Professor arrested for shutting student's laptop on their hands

*sigh* whatever happened to the days when teachers could hit you with a ruler. I know our middle school math teacher used to give us cracks on the hands or heads with a yard stick if you goofed off. With a metal one too, no one of those pussy wood ones. ANd no one complained.

Then we had a high school teacher who would flip your desk if you didnt sit right in it and pay attention, and make you stand. Hell, I remember the one day someone refused to take notes, so he made them worth points, then everytime the kid tried to take notes, the teacher pulled them away or disrupted it. And still no one complained.

then our college proffessor tried to take a kids computer and cell phone cause they were texting and listening to music and disrupting the class, and all shit goes down. Americans are becoming to self entitled, and it wont end well for our country.

No, those people are asswagons. Self entitled to being treated like human beings and not cattle, maybe.

No, they made you learn. You werent going to waste their time, and its something that should be taught more. No one in any of those classes had below a 76.5% at any point, and there was no extra credit. Say what you want, but it had results.

Well, Stalin's mass starvation of the Ukraine also got results. You can't justify torture with "getting results". And that's what those teachers did. Torture. They're no better than the bullies we commonly insult, and doing it to people half your age just makes it pathetic as well.

This was negative reinforcement, and if it takes something like that get through the massive ego most American students like to carry about them, then suck it up and deal. Its the overprotective parents that are dragging this society down. If I had ever went home and told my mother or father that my teacher hit my hands with a ruler, I'd get a second one at home.

Actually, this is exactly the reason why a good many of the professors at my college dont let you use your laptops in class.

No, those are not bullying (though I have some other problems with you repeatedly laying your hands on the bottom of a child). An F is given when you have done badly, as is firing (normally). An F gained because the teacher dislikes you is bullying, however.

Was she injured? Did she experience pain beyond what someone would've felt if they'd brushed up against a table as they stood up? If it's something that barely causes discomfort I see no problem.

Because that will fly. and what happens when she goes to the principal or president or whoever (probably department head), and says she was kicked out of class, and its her word.

Also, because the screen itself is disruptive. Wondering eyes towards it can distract from class, other students asking her to check something for them, or showing other kids something. Posting on facebook with a friend in class, and them checking their updates on their phones. the ways are endless, but there's just not enough information hre, and its built against the professor. Get the other side of the story, and I'm sure this was justified.

Those seem to be stretching it, alot. There's still the fact he touched another persons laptop, which is not ok.

No, they're not stretching. Ask any teacher that deals with computers in class and they'll tell you, and the exact same worries. also, this who thing is circumstantial that the teacher actually "assaulted" here, with no evidence other then the accuser's word.

Also, when you enter his classroom, you have no property. Depending on the school's charter and rules, he can take your computer from you, and return it at his discression (thats how it is at my university). SO the argument that he's touching her laptop holds no value.

I'm getting seriously confused by some of the posting going on here. How is it questionable that she had the laptop out? Notes are much easier to take and organize on a digital format, and laptops are pretty much standard for anyone going to college, at least in my area. Beyond this, it was the prof thinking the person was on a distracting website(to the student, not to anyone else), not seeing they were and taking action, from what I've gathered.

The professor, instead of simply asking the student to cease what they were doing or to leave the classroom, chose to make an example in a quite rude way by closing her laptop, emphasis on the fact that it was her property. Maybe I'm just overly touchy, but I cannot stand when anyone messes with my things without permission, I don't think I would have reacted very well in that situation either - but not for my fingers getting hurt, unless he really did slam the laptop shut quite hard.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think the professor should be arrested or have it affect his actual job too severely. I do believe he handled the situation entirely wrong and decided to be a jerk about it, causing a bigger distraction than the student could have possibly be causing browsing the web, if she even was.

Actually, the school does, and if tehy feel that you're abusing its faculty, they can expel you and strip you of every credit earned so far. The school (depending on its set up) can operate outside of state law to a degree, and on an academic level, can pretty much tell the police ot fuck themselves.
