The title speaks for itself. What is the most interesting and/or dramatic way to die in videogames? This could be either standard death animation (Kain turning into a swarm of bats) or plot-driven death (Vault Dweller being subjected to FEV)

P.S. Sorry for my crappy English, I'm not a native speaker..

edit: I was refering to Vault Dweller from Fallout 1. And while yes, FEV does not technicaly kill him, game still ends. AND mutation robs him of all his memories. So I guess that still counts.

I think the way Marston dies in Red Dead Redemption was done really well. The inevitability of it and the way they portrayed it was really good.

I didn't bother spoilering that as it was described in this weeks magazine, but feel free to yell at me if you think I deserve it. Plus I don't think I would spoil it too badly with that statement anyway

I was a big fan of DA:O's ending, because it was entirely voluntary, and, as such, all the more bittersweet.

Otherwise, I think that Red Dead handled it really well.

So long as the hero's death is not meaningless - that he or she sacrifices themselves for something important - then I'm happy.

Tbh, a protagonist's death will always end in that black screen on end credits.
I personally think it should be made into one of those "your meant to lose" battles. That way the player feels that struggle as they fight until their last breath.

You have no idea how much more insultingly inane you made your post with that last paragraph, do you?

OT: The Batman death cutscenes from Arkham Asylum were really, really cool.

Tommy Angelo's in Mafia. I would spoiler, but if I say "Mafia spoilers" then its going to give it away anyway.

All I could think after Marston's death was that he could have just run out the back of the barn with his wife and son, and gone somewhere else. Its not like the FBI agents were ever presented as being particularly competent.

SMT: Persona 3 I think did it fairly well, shame P3FES came out and kind of screwed with it.

FF2 - Talk about a 'killfest'...for good.

If you're talking bout regular deaths as well(I'm guessing so)
I'm gonna go with deaths from crash bandicoot 2 & 3.
Always worth a laugh and makes dying less annoying

Two things: welcome to the Escapist... unless you're a lurker turned member, and your English is fine (better than a lot of native speakers around here on the basis of that post, >_> ... <_<).

OT: Companion cube! /jk

Can't really think of any... and the Vault Dweller doesn't die, get's pulled out barely alive in time for Broken Steel.

Oh yeah!, Almost forgot about that one, the Scarecrow routinely scared the crap out of me.

As a couple others have mentioned, RDR really takes the cake with this one. I'd grown super attached to Marston at this point, and it was such a fitting end for his character arc. Picking up as his son to fight one last duel was also very satisfying.

no no no no no the Vault dweller didnt die in the end of fallout 3...didnt happen (seriously it was too much for me)

anyway I hope to GOD they dont pull that with Mass effect 3, I mean Im sure it will be a valid option..but I dont want it to be the ultimate Paragon ending, liek fallout 3 thats just really slapping you in the face for being good

Wait, huh? Are you referring to Fallout 1 or Fallout 3? Cause the main character in Fallout 1 is the Vault Dweller and the one in 3 is referred to as the Lone Wanderer. And if you're referring to Fallout 3, canonically because of Broken Steel he didn't die, and that wasn't FEV, it was just regular radiation.

On-topic: Anyway, the protagonists death has to be foreshadowed, or at least make sense in the tone of the story. It can't come completely out of nowhere, like it did in Fallout 3 where you suddenly have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Neverwinter Nights 2 did it the worst in any game I've ever seen though. Seriously, I actually quite like that game, but the ending was just a punch in the balls.

Rocks fall, everyone dies.

Even if it is retconned in MotB, many of the party members still didn't make it out alive.

When Marcus Fenix get's ripped in two by a group of locust and when Master Chief get's shot to bits by a little grunt...Oh wait, that's what I wish would happen...
On topic...as everyone else says, RDR is epic.

The death of Noble 6 in Halo: Reach.
Because you live the last moments as the last soldier fighting on the doomed planet Reach, surrounded by ever growing forces as your visor cracks and enemies crowd around you and you finally get to watch Noble 6 meet his/her death, fighting pathetically against the unstoppable wrath of the Covenant and dying alone and forgotten.
A grim time to be a human.

On the upside, a pretty cool time to be an Elite.
