Mako from The Legend of Korra (sequel to the above mentioned A:TLA).

The guy is a massive douche bag who : cheats on his girlfriend, refuses to own up to it when called out on it by his girlfriend, acts like a self obsessed asshole, and then we're still expected to swallow the horrible romance forced between him and Korra, with the creators trying to force down our throats that he's such a "great guy".

Yeah, single-handedly tainted my enjoyment of that show.
I was hoping that if a later season is still coming later, the whole romance drama would be blown into something much more dramatic and emotional. After the first epic where they dragged something on for 3 years, having two characters just fall together in a matter of weeks seemed really weird.

Although, I agree. I highly disliked Mako because he seemed too self-obsessed. I liked Bolin so much more. I didn't hate him, but if he happened to die by electrocution (which probably won't happen cuz he's a firebender)....I wouldn't be that upset either.

Wow, nobody said Dante yet?
Well, Dante.
He's a smug prick. Everything he says is just smarm.

Protagonists who just swan around being smug and acting like they're fucking perfect piss me right off. Especially in games.

I've always really disliked Ryu, though I'm more and more coming to the realization that maybe we're not supposed to like him, and that maybe he's not the protagonist of the Street Fighter universe (inasmuch as it has a narrative at all).
I'd say Guile, Chun-Li, Cammy and Rose are the protagonists in the SF universe, they actually work towards stopping Shadaloo et al, Ryu just wanders trying to make himself stronger, only showing up at the end if something far from the revelant characters needs Hadoken'd. Ryu isn't likeable or a protagonist, he's just kind of a tool, even to his best friend Ken.
Nah, Ryu's just neutral. He's not a protagonist of any sorts, despite being the main character, since he's just the archetypal "wandering warrior". That's why he's the main character, that's why he's the best fighter for beginners, that's why you can just project yourself onto him. He's a blank slate, but that's the point.

And besides, if anyone's a tool between the two, it's Ken. But he's not a tool either; he's similar to Ryu, only he happens to have a family to look after and he can get a bit arrogant at times.

Snarf from the original Thundercats. I would take any Michael Bay transformer nightmare or a hundred Nathan Drakes on a "best quote evar" video than *any* scene with effing Snarf :p

Oooh, a classic case of "Why the fuck did they replace my protagonist"? The protagonist to the sequel of Drakengard, this little annoying butt monkey does nothing but whine and complain to every occurrence that happens, and even does the exact opposite of what the heroes were doing in the first game. After playing a badass who did not even bat an eye at what he had to do for the sake of Good and World saving; this is a very jarring transition. It's pretty bad when even the characters in the game are poking fun at your protagonist's complaints.

I would give a few more details, but that would include plot; and I'd hate to spoil that...
I so saw that coming...I do agree with you. I mean I never played any of the Drakengard games (Curse my days of killing hookers with my PS2...And fooling around with Daxter) but I do hate those kind of protagonists. D:<

Nathan fucking Drake.

Every word that spews from his pompous, generic, pretty boy mouth just makes me want to smash a Crystal Skull DVD and jam the pieces in his eyes(2 birds with one stone).

Incidentally I really liked Uncharted 2... I just hate the man I'm guiding through it.
Im tempted to get Playstation all stars...so I can beat him up
I ditto that so much. I will take my Cole or Jak and Daxter and bash his pretty little face in that I want to do so much. Can't escape this situation HUH! >:D

Okay, for me I hate Kratos because he goes out of his way for revenge and I hate bad/evil people. I also hate renegade Shepard from the ME series, I mean I just hate his asshole attitude with a passion.

And all other evil protagonists out there, I just fully hate them to the extend where I do not want to play the game. (For some reason I feel like that the Saints Row series is about one man rebelling against evil governments.)

Tidus from FF10 was terrible.
I hated Locke from FF6
Vaan from FF12 was bad.
Ash from Pokemon is just annoying.
I never liked Thrall in WC3.
Goku always kinda pissed me off in DBZ.
Gohan REALLY pissed me off a lot in DBZ.
Po in Kung Fu Panda I never really liked.
While Optimus prime was at least a competent leader Rodimus Prime was just suck and ass. And Spike whit whicky always sucked.
Let's see... ahh yes The scooby-doo gang. I never liked any of them.
Dexter from dexter's lab made me want to punch kittens.
The hero from adventure time makes me want to kick puppies whatever his name is.
Zidane from FF9 made me want to shoot baby monkeys... in the kneecaps.
Yugo from Wakfu was just got on my nerves.
Yugi from Yugioh was pretty terrible IMO, but the show it's self was never anything special. Still it doesn't give him a free ride.
But the worst? The one I hate the most?
Neo from the Matrix. any of them, and all of them. I hate these bullshit stories that revolve around one "special" chosen person who just happens to do all this amazing stuff for no other reason than there would be no plot if they could not.

