Arrested? The fuck? Why is it that everyone has the right to be as stupid and ignorant as they want to be, but not as smart you'd might like?

Edit: Yeah, yeah. You know that I know. But still...

Wait, let me get this straight, a con woman is named "Marks"? How's that for irony? Anyway, if anyone is that monumentally retarded, they shouldn't have been responsible for that money in the first place.

Its sad to see that people believe this but how is it any different from paying any other type of psychic and paying them money to tell you lies.

This is not good.

Yes you could say that if someone is that stupid they deserve to lose their money. But why? Stupid people, or should I say superstitious people, still have rights.

And be careful when calling them stupid. A lot of people have beliefs that others would term stupid. I'm a skeptic and an atheist, but I do not think religious people are stupid. I think their belief system is seriously flawed, but I've met too many intelligent religious people to lump them all as stupid. Religious people cannot help but be religious due to their upbringing. They are mentally locked into one way of thinking and it is too emotionally painful for them to ever think critically of their religion.

Same thing here - some people have very superstitious backgrounds, or are very prone to "magical thinking". Often, they cannot help but think this way. Do they deserve to lose their money just because they are a bit illogical?

And some people are easily pressured, or emotionally fragile. This isn't a case in which someone just shows up and says "give me your money and you'll be happy" - these con-artists actually take months and months, or even years, to get to know their victims, befriend them, and gain their trust. You could say they are stupid. I would say they are just naive. And that doesn't mean they should lose their money.

It's very easy to sit there, all smug when someone has fallen for an obvious trick. But let me ask you this - do any of you regularly go to a casino? Well then you are equally stupid because mathematically the odds are ALWAYS in the house's favor, meaning that the more you play, it approaches a statistical certainty that you will lose money. So are all casino goers idiots? Do I have the right to say they are all idiots?

Or what about those who wear lucky charms? How could a cross or a rabbit's foot or a clover possibly protect you? Yet many soldiers go into battle with such charms. Would you call them stupid?

Or what about those in the US who LITERALLY believe that a 900 year old man built an ark not much larger than a football field, and then managed to wrangle TWO OF EVERY SPECIES ON EARTH onto a boat and survive a massive flood that covered the world? (funny that, where did the water come from and where did it go after the flood?) Are they stupid? If so, you're calling over 60% of the US population idiots. Probably your own parents if they were raised religiously.

I'm not that silly. Religious people are not stupid. Neither are superstitious people. They simply can't help but believe what they believe due to 1) Brainwashing or 2) Emotional attachment to an idea.

This is how con-artists work - they lure you in. They specifically target emotionally vulnerable people, gain their trust, spend months and months helping them, and then they say 'trust me with your money, I will help you". And yes, it is an obvious trick to you. You're not the victim. You aren't under emotional stress. You're not in the same situation.

I've seen the effects of these con-artists. It's terrible. They break families. They cause suicides. They cause people to lose all trust in others. In short, they wreck lives. Even "stupid" people have rights. We all do. We're all human, and if you have a single SHRED of compassion for your fellow human beings you wouldn't be laughing at the victims right now. You'd be feeling angry.

Have you ever given money to a friend or a family member and have them not pay you back? Do you think you're an "idiot"?

Dear escapist i can not believe what i have just read,a "psychic" made 290000 dollars by telling people that there money was cursed and that the only way to break the curse was to hand over all of their "evil" money to her. Heres the link:http://io9.com/5542011/colorado-psychic-arrested-for-telling-clients-their-money-was-possessed-by-evil-spirits.

So what do you think write your thoughts.
What do I think?

I would be inclined to side with you except she got caught....... she should have been more careful.

Oh I know that people are going to be like "WTF? Shes a con artist!" but come on. Anyone fucking stupid enough to actually buy into that crap in the first place deserves to lose their money.
I just wish I could pull something like that off.
Ahh America, land of opportunity indeed. With plenty of backwards ass hicks who will buy into anything.
Trust me, we don't have the monopoly on stupid, I assure you.

A large reserve, yes, but not the monopoly.
I completely agree that you don't have a monopoly on stupid. Idiots are far easier to find on your side of the pond however, just because they have a habit of being more vocal than elsewhere.

OT: How can someone be this stupid? No, wait, it's worse. How can multiple people be this stupid?
Heh, nice "reference" ;).
I don't get people who believe in psychics, sure you can say the same thing about religious people, but there is proof that psychics don't exist. Derren Brown (he's like a real life Patrick Jane) in his shows and interviews appears to be disgusted by "psychics" because they take advantage of people who are very vulnerable and naive, who've lost someone close to them. I'm inclined to think the same thing, this psychic should be locked up for her scams, however, she really is intelligent, there's no doubt about that.

Hey, how do we know it wasn't cursed? Those scientology people are still walking around.
But seriously, if you believe this person you don't deserve your money. Natural selection, survival of the fittest, all that.

I think it's at this point you have to ask yourself "were these people actually cleverly tricked or were they just gullible?".

...Some people just boggle the mind. My mind has been boggled and blown.

Ah well. Hopefully the people who got 'conned' will learn not to hand money to strangers.

Just out of interest, why does it matter if someone knows your social security number?

Anyone who falls for something as laughably & absurdly obvious as this scam deserve whatever they get, unless they're mentally retarded (in the medical sense of the word).

Apparently, if you want to get rich fast, just start a spiritual circle, temple, church or some other form of supernatural scam. History have shown a lot of people to be very gullible as long as you slap some kind of supernatural reward on your preposterous real-life demands for them.

Good for her! If people are so fucking stupid that they believe her then they deserve to fail: its better for everyone in the long run.
