PS3 and 360, are we really that different?

Since I own both consoles, I decided that I would take a stroll down graphic lane with both my consoles tenderly holding my hands.

One of the main things I've heard in the PS3's defense is that the graphics are many steps ahead of the 360... Is that really so true?

When talking to some of my 360 friends, they said that the graphics are actually BETTER on the 360 than PS3.

Now, before fingers of conspiracy start flying, I'm an owner and lover of both consoles, I will show NO bias in this thread and will leave it open (of course) for general discussion.

PS3 owners, we know that our system is very good. Even if the graphics are even with the 360's, we still have a bluray player and gamedisks that don't scratch. (which is a big deal for me, because I leave disks all over the place). We also have free online! The PS3's failure rate is only at 10%, where the 360's is a 54%.
So let's always think of the positives ;)

360 owners, we know that when it comes to having massive amount of games, we're in the lead. We also know that we have a great online system, even though we pay for it. We also can't complain about the graphics on our console.

So there, I tried to make both owners feel good before showinngggggg, this.

I thought Resi 5's graphics were great, hence I chose it for our experiment, so here's a graphical comparison of the PS3 and 360.

If you snoop around, you'll find other sites that have graphical comparisons for the two.

I agree.

I was planning to get a PS3 slim but it sold out at the local store before I got a chance to get my hands on one (they got it in on a no tax event too =/) and since then more pressing costs have arisen so I haven't gotten a chance.

All depends on what you like.

Graphics wise, they usually end up the same. This is because the developers make a pc/xbox version then port it. The PS3 technically has better graphics, it just is rarely utilized properly.
I usually don't care much about which one has an arbitrary larger number of pixels, but GT occasionally compares them. In Arkham Asylum, the 360 version was actually a little better, but you could only tell when they split the screens, and even then it was difficult. PC versions are always the prettiest anyway though IMO.

The exclusives are where the graphics shine for the PS3, Heavy Rain and Uncharted 2 are shining examples. But as for multi-platform games, they're identical.

I love to game on the 360 (Gears 2 is loads of fun in coop) but I will get a PS3 simply because I like its exclusives better (Not a fan of Halo 3 and Gears is not enough for me to buy a 360). Plus also Blu-Ray, inbuilt Wireless (which the 360 lacks sadly) and quickly chargeable controllers. The ps3 simply suits me better

Oh yes, PC's will always win. They can always be updated, so I agree with you on that one.
lol Good to see that you and I aren't arguing and that we agree on something.

But, I have always been bothered by people who say they bought a PS3 solely for graphics, I bought a PS3 to play inFamous, Socom and Metal Gear and didn't give a left toe about graphics.
Same reason I bought a Wii, not for graphics, for fun.
I kind of just wish that we could become united.
Then again, I've never really been a hardcore fangirl of any console.

Oh and I totally agree with you on that point. But my boyfriend's buddy would not shut up about how much better Call of Duty4 looked on the PS3 and me being the cynic I am had to check it out, I saw no difference.
If companies took time to understand PS3 programming, then maybe even the crossplatform titles would look better, but that's a maybe.

I for one think that Halo and Gears of War (both exclusives to 360) look great. I'm not sure how you could make them look better. Well, I'm speaking more of Gears of War 2 than Halo.

And the same will go for Metal Gear, that game looked astounding on the PS3. (I also cried at the end, but that had nothing to do with graphics, lol)

Heh, I am not so mean when my fanboy mode isn't initiated.

I dislike anyone who buys anything for graphics. Crysis was an awful game. Why? Because it was just a graphics engine with a little gameplay. I have the Wii, a top of the line PC, and I plan on getting a PS3 so I will have practically all ranges of the spectrum.

Union is impossible for the simple reason that when someone spends 300 dollars on something, they have some stupid urge to feel like they are smarter than everyone else for their choice. It is just how humans work. I commend your efforts though ^.^

I don't think multi-platform developers are going to take time to optimize the game for PS3 graphics, because at this point, the larger market is still the 360. But I'm looking forward to the PS3 exclusives that show the true potential of the machine, not because I'm biased (I own, and enjoy both) but because, I'm waiting for someone to push the envelope.

I agree with you here.
Why is it that whenever someone tries to "harness the potential" of a platform, the product suffers. Crysis and Cryostasis were average beauties. Motorstorm was meh, but was trying to show off the massive landscapes.
I can't think of a 360 example...

Realistically they are very similar beasts, but marketing tells fanboys who tell us that they are completely different.

The only problem that has bothered me with the PS3 is the fact that people said "It hasn't reached it's potential"
I understand that, but it bothers me that I have to wait for a year or so before a game comes out that harness's said potential.

How do we know the 360's graphic's can't get better?
I personally saw a huge graphical difference between Gears 1 and Gear 2.

I think there is just too much spectulation.
I still think Resi 5 was a graphical wow. =P (I loved that game)

I am definitely a PC fan or at least a fan of my PC, which I built from ground up after several bruised knuckles and three static shocks which naturally means that I will love my creation till death, plus PC games are purrrty!. As for the consoles, I actually see very little difference, gameplay wise for both the 360 and the PS3.

Die hard PS3 fanboys will chime in at some point and say that if you happen to have a 42inch mega-plasma-super-high-definition TV powered by a nuclear reactor then there is literally *some* difference to be seen with the graphics in comparison.

Equally die hard 360 fanboys will...oh I don't know, they will say anything.

The point is though, they perform identically (when not breaking down). The PS3 and the 360 has their own advantages and disadvantages but their is no denying that both machines are very good at what they are supposed to do. And that is all I can ask from them.

I own both the PS3 and XBOX360 and the graphics are basically the same. Its already been said but really both systems have pros and cons. PS3 has free online gaming, bluray and a few really fun games. Xbox has tons on titles along with Gears of War and Halo. I guess it really just boils down to what else you want your system to do for you

This seems like an elaborate Vs Thread in ones opinion:

Personally ive only played on a PS3 Once, And i hated the controls. Personal tastes i suppose.

I also think XBlive is VASTLY superior to the PSN, and i dont mind paying the £40 yearly fee for the experience.

Its certainly cheaper than smoking.

Well, the graphics hardware is set up better on the XB360.

The PS3 has 256Mb for the CPU and 256Mb for the GPU. Then the processor needs to take care to shuffle stuff along.

On the XB360, which also only have 512 Mb memory in total, the total allottment of RAM is shared by the CPU and GPU. This makes the xbox able to do handle larger and more textures in _some_ situation.

Making a clear benchmark between the two consoles is difficult since the CPU is so different between them. Any test needs to be done on a game/game comparison. Just saying straight out that one console is better than the other hands down is erranous. They both have strengths and weaknesses.

Well, personally I think thats wrong. I reckon its hard to improve on Killzone 2.
