There's also the fact that if Prostitution were legalized, it would be able to be taxed. Depending On how big the industry actually is, that could be a fairly massive amount of money.Prostitution is already going on everywhere. Making them pay the same as legitimate businesses just makes sense.

Of course, from an ethical standpoint, I think Prostitution is absolute bullcrap. But it's not the goverments place to decide what's "ethical" or not. I don't like it, so I won't do it. No sense in ignoring a source of revenue though.

No not that, The difference of Pornography and Prostitution?

Meaning IF I have sex with a guy but just film to for a movie it's ok. But if I don't film it then it becomes illegal. Porn star's get paid to have sex in front of a camera, Prostitutes get paid to have sex with no camera. Porn stars legal hookers illegal.. Why?

For instance, it's not legally possible to consent to being assaulted, which also seems nonsensical to me.
Uh, well not to play the part of the square, but who WANTS to be assaulted. I mean, if its an accident, sure of course you should be able to forgive them, but who wants to be pounded into a pulp?

I'm not judging... exactly, I just am wondering WHY you'd want to get hurt. Believe me, I know pain and its not fun. Especailly when you're left with broken bones and layed up at home for a long time...

Well, it's illegal now, and it obviously doesn't work, so the most logical course of action would be to legalize it, but regulate it.

Require that prostitutes have regular medical examinations (which would be free), and if they end up with some STD, they're no longer allowed to run their business. This would lead to more prostitutes asking about the health of their clients, which would mean clientele would be motivated to get a license (which would be created if these laws were put into action) proving that they are devoid of disease so they can get their groove on.

That's what I think.

The next step would be to crack down hard on the underground prostitution businesses that refuse to get examined or follow the rules.

I recently read an interesting article concerning the legalization of prostitution. One point (that might offend certain people) was that the journalist discussed what actually differentiate this specific job and say the job of bus driver or a nursery teacher. Prostitutes who offer a physical service in exchange for money which a lot of people do in the work field, use their body or specific skills in order to make a living.

Now the question here is obviously what makes prostitution so different from other types of work that it needs to be in a category for it self. Is it because sex and the selling thereof is taboo in our society? Is it beacause of the fear that the prostitutes are being forced into it and taken advantage of and thereby recieve great psycological damage?
Prostitutes bring happiness into many lives and people pay for all kinds of things that give them pleasure - physical or mental, be it video games, food, massages, etc.

In conclusion: What is the difference between prostitution and the rest of the labour market and do you find anything ethical wrong in selling sex?
The reason prostitution is illegal in the US is because the "moral majority" feels it is immoral.

And the "moral majority" runs this country.

I do believe he meant either rough sex or fight clubs, prostitution is illegal because no one wants to establish a law that would have their daughter on her back.

Queensland currently does an okay job at managing it but corruption is still a pretty big issue.

I think it should be legal so that we can monitor the Hell out of it, and put a quick end sex slavery, at least in the US, where it isn't a socially acceptable cruelty.

Kinda like how I think that we should make pot legal so that we can get at least some tax money from it.

I think the license for the customers is a great idea. There would have to be a way to keep it up to date, like license plate stickers, except you'd get them from a doctor who verified you weren't all disease-ridden.

On another note, without legalized prostitution, there's "Bunny" down on That Weird Street. With legalized prostitution, there's Inara from Firefly.

The thing about prostitution is that it's ALWAYS going to exist. I hate to burst your bubble but at the moment there is a very easy place in the internet to find a prostitute within the states.

Lets see, for giggles I'm going to find one in Cardiff/Wales [http://cardiff.craigslist.co.uk/cgi-bin/personals.cgi?category=ers]

Admittedly it doesn't look as prevalent over on the other side of the Atlantic. So let's look at a US location, in this case LA [http://losangeles.craigslist.org/cgi-bin/personals.cgi?category=ers] just pick the gender of what you want to have sex with, and then your own gender and off you go.

This isn't some high upscale place that only the rich and powerful can get into, this is CRAIGSLIST! and from what I can tell the US is unable to bring it to heel.

And that's as good a reason as any to legalize it!

I assume this thread is mainly for the American forumites here, as prostitution IS legal here in Australia (yes, the same country that demanded the prostitutes be removed from GTA3)
