Profanity filter while playing Black Ops

So I'm kind of miffed about the profanity filter in place on the X-Box while playing some Black Ops. Of course the first thing I do when I get the ability to is make my own class set-ups for the 5 primary weapon types, the first one being the assault rifle. As I've always done in these games, that class set-up is lovingly named 'Assault'

Except for this time, because for some lovely reason, the beginning of that word triggers the profanity filter and is not allowed...

Please tell me this is some kind of sick joke. And sorry if this has been brought up before, I searched and couldn't find any threads.

Edit: Pretty sure this filter is on the new X-Box Live dashboard update, not the game itself.

call it 'rifleman' or something else... profanity filters are a fact of online life. Now can we just fit a profanity filter to anyone aged 13 and below who think swearing makes them sound grown up...?

How about since the game is for 18 years old and up, we can use adult language in it too. I've always hated language filter nonsense. They saying fucking in the game, but you can't write "assault"?

Sweet, another reason not to buy the game!

It's rated M for Mature. Unless the ESRB ordered them to do this or something that sounds really, really stupid.

That doesn't seem right.
It wouldn't let you type 'Assault'?
Are you sure it's the profanity filter? Not the fact that one of the default classes is already called Assault?

I'm pretty sure the filter is part of the new X-Box Live dashboard release. And the message was specific that is was a profanity issue.

God forbid you say ass while you shoot people in the face and get called an array of words beginning with F by 12 year olds whose mothers' bought them the game.

Nope, it's a bloody profanity filter. Happened to me as well when I was trying to label my Assault Rifle class "Assault" and my Submachinegun class "Sub-Assault" like I always have done in the past. I had to settle with "Rifleman" and "SubMachine" instead.

Doesn't make sense at all really. Like others have said, characters ingame are free to drop the F-bomb and whatever other profanities they wish, yet the game scolds you for typing "Ass" when you're trying to label a class "Assault".

Hell, to make things worse, Goldeneye on the Wii (a game that's rated TEEN) was perfectly ok with you labeling one of your classes "Assault", yet Black Ops prevents you from doing so due to the letters A-S-S.
A Teen-rated game doesn't have a profanity filter, yet a Mature-rated one does. How that makes sense, the world may never know...

We need to apply a language filter to protect all the 13 year olds playing a rated M game...wait what?

Funny how a game rated 18+ has a profanity filter.
Equally funny is when server admins create their own profanity filters FOR AN 18+ GAME.

Oh I can rip people's jaw off with a bullet but I can't type the word "ass"? Fuck you America.

they say "fuck" at least twice in modern warfare 2, but "assault" is too foul for our youthful eyes?

I find it odd too but their reasoning is totally sound. No one wants to hear a 12 year old swearing their ass off clearly because they think its cool, rather than it being a more accurate description of how badly they just messed up that knife throw.

It's not about the swearing, its about maturity the majority of the time. As much as I find it a bit of a hassle its perfectly fine for them to want to do it.

He's right. I tried last night and it said it was unacceptable due to "profanity." Nevermind that no one can see names of your classes, or that it's an M-rated game.

There isn't an ounce of reasoning behind the entire affair and you know it. For one, 12 year-olds SHOULD NOT BE PLAYING THE GAME IN THE FIRST PLACE. It's rated Mature for a reason. They are not allowed in to R rated movies, and those depict much worse in the way of obscenities, violence, and sex. Are those movies censored on the off chance a child gets in? Of course not.
Second, the very act of going online and interacting with other players throws out any chance to maintain a "pure" playing environment.
The ESRB rating system for video games is a very hypocritical. It has done nothing it set out to accomplish, other than saddle developers with inane restrictions.

Woaaaaah, their even applying that to class names? What the...

See, that annoys me. Pathetic on a global scale.
Tbh, if they did it for class names, I hope they did it for clan tags too, I'm sick of seeing 12 year olds with
****.
as their clan tag thinking they're a stand up comedian.

But the argument is...the game is rated 18+

/ridiculous.

Hmm - I guess PC hasn't got that neat little feature.

Heavy Assault (LMG), Light Assault (SMG/knifing) and Assault (assault rifle) all grace my create-a-class screen. I'm pretty sure there's no profanity filter for the text either.

It is pretty funny that they would bother with a profanity filter for a game that kids (young kids under, say, the mental maturity of a 12 year old) shouldn't have anyway.

And to put a profanity filter on something like a create-a-class name is insane. Nobody can see it, nobody cares.
