Well, you're ruling out the PC and I understand why (different configs for different budgets and use...), but it played a big part in my choice of going for a Wii. I have a powerfull enough PC and that's my main solo gaming plateform for FPS, RTS, Strategy and RPGs/MMOs.

Recently got a Wii for the classic Nintendo licences, as well as the multiplayer casual possibilities. Great console for my use, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it if that's to be your unique console and you play a lot.

Looking only at the available games on the market and the ones coming in the few next months, my go would be X360. The PS3 doesn't have enough games and upcoming exclusivities to seduce me, right now, though it has potential. (and to be honest, I couldn't care less 'bout Blue-Ray)

But trying to guess what the market will be in more than a year seems pretty impossible, so anyone willing to get THE console that will be the mainstream gaming plateform of the years to come is actually walking on eggs...

Now I know its not likely to be an opinion that is going to be held in the highest regard on these here internets, but I have to say that the system I enjoyed the most last year was the Wii. Since I was (finally) able to pick one up last January, I've really had nothing but great things to say about the console, and have played it just about every day since, everything from from brief to epic sessions. Now granted, at my place theres always a bunch of people around, so of course not only do they usually want to "check out the Wii", but, as been much lauded about the system, it really shines as a multiplayer or 'party' system once they do. But even aside from that, its just really had the most games that I personally have wanted to play, and have had a blast playing. Let me elaborate.

I've been gaming since the arcades/2600 days, and have enjoyed or owned nearly every home system released since then. One thing that has pretty much always remained true about this industry is that anything good or original that gets popular at all will be copied and repeated ad-nauseum. Pac-Man, Mario, SF2, Doom, these are just a few games in the past that created or re-invented genres, and in turn inspired countless imitators that often end up killing the popularity gained by said games or genres due to over-saturation. It happens all the time, and will probably not stop anytime soon. But this negatively affects gamers. Because as much as many of those imitators turn out to be equal or better than their inspirations (Sonic, King of Fighters, GoldenEye, etc.), there is always way more crap to wade through (Keith Courage, Fighters History, Daikatana[!], etc.), and this affects gamers' trust and faith in future games released for that genre, and often their interests turn to other genres. I speak of my personal experience, and from having many gamer friends and knowing their gaming habits well. We get bored of the same old thing, and get into something new. Sure, we'll still play and love the odd good game in each respective battered genre that still gets released, but for the most part we move on, in a sense.

All this talk of genres and repetition does relate to my answer, I assure you, and here's why. I think the 360 is a phenomenal gaming console, and I'd hate to not have access to that wonderful library, but for the most part I've just been kinda bored with everything getting released for it lately. It's really starting to feel like 'been there, done that' with a lot of 360 games for me personally. Too many shooters. There, I said it. I just feel that too many of the AAA games on 360 are shooters of some kind, especially in the past 6 months or so. The crazy thing though? These games are awesome! Bioshock, Gears, Halo 3, anything Tom Clancy, CoD 4, The Frickin' Orange Box, geez, these games are perfecting shooters lately. And yes, I do like (quite a bit actually) these games, but overall I don't feel that 'pull' to play what really amounts to the 'different but the same' feeling I get from them all. They start to blur together, and start to feel like repetitious activities in a way, honestly. Actually the saving grace of the 360 to me is XBLA, which has an incredibly attractive and robust library, and many games only available there are now all-time favorites of mine that I would never give up. For the most part, when I think of playing 360, and its not for Guitar Hero or Portal (a FPS I never find boring), its usually an XBLA game I'm itching to play.

