So, in the press conference earlier today at Sony's GDC conference, Sony finally announced details for Sony's VR system. As stated in the title, it will cost $399. I put the other prices there as well. Now, the VR device requires a PS4, a PS Camera, and at least 2 Dualshock controllers or PS Move controllers. None of these will come with the box.

A big thing to mention is the amount of developers ready for the system though. There are 230 developers on board with some of the bigger ones shown here:

So...what do you guys think? On one hand, it's the cheapest VR device being $100 cheaper than the next cheapest VR device. It also has the backing of many high-profile Japanese companies. On the other hand...it's a $399 peripheral that requires you to spend another $60 on another peripheral to use. I do hope this takes off, but the price point might follow other console peripherals.

Is it still the cheapest once you factor the camera and extra controller / move controllers in? I mean, if you had a PS4 and a controller, you're still talking Oculus money to get one?

Need to see what the outcome is, how it racks up against its brethren in terms of tech and performance, I'm still hoping to be able to afford a HTC but more like end up with a Galaxy VR..

I notice this as well. I bet Sony could kill a puppy, and people would give Sony the benefit of the doubt.

I'll wait for when Nintendo finally gets back into VR considering whenever they try an experiment the second time things turn out great.

Nice! I already have a controller and am planning to buy the eye. So this is good news. Now release a couple of game compatible with it and I'll buy one. I did hear that FF14 was compatible and if i can live like a lalafell im sold.

Here's a link to the product in question.

https://www.playstation.com/en-us/explore/playstation-vr/

Like most of the VR scene, the pricing is a bit bonkers. Playstation's system is cheaper (Barely) then PC's offerings. It also appears to run on slightly less sophisticated tech, and is limited entirely to the PS4. I'd think that 'real' gamers (ie. the hardcore ones with cash to burn) would end up getting better value out of a PC model like the Vive.

I don't know. This all seems really bizarre for Sony. Why are they getting into an expensive emerging market that will, at best, be useful to what, 5% of their player base? What's the point?

Count me out on this one. I'll wait until there's a PC compatible VR headset that's under 300 dollars, then get down to business.

I would argue that the casual and console side ( im a console gamer myself) are more likely to invest in something like VR. For the casual gamers it would be something for short bursts of gaming and something to immerse themselved with when they feel like burning off steam. While console gamers won't have to pay as much for a perfectly fuctional peice of technology as well as already owning the required system without having to worry about compatibility.

Hardcore PC gamers have been known to be more critical of new tech and being reluctant to change their gaming habits.

I don't see how this relates to VR. The competition across other platforms is more expensive by hundreds of dollars. The pricing merely reflects R&D costs over the course of 3 or so years. Those engineers don't get paid pennies you know. And the software programs & equipment they use aren't free.

I still don't think it was a wise investment for Sony to invest in VR. And limit their product to one platform. Particularly with the high entry cost. Maybe they'll make a return. But that means little if VR as a whole isn't here to stay. As prices will have to drop dramatically for VR to become mainstream. And as for right now, the idea of someone having to spend well over $1,500 for multiple VR devices(some of which will fail/flop) to experience VR across all platforms. Is not very pleasing.

The equivalent is not kinect or the wiimote, the equivalent here is the $200 more expensive Oculus. This is why ps vr is seen positively. Everyone hated psmove and sony made that too so your theory is probably wrong.

The point still kind of stands though that gamers go over the moon about Nintendo gimmicks making their console too expensive but Sony can release a similar gimmick that arguably costs more than the PS4 system itself and apparently they are selling through stocks.
At least the Oculus VR isn't beholden to any current console platform holder.
But If Microsoft and Nintendo tried to pull that shit off, boy howdy would people throw a fit.

I am really wondering on how Sony plans on succeeding with this. They're already blowing all these resources to appeal to a niche audience. Will enough people actually buy this for it to catch on? I can see it tanking, at this price.

Not really the same with the WiiU gamepad and Kinect on Xbox One you had no choice but to purchase even if you did not want it and yes I know that MS eventually made Kinect optional or rather let it die. The PS VR is on top of being a possibly exciting new experience it is also an optional (expensive) extra and one that you can easily do without at that.

Sony is not immune to criticism and nor should it be. The PS3 for instance was rightly (imo) criticised for its pricing on release.

The thing here is that buying from the ground up as in getting a PS4, VR headset and the other stupid crap is still massively cheaper than its rivals which need a decently specced PC to begin with. Of course if you already have the PC to run the Oculus and /or Vive or a PS4, camera and controllers then the cost is reduced.

For my thoughts I am just waiting I feel the PS4 VR has the largest opportunity to break through into the mainstream for games but the PC has the biggest opportunity for non gaming uses most notably educational and ofc porn so I dont know which will succeed if any or if there will be more than one in the market when the dust settles.

yeah you did. either by the console or don't. that's a choice right there. that EXACT same choice you VR supporting people are defending Sony with "well it's ok because you don't HAVE TO BUY IT"

yeah of course i don't have to buy it. if i do want to get into VR though i need to spend at least $800 which is total bullshit and completely overpriced.

it's ok when Sony does it.

I'm confused, are you arguing that an optional periphial is the same thing as mandatory peripherals?

Because its a completely different ball game, People aren't complaining anymore about the Kinect because they removed it from being included with every Xbox, saving most people $100.

You can still buy the PS4 without having to buy the headset, so its not really comparable to the examples you gave. It won't cost every PS4 user an additional $400.

People still complaining about the Wii U touch screen?

Would love to see these people play through Xenoblade without it

Looking around the internet there are plenty of PC fanboys (especially), Nintendo & Microsoft fanboys throwing fits and pouring their salt. Its getting more than enough hate.

Of course fanboys always perceive the things they don't like getting less hate than it really is...

I don't think those two (technically 3) things are comparable. People are complaining that they are including shit in the console bundle that they don't want. The PSVR is completely optional, not to mention it's uber affordable compared to the other VR devices.

Also, there is no way Sony is favored over Nintendo. Maybe Microsoft, but that's purely because of how pathetic the Xbone launch was. I myself have a lot of problems, their PS4 was the reason I am now looking at getting into PC gaming.
