Her counterpoints, to me, seem to be pure conjecture. I.E. children whom display neuroticism have played violent video-games, and have an increased disposition to commit rape.

I am going to quote myself from another thread similar to this:

People that come from bad households increase the incidence of rape, not computer games that use obscene language and strong images of violence and sexual content.

There are people who have never been taught moral differentiation because of the upbringing they had - this has nothing to do with violent or otherwise games.

If we want to point fingers - the ease of access to porn on the internet, dubious television programs with dubious content that actually encourages sexual behavior - like that Jersey Shore tv show whatever they call it and others like it. These are real depictions of people that propagate various social influences. In fact, TV shows would have a way stronger social influence than porn does due to porn's one-tracked mindset - it's just sex and nothing else - pure fantasy (same as games, but games are not as one-tracked), there is virtually no indicator on how to get said impromptu sex (realistically - I mean, what? you get into an elevator with a hot chick and that's just grounds for a screwing? every secretary hired immediately wants to have sex with all the male interns? - anyone who believes that is a twit and was raised by twits). The suggestive nature of TV, and closer-to-real-life depictions of social interactions is far more able to bend suggestible people's expectations.

Interactive versions of this are hard to call a social influence because people identify them as artificial. People who were not taught this differentiation was obviously raised very very poorly; and thus the crux of the argument.

As everyone knows all of the major problems that have ever and will ever happen can be traced to video games. As a history major I can say without a doubt that the only reason why Stalin committed genocide was because he played GTA for nearly 25 hours a week.

Puh-lease!

I have another little fact for all those who like to point to these "statistics". Every single person who has ever murdered has at one time in their lives used (many instances they were regular consumers of) oxygen.

Please; those who believe in the "direct link" of violent acts to violent video games stop using oxygen before you too become a murderer.

Everything else aside she blamed video games for an increase in rape that DOESN'T EXIST therefor I see no need to take her seriously when she can't get simple facts right.

the best way of combating violent video games is to get the general public to start buying E rated games en masse?
They already do.

"Eighty-two percent of all games sold in 2009 were rated "E" for Everyone, "T" for Teen, or "E10+" for Everyone 10+" (source)

Admittedly that's from the ESA so it's probably a bit slanted, and it lumps T games in there too, but I think the general point is legitimate. Look at movies and television. The more mature stuff gets the attention, but what's the most profitable? Family stuff. Mario has sold a lot more games than Bayonetta.

I like how she tried to say that because people VOTED on what they thought the Columbine shooters killed because of, that's what they must of killed because of. It wasn't that they were freaking insane, it was that they were "exposed" to much >.> When will people learn that being right isn't a democracy.

I think I missed the relevant points in her reply then.
All I read was padding and smokescreens.
She doesn't have the studies, nor has she done the research to back up her claims of "an increase in rape", and by the way that she writes she seems incredibly comfortable in telling people that what she tells them to do is the right thing. Not because it s her who is saying it, god forbid that she should have the temerity, but because of the FACTS and the SCIENCE; banners that, from what I have read, she seems to rally under with a kind of timorous confidence - a contradiction in terms, I understand, but read her reply again and try to tell me that she hasn't retreated with a certain kind of arrogance that seems only to stem from her qualifications and her mystery rape study.

Funny Columbine is mentioned as an example of media-induced violence. [sarcasm] Because of course it was simply the fact that they played Doom that caused the two boys involved to become murderers! The facts that both the boys had criminal records, were known to be social outcasts, were undergoing anger management classes before the massacre, and had often met with school counselors due to anger issues don't matter! It was those darned video games!! [/sarcasm]

As someone who did research on the Columbine massacre for a school project, I always find it fun to bring up those little tidbits and shove them in the face of anyone who tries to blame violent media for the shooting...

It was bowling that caused it. You know the kids that did it went bowling that morning? See the link there? Bowling leads to massacre.

Not when you consider the American public. It becomes far less puzzling.
Sad but true. American INDIVIDUALS ignore idiots like these, but the American PUBLIC is collectively stupid. *shakes head*

So... she's blaming rape on gaming, something that really... the idiots who perform this action should get the blame for.

I find it so silly, though. Since it's just... statistically impossible for there to not be gamers that rape . Purely due to the amount of people that play games. Pretty simple. It's not like every gamer is a rapist. For example, let's say, hypothetically, that one in one hundred thousand people commit rape a year. And that ten hundred thousand people play games (I know these numbers are miles off, it's just for the sake of this scenario). Then statistically, 10 people that play games are rapists. Though it has nothing to do with the games. With her logic, you could say that having a house makes you more likely to rape. She has given no evidence of control studies showing that there are less non-gamer rapists.

Not to mention that it hasn't caused an "increase in rapes" at all. It's caused an increase in gamers that happen to rape as well. So basically, an increase in gamers. Well, how clever is she? An increase in games equals an increase in gamers? Yeah, money is going on these studies.

So its only Americans when bunched up start acting like a hive mind of stupidity? It isn't an escapist thread though in till someone shoe horns an insulting statement about America as a whole.