With all that said (whew!), I feel the Wii has truly been a breath of fresh air to the open-minded gamer who truly places an emphasis on getting 'fun' out of 'playing' their 'games', over graphics and raw power. I just wanna play some godamnn video games, and I don't need it all to look true to life or have epic storylines. Those are very important apects to games these days, and I love how the industry's matured to this point and do enjoy these titles, but, shit, that's why I watch movies, I don't necessarily need it from my video games too. It's no secret there's been garbage released thus far for the system, but the same can be said about every successful console, including the 360 & PS3. Geez, look at the PS2! But as a so-called "hardcore gamer" I don't buy those turds, so I've been very satisfied thus far with it. The good games, to me, are just SO good that I really WANT to play them. Galaxy, Corruption, Zack & Wiki (I SO love this game), Strikers, WarioWare, Godfather (admitted guilty pleasure), GW:Galaxies (which first captivated me on XBLA, mind you), ExciteTruck, Ghost Squad (so fun w/2 or more), SPM, even Wii Sports still, just to name a few a few of the 19 games I have for the system already, and I want to play all of these games all of the time (well, I could forget about Red Steel and Wii Play to tell you the truth, and Elebits was only really fun for about a week or two). I feel I don't even have enough time to play everything I have, never mind all the games I want sitting on shelves still, or soon to be released (No More Heroes and Brawl are both eagerly anticipated). And that's not even counting the many VC games I've downloaded thus far. Heck, I spent a couple weeks pretty much only playing Sin & Punishment when it was released.

Sure, not every game released is brimming with originality, and I'd like to see less reliance on ports and mini-games, but to say that's all this system has to offer is incredibly short-sighted by anyone who truly considers themselves a gamer, I feel. In a way, the Wii is the only real "video game" machine out there. That statement could burn me, but what I mean is that is has the most games that are just that; pure games. No pretentiousness, no elitism, no in your face-ness, its not really pretending to be anything other than a video game player, pure and simple. And as a long-time "hardcore gamer" I like that, and am drawn to that, more and more than I am to yet another game that simply has me aiming a gun, for example. I must say that I am incredibly interested in the PS3, and would love to own one of those as well. If I pick one up this year, and with the games released thus far and slated for release this year, this could be a VERY different answer next year. PS3 looks poised to show why Sony has been so cocky about it all along, and I think they're gonna make a lot of people believers. But, for the last year, the Wii (aside from my trusty DS) has been the most played and enjoyed system in our household, by far.

Crap where's an editor when you need one. No offense but people should stop making these topics because it just a bunch of fanboy baiting usually. Ill settle this. You wont win if you just get one of the systems. what i suggest is Wii, since it has good games that wont be found anywhere else, and then a 360 for everything else(sorry ps3 but you are not having a good time as of now).

I got a PS3 and a Wii, Wii's great for party games and i got the PS3 cause there are now some good games out for it and it's got more oomph than the 360, for starters you gotta buy an elite 360 for HDMI support, even my bro who's a microsoft uber fanboy went "woah that looks good, is it exclusive?" when he saw Uncharted.

Not that i've got anything against the 360, it's got a solid line up at the mo but given time the PS3 will not just catch up but exceed it.

I have a 360 and I just got a wii. The PS3 is ok, but I can just go over to my freinds house to play instead of spending that much money. I like the 360 the most because the controller is awesomeness incarnate and I like shooters.

I have a 360 and a Wii. I've had a 360 for 2 years and the Wii for 1 and i personally think the 360 is the best. Sure the Wii is better for just having a laugh with friends and does have some nice games (zelda being the one i played) but i just prefer the 360 so much more as the games on it appeal to my "kill things and laugh" side. I dont know about the PS3 as i played one in a shop and thought the controller was a bit naff (especially by comparison to the 360s) and the game that was on (which i cant remember the name of but it was a driving one and i think its one of the main package deal games atm) was...well....not very captivating. Plus the PS3 at the moment severely lacks games so the 360 wins it for me.

Also, I have a laptop as im at uni and its shite for games hence why i couldn't say PC. If i did have a good one like my friend then i probably would have said that.

Don't buy a console for the name on the console. Buy a console for the games it supports. Hardware without the software is just an expensive way to heat your home.

I chose a 360 because I wanted to play Halo 3 and Gears of War, and I thought the Live Arcade would have the games I want. Then, of course, Mass Effect, Orange Box, Crackdown, Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, and Assassins' Creed came along. (Still waiting to buy the last two.) So looks like, for me, this was the right choice.

Others likely will have different preferences, and so the choice could be different for them. Maybe all they want to play is Wii Sports, or they're desperate for Metal Gear Solid 4... and that's fine.