Yes, I'm sure. Cole was not perfect. Hell, the entire last act of the game was him owning up to his issues. Jack, though...AGH!
Fair enough, I guess I never really got that whole 'perfect'-vibe from Jack though. Depends what you mean by perfect, of course, but...
I mean, he basically tortures Monroe and more or less leaves him to die. Monroe wasn't exactly a good guy, sure, but still. Torture is pretty much -the- grey area, isn't it?

Oh, and for the topic: I guess it's more the actor(s), but eh: Anakin Skywalker.

Captcha: i'm sorry dave - Oh shi...
Yes, he does torture Monroe, but he doesn't get called on it, whereas every single gray thing that Cole did, he got called on at some point, unless he was partnered with Roy Earle.

As for perfect, here's what I mean.
He's a better investigator than Phelps (he uncovers the story behind the conspiracy in a matter of days), he was a better soldier than Phelps, he had more respect from the troops in World War II than Phelps, he is the one who gets to take down the conspiracy
...You see my point a bit more?

Probably Sonic the Hedgehog. He's always been a cocky shit, but at times he fucking pushes it to the goddamn max, and you just want to cut off his legs, tear out his tongue, and tell Sonic Team to make something else.

Which is why this is the most satisfying picture of Sonic in the history of forever.

I can't remember her name, but the main character from Black Swan. She wasn't the only one either. I hated every single character in that film. They are all horrible, horrible people.

My candidate: Carl 'CJ' Johnson. Clueless, whining, punk.[/quote]

Seconded. Especially what he did with the Port-a-potty.

I mean, burying a bloke alive just because one of his friends called his sister (Who, incidentally, actually happens to BE ONE) a hooker.

Jesus Tapdancing. And yet he constantly insists he's just 'doin' it fo' da' hood'?

At least Tommy Vercetti admitted he was a monster...

The Dovahkin from Skyrim was a sociopath lizardman with no redeeming qualities who slaughtered anyone who came into his path and stole anything of value. It's hard to sympathize with that guy.

Pretty much the entire cast of the National Treasure movies for the exact same reasons that were listed for Nathan Drake. Also, every incarnation of Anakin Skywalker in the prequel trilogy (but especially the second one). The main characters of your typical generic, modern shooter, like Killzone and Gears of War. I second Kratos, who is the most bland, repulsive and mindlessly unsympathetic and uninteresting character that I've ever had the pleasure of playing.

I thought all of your human squad mates from the Mass Effect trilogy were either annoying or boring (special mention goes to Ashley and James Verga or Vegas or how ever the hell you spell that fucking useless retard's name). Same with a lot of blockbuster movies that people have mentioned, such as the Transformer sequels, Green Lantern, John Carter and many, many more.

A lot of shounen animes' protagonists are a bunch of morons (e.g. Naruto) but a particularly memorable example had to go to Albert from Gankutsuou (who I've mentioned in a previous thread) who basically got his friend killed by being a complete imbecile. Although I haven't played it, judging from the review that I've seen from The Spoony One, Tidus and his gang can all drop dead for all I care and Vaan from FFXII is even worse, which warrants some kind achievement. For now that's all I can think of, but I'm sure I can remember plenty more.

There are too many to say so I will put them into one big category: Unintentional whinny emo kids. (eg Squall from FFVIII)

See if a character is a protagonist and is intentionally unlikable, whinny and angsty (eg Shinji Ikari from NGE) then I understand it, but when a writer is like "look how deep and troubled this guy is, he has no visible feelings but that's cool, isn't that awesome?" It just pisses me off.

Oh and shounen anime protagonists with really grating voices such as Ash from Pokemon and Naruto.

Tidus from Final Fantasy X. Oh god, Tidus. Annoying voice, self-centered, whiny, and he never shuts up. And you want to know what the hell of it is? The voice actor used almost the exact same voice as Vandal, the blood bank teller in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, and he was actually pretty damn creepy, especially when you find out where his supply comes from...

This man makes me want to vomit:

People can say what they want about generic unlikable characters but all of those pale in comparison to this guy.

Ninja'd

I find it sad that I find Kratos, a character who spend his time murdering everyone and everything he encounters and bitching about his dead family, more likable than Dante. I actually kind of liked DMC4 because Nero was less of a douche.

Maybe the reboot will have a likable main character

Also Annakin Skywalker.
