I drank some last night and I wasn't a good experience. I got tired and fell asleep early. How can anyone fucking party, socialize, and drink at the same time???

I've got no problem with alcohol. I don't drink often, maybe a few times a month, and I normally know when to stop. Whiskey on the rocks is my personal favorite.

I've often wondered why one chooses to smoke or drink personally. I made the choice not to early on because I've never felt the need to slowly poison myself to death(I know it seems harsh to put it that way but that's how I've always viewed it). Alcohol only causes health problems so why do it?
I do drink at times, but with the Alcohol only causes health problems, it's actually been proven that at least a cup a day of red wine is actually very healthy for a person. so no, alcohol does not only cause health problems.
A single glass of red wine might just be very healthy, however that is a very small portion of the entire spectrum of alcohol. I was addressing the entire spectrum as a whole and am not up for splitting hairs.
Ehm, I'm not going to split hairs either, but alcohol is like everything else we ingest: best in moderation. Hell, people have died from drinking too much water. Moderate and sensible (appropriate to the individual) consumption has little, if any, effect on one's health.

OT: I drink... but I seek to enjoy the taste of what I drink. This is why I regard vodka to be the worst alcoholic drink in existence (not for reasons of taste, but for reasons of lack of taste just to clarify).

Thus, I enjoy a glass of red/white with an evening meal (as appropriate), and a glass of brandy on ice the remainder of the time. The occasional scotch doesn't go amiss. And if the occasion calls for it, I will have pints, even if I'm not the biggest fan of them.

I'm like an old fogey when with a few of my friends when we pull up to a pub at nine o'clock in the morning. We drink all day, but end up only having about six pints each in ten hours while watching cricket.

Just wondering. Do you drink alcohol, or not? If you don't, why not? If you do, is it a casual drink or do you get drunk? Do you only drink socially? Funny drunken stories please as well. What do you drink? When did you start, and for the youngsters like me are you of legal age to yet?
I'm just curious because as a teenager (16) alcohol, while not being a MASSIVE DEAL is quite a big thing. I like parties with alcohol, and I like having people to acquire it through (am I allowed to talk about illegal things on here?). I will admit, even though I know some Escapist members consider it and uncouth and unclassy activity, I like to get drunk with my friends. However, while I see the appeal of having a beer on my own, I do not feel the need to get drunk alone. I drink vooodka, cheapy Tesco value vodka with coke. And, even though I'm not a regular smoker, I like smoking when drinking (unless I'm so wasted I burn myself or something).
ANYHOO, your thoughts please.
I'm going to quote, then answer each point. ('cause I'm nice like that!)

Yes, I do drink alcohol. I have mixed reasons, for instance, I like beer as a drink. I also like incredibly raw stuff in the same way people go out of their way to eat inexplicably sour stuff and be all like XD!!!!!!! THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!

I don't just drink to get drunk, unless that's the thing with a group of friends (I'm 16, too), but I tend to have good self control. I've recently gotten into the idea of actual parties, not just drinking with a couple of mates at a time, or drinking socially on family occasions. Anyway, your favorite part:

So me and some friends went camping. And by camping, I mean trespassing. (I was vaguely aware that was the probability.) So it was quickly darkening, so we put up the tents and whatnot. I had brought a powerade bottle full of slough gin that had fermented for a few years, and was the only one that could handle more than the odd swig, and ended up having damn near the whole thing. I also had some rum and vodka. So about two thirds into my bottle of gin, I was given a can of boddington's.

I was desensitized by the rawness of the gin, and downed the whole can (it was the first time I'd had bitter, too) at this point, I was persuaded to go and help steal a boat. Four of us went, me and another guy mostly went to watch from across the river, waiting for the inevitable cock up. It didn't happen and the rowing boat made it safely to our campsite (but by that point, everyone else had cooked and eaten all the food.) So about twenty minutes later, we saw torch beams flashing over the hilltop. (Our chain of thought: Police station closes at ten, it's about 2 in the morning. We're trespassing. These are probably farmers, probably with shotguns. They will probably shoot at least one of us (this is Yorkshire, after all) LEG IT) In about thirty seconds, the torch beams would reach our campsite, and the fire was already a beacon.