(That being said, if you're already looking to get a Blu-ray player then a PS3 is probably a good pick given the price of stand-alone players... but only if you can see games you want to play in the Sony catalog.)

i see that the ps3 fans hate how the 360 has too many shooters, atm shooters is the way 2 go, the 360 has alot of different shooters, all the ps2-3 have is devil may cry and resident evil and about 5 sequels and just cause the 360 has brought out bioshock...blah, blah, blah...
With all due respect the PS3 has been out for only a fair while compared to the 360 which I think is running to, what, 2 years now?

I don't own a PS3 or a 360 (although I did own a 360 for 2 weeks before selling it off) so this isn't 'fanboy rant'. But it's a bit unfair to slam the PS3 for only having a handful of titles in so little time when all the 360 had for a while was Kameo and Dead or Alive 4.

If I can remember correctly, back when I was a Sega Dreamcast fanboy, when I'm not sure my testicles had yet dropped, I used to slam the PS2 for only having Metal Gear Solid 2 to shout about.

In hindsight, the PS2 has a great number of classics (some of which I still own). No game console in the last decade or two has shown its true potential and have a good list of AAA titles until at least 2 or so years after its initial launch.

PC owns all of them.

You don't really need an Xbox360 if you have a good PC, they usually have the same games.

To me... the PS3 is just not worth the money, at least not yet.

I have a Wii... it's cheap, unique, and fun... a very good system to play with friends and for parties.

Personally I go with the 360. I haven't even touched a PS3 yet because it would be too much of my money spent on the future potential of the system. Until the PS3 library expands to include more A-list titles it's just not worth the expense. The Wii is a good enough system at a sane price compared to the other 2, but most of the games seem targeted at a particular niche audience and I don't fall into that niche. It's probably great for parties and get-togethers if you have a game where the controls don't border on broken (Wii Sports was a parade of frustration for me). The 360 has a menagerie of reported hardware problems (I've run into 1 temporary problem in my 1 year of ownership), but it has the strongest library of games, and as Anton P. Nym said "Hardware without the software is just an expensive way to heat your home."

WTH is with every one saying "there are no good exlusives for the ps3 coming up"?

Do you want me to list them? There's 104 - ONE HUNDRED AND FOUR confirmed exclusives on wikipedia, as well as dozens of working titles like "Rockstar PS3 Exclusive Project" that I'm not counting. And some timed exclusives, which I didn't bother counting.

There's 87 exclusives for the 360, including all the working titles, AND the Burger King games.

I don't know about you, but 105+ is a lot more than 87.
And the PS3 has games coming up that will be pretty awesome. MGS4, Tekken 6, LittleBig Planet, Heavy Rain, L.A. Noire, DC Universe, God of War 3, Haze, InFamous, WarDevil, - those are all exclusives I'm getting. And there's more.

What does the 360 have that looks good? This is a serious question, because all I've heard about is Fable 2 and some Warhammer game.

Hah!

Well, since this thread hasn't turned into a flame war or been locked yet, I guess I'll contribute to the argument.

The Three Sixty (I r have one, after moving from a PS2), in concurrence with what you claim (even if it is from Wikipedia) has a lot less exclusive titles. This is mainly because any game a producer makes for the 360, they usually deem it great enough to be ported to other consoles. Simple as. These people are smart, and if it works with the 360 fanboys, they realise they can cash-in on other audiences too. Of course this doesn't really explain why to buy a 360 specifically, just that a lot of the games companies which work on developing titles on it are actually smart enough to... I dunno, manage their finances by cashing in on other consoles at the same time?

Still, the 360 has a good thirty less exclusives (planned, at least?) than the PS3. Great, but we've already had games like Halo 3, Oblivion Perfect Dark: Zero and Viva Piñata for, in some cases, going on a case of years. These are great games, which got developed and put out in a reasonable timespan (say, this century) and lived up to everything they promised us. Well, the latter two anyway. In case you haven't noticed, my dear PS3 friends in general, Sony's associates are yet to deliver. Sure, you claim to have all these 'great games' lined up, but, as a causal gamer, I'd rather buy a console for games I can play now, not in two bloody years.

