if you take your driving test, then get caught speeding. you own a copy of the cd, not the cd itself. the music on there belongs to the artist and the record company. they have the right to decide what's done with it

If I saw some reasonable legislation on the table, maybe I'd accept it.

Shit like this, though? Shit like this just encourages the entertainment industry to continue extending their claims far past what copyright was meant to allow. They keep pushing for more Mickey-Mouse legislation (literally) and then they use gobs and gobs of money to continually misrepresent the existing legal structure in order to assert further "rights" they do not -- and should not -- have.

There's nothing to be happy about here. Not if you're a consumer, or a creator, or even a big IP owner who has a lick of common sense.