We hared off into the darkness. By unspoken consent, we split into groups of three, or four. The group I was in (including the guy who I'd sat with to watch the boat get brought across the river) ran down to the stretch of river. Unfortunately, it was dark and I was by far the drunkest. I didn't see the ledge, and don't remember falling. I was knocked out on the rocks, but got up after about thirty seconds, due to adrenaline. We made it to the stepping stones. I made my way across as quickly as I dared, hoping for one of those sobering up moments you hear about in these situations. It didn't come, but I was very aware that if I fell in, the splash would alert the farmers. We made it across, and hid behind a drystone wall. We waited. We saw one of the other groups get caught. It was (I kid you not) quite seriously the plan to wait for the first gunshot, and then run. It didn't come. The torch lights disappeared back over the hill. We phoned one of the two guys who had been caught. It had been the police, after all. They'd taken the names of the two guys and let them off with a warning, and the promise to leave come morning (fortunately, they didn't see the boat, or the wooden pallets we'd stolen to burn, rather than cross the river repeatedly for wood. We regrouped (another group thought we'd been caught by farmers and were calling at gunpoint.) We regrouped, I finished my gin, and we went to bed (I slept on hard ground, got only an hour's sleep, was completely refreshed (but physically tired from the night's escapades) and no hangover, like always, bitches!)
spoilered for neatness!
Haha that sounds epic! I too have drunkenly ran from police. It was unnecessary running, but as you can understand from your story, when you're drunk you think a bit over dramatically. I like that you too have done drunken camping, I love drunk camping! I did drunk camping for my 16th, we weren't allowed their either an were worryingly near RAF grounds, someone actually saw 2 guys signalling to each other :)
A few small drunk stories from me, as you seem to enjoy drunk stories as much as I do: At a party I was at a while back (maybe a year ago) I befriended a woman and at the party, there was a woman who used to be in Big Brother, who got really drunk and attacked the woman I had befriended, so I defended her. It's not an exciting story when told short, but I like being able to say that I have been in a drunken fight with a Big Brother star (so classy haha)
Also, when drunk me and a bunch of people decided to go to the abandoned house. I loved the experience but it scared the shit out of me. There were dolls pinned to fences, a house that was so unstable it barely held us and writing on the wall warning DO NOT GO FURTHER. Of course people went further, but it was really frightening, glass broke and there were people on the second floor navigating by planks. There were garages outside that had a bunch of stuff, some of which I took but felt bad about later - until I found out later that they previous owners were selling their land to build a block of flats, which made me feel less bad.
Meh, my stories weren't as interesting but oh well :)
Do you live in Yorkshire? It sounds like if I'm ever up there I gotta drink with you, make an epic tale like that :p

:) I find vodka is too strong on its own, but vodka + coke is a looovely combination.

I started drinking when I was 14 and I'm uhhhh 22 ya that's it.
I love drinking but I don't do it all the time I do it at parties but I fell many people who drink shouldn't because they get angry. I just give everyone hugs. I like vodka but nobody ever has that. Bud light/weiser is ok but it has like .0000000001% alcohol content so I don't really like that. I've only puked after getting drunk once, same with getting high.

Normally, I'd make disparaging comments about how that's such an unmanly thing to drink, but having observed that you're a 16yog, I'll refrain... (and for the life of me, I'm trying to figure out whether that's sexist...) >_< (But I'm a man's man, and as such drink whiskey from the bottle and glass people!)

Anyway, I've personally never seen the appeal of vodka 'n coke (or any cocktail in existence, for that matter). Vodka by itself is a mixture of ethanol and water with a few other extraneous tasteless chemicals that increase viscosity which is drunk purely for the purpose of keeping warm in Siberia. What proportion do you mix it in 'cos I've had 3:1 coke/vodka and that was just bitter coke that annoyed me after a while.

EDIT: Uh, sorry, but could you explain your 'fear of veins'? Just curious...

I dont drink because it is against my religion. I also dont drink because I prefer not to get stupid, and I think being drunk is dangerous.

Alcohol also tastes very nasty. So that is three reasons for you.

Sometimes I get drunk, sometimes I drink for the flavor.

It isn't either or.

You can truly enjoy the taste and the sensation without getting drunk.
You can get smashed and not have a hangover, throw up, or have to drink shitty drinks too.

I'm a bourbon man myself, but I am not above having a few dozen decent beers with my friends. I haven't had a hangover or threw up in 2+ years but I generally get drunk 1-2 times a month.

As a kid your going to learn about alcohol the same way everyone else does (me included). Your going to start off drinking too much, or really low quality. Slowly your going to start to learn your limits and find drinks that you actually really enjoy.

The focus will quickly shift from getting smashed to just enjoying the taste with others.

PS: Drinking is indeed bad for you, unless you only have 1 dark beer/red wine a day. If you choose not to drink you might benefit from that choice in the long term.

Smoking and drinking are different. While smoking will always hurt you, drinking in small amounts a few times a week actually improves your health. You could google it if you want, it was quite surprising when I was told.

Edit: I admit I didn't check to see if anyone had told you before I posted. I apologize good sir

OP:

Yes I drink. I used to drink way to much, to the point of puking up blood.

After that little episode (it kinda sucked a little) i've gone back to drinking "normal" amounts. about 5 or 6 JD's and cokes will do me for an entire night (If this still seems like a lot to you, before I was going through about 5 litres of vodka cokes and various ciders on a night out).

I'm 18 and I don't drink. At all. I don't do it, partly because I dislike it, and partly out of the desire for physiological optimality. Brain development doesn't end until around 26 for guys. I'm shying away from alcohol for now.

Also, I see what it does to my dad. Not pretty. I can get pretty vicious the few times I lose it, and getting drunk is the perfect way to lose it.

I like a drink. I work in a bar, though, so I've had my opinions on it slightly altered of late.

Still, a few beers of an evening goes down lovely. Or wine.

I tend not to do spirits, as I just like being drunk, not utterly wasted. I did the utterly wasted thing for a few years (15 to 20, basically), and it's not great. Never mind that I see the effect it has on people every time I go to work. :p

I drink quite a bit, usually not to the point of being wasted but a nice drunk feeling. The kind when you can act a bit odd and be stupid but will not throw up or get a bad hangover. Generally drink Jack Daniel's or Rum nearly every night.

No problem with it so far in the 4 or 5 years I have been doing this.

I think my reply can be summarized by the fact that I am in a bar right now at 6pm on a Sunday watching a soccer game.

I like my booze.