Sadly, the examples you named weren't that spectacular either. Konami have (if you used more reliable and up-to-date sources than Wikipedia. Namely: Google at this bloody rate) began considering making MGS4 cross-platform or face serious losses. Tekken 6? And people complain about Dynasty Warriors dragging on! LittleBig may actually be a great selling point, but is not due out until autumn. DC Universe? I'd rather go play City of Heroes/Villains than attempt at poorly controlling another cash-in, kthnx.

Oh, and that Rockstar 'exclusive'? Yeah, I'll bet my entire net worth that it's bowling. ;)

To summarise: Yes, the PS3 are getting more exclusives, but are they on the shelves?

...Er...?

Yeah, agreed. WII and PS3 really don't have any good games out yet.

I feel all the systems have there ups and downs but it really comes to personal choice and favourite genres of video games. If you are a fan of FPS, then you are in luck. The PS3 and 360 have shooter coming out their butts, and evn the Wii has some fairly enjoyable shooters. If you are a fan of the rhythm genre then you need either a PS3 or 360. They have Rock Band, Guitar Hero, and Dance Dance Revolution (Insert Name here). The Wii has Guitar Hero III and DDR, but they are so hard to find it's not even worth it. The Wii also has Boogie, but I feel dirty just mentioning it. Every system has it's gems, like PS3 with Uncharted and Warhawk, Xbox 360 with Halo 3 and Mass Effect, and the Wii with the Nintendo spin offs. They also have some of the worst piles of crap since Mario's Missing. Saying you shouldn't buy a system because it has bad games is like saying go outside because bad things "could" happen. No matter what system you get developers will go out of there way to make the worst smelling shit for it, it's destiny.

What you have to do is not look at what the system itself offers but what games they offers. Look at all the exclusives and find the ones you want the most, the system that carries the most will be your best bet. If you're looking for original games, I wouldn't bother with the Wii. While their controls are new and innovative, Nintendo will continue to cash in on their ancient franchises, like Pokemon, Mario, and Metroid. PS3 in sort of on the same path, because they have their own franchises from back on the PSone and PS2, but they are also trying to make new and fresh ideas with things like Heavenly Sword and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. PS3 also has the best backward compadability library with both PSone and PS2 games, and they have plenty of support from third party developers. Xbox 360, being the newest runner in the recent generations, has the most picks of original, but not nessecarily great, games. They have also been out the longest and have the best online multiplayer system, Xbox live.

When it comes down to it, all the systems are great and you'll enjoy each of them regardless of all the points already mentioned.

Wait.

I don't know why people keep saying MSL is better than the PSN.

It costs money, and the PSN is pretty awesome. I have literally lagged in an online game ONCE - and that was fooling around on GH3 (I know I lagged because it was me throwing a battle effect at the other guy, and he didn't get whammied til he got his death knell. I was sad. :( )

So please explain to me why MSL is better. It's not faster, from what I've seen of it. It's not LESS laggy - it's actually more so, from personal experience (I've played around on it at a friend's). And it's not free. In order to get a game on PSN, I have to wait maybe two minutes. So, wth?

As an aside, there were 35 working titles with the word 'PS3' in it, so I assume that means there is at least 139 PS3 exclusives coming. Some of those will probably get canceled, though.

Of the gentleman that mentioned 'no good exclusives out', well, I rather of disagree. NGS, MotorStorm, Heavenly Sword (it really is a good game, honest. So what if it's short?), Ratchet & Clank: those are all good games. That are out right now. That's 4... What does the 360 have? Mass Effect, Halo 3, aaaand... Everything else is PCable? No thanks.

It's because people don't understand the difference between software and the service itself. They don't get that pretty much all of the features that they attribute to live are actually functions of the 360 OS. Once you figure that out you realize that the only real advantage that live has is the downloadable content offered through the service which pretty much has almost nothing to do with online gaming itself.

But the PSN lets you download stuff too! Some of it you have to pay for (eg: some GH3 songs), but isn't it the same way on XBL?
