Based on box art, Prototype definitely. The only colour other than black or white is red, which stands out very effectively, and the fact that it's on a white background makes the character that much more visible. The fact that he's in profile helps with the minimalism of it as well.

IMO the infamous guy looks like guy from Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Could be his twin for all I know.
Now you mention it he does look like that guy. Personally I like the prototype box art however it leaves alot to be desired.

It's actually quite fun to look at the mock-up box art. Check it out:

I choose Prototype, obviously.
I dislike all 3 of those. I prefer the one at the top in the OP. It has a distinct Black and White thing to it. With most if not all games choosing the dark moody contrast background for their vidjeo gaems box art {See: Any game in the last few years}, White will stand out amongst the crowd. While in itself, this won't do much. They darkened it up a bit to make it contrast even further, and to spice it up, they added the Red. Now Red in itself is a very vibrant alert kind of colour. This is why Police have it flashing on their cars. This will arouse your interest, as you want to know just what on earth the reds there for. What's the red signify? What role does the red have? We don't know it's an infection just from the box art. You'd have to follow the game to know that.

inFamous on the other hand, is dark all around. Shadowy character, Shadowy city, Shadowy yellow shirt. The only vibrant piece about it, is the lightning. You wouldn't believe this game has much depth other than "Shadowy broody character with lightning powers", even though the game itself is very intricate, the box art doesn't do it any justice.

Prototype is the better design of those two.

It's colours are much clearer and the layout is less cluttered.
There's so much in the infamous cover that it looks quite amateurish, neither is very distinctive but Prototype is definately the better executed there.

Apparantly this is the PS3 box art, but it says that there will be 1 to 8 players online...Either phony box art, or well kept secret multiplayer mode?

Infamous is much better. The Prototype one looks a little... cheap I guess. Just looks like part of some random piece of concept art was pasted on a white background with the logo thrown on top. Infamous looks as if a lot more thought and effort has gone into creating the box art. Also it gives a better idea of the sort of game it is as you can tell it's based in a city. Based on that concept art, Prototype could take place anywhere.

If I imagine that I knew nothing about either game, I think the Infamous art would catch my eye before the Prototype one. I can't stand cheap looking box art.

That cover works well because of The Hulk's comic book origins, and the fact that The hulk is a lot more iconic than a bloke in a hoodie.

Aside, I think the box art won't be the main influence of sales; the fact that one is cross-platform means it has a much larger market.

I love the Prototype box art, honestly. I want, and WILL get, both of the games, but if I was just walking through the store, the pop of black on white and the extremely clean execution of Prototype would force me to go pick it up.

I kinda like the ability to shape shift into a weapon not just shoot lightning out of your finger tips. Prototype all the way.

That's a bad thing how?
Hmmm... not sure actually. I'm kinda in two minds about it. I'm not sure whether not knowing where it takes place or anything about it other than the appearance of the main character would make you more likely to pick it up and look at the back or not.

Hard to know fully as I know a lot about both games and so it's hard to be objective. And I guess preference depends on which you prefer the look of and what other characteristics you place on box art being successful or not. I prefer box art to not only look good but also tell you a few things about the game. And in this case the Infamous box art both looks better and tells me more about the kind of game that it is.

The front of that is very bad. The dull colours mean that it wouldn't stand out against other covers, thus would be a poor choice.

haven't heard about any multiplayer, and being this close to release without any official declaration would be strange as multiplayer would improve the games selling point greatly.

Prototype looks much more badass. Compared to that boxart, the guy on Infamous just looks kinda wimpy. Prototype all the way.

to IsoNeko,

that is definitely fake IMO

if you look at the ESRB ratings box the word "gore" and "violence" should both be capitalized and they're not

also i dont want to believe that the actual box art is that brown...

VGBoxart is a website for fan created game covers, so it's unofficial.

What I like in box art is something that will make me want to pick up and read the back. Prototypes mysterious design would make me want to do that, I want to find out more about the game. Infamous's design lets me know automatically what the game is about, and what I'll find. There is a man, similar to the Force Unleashed character, that shoots lightning, in a dark, half destroyed city. While the game is far more intricate than that, that's what the box art represents to me. Prototype has this mysterious thing taking over a man, similar to the Assassin's Creed character Altair, with a gigantic blade on his arm, and a perfectly white background which is even more mysterious.

To address the OP, the chances of Infamous selling more than Prototype are pretty slim since Prototype is an awesome open world game on multiple platforms while InFamous will be an awesome open world game that's a PS3 Exclusive. This weighs heavily in Prototype's favor since more people can actually buy the game.

EDIT: Looking back at your post I see that you mentioned that, but my opinion still stands that it will mean that Prototype sells more.

I'm with prototype cover, that knife-arm just looks so appealing and gruesome.
