I'd say all it takes is for the gamer to call themself 'Hardcore'.
I just see gamers, I don't see the divide.
This. There really is no difference between a "hardcore" and a "normal" gamer.
Someone who plays Peggle for hours can call themselves hardcore, as can someone who plays Dead Space.
Really, all it takes is an ego to be hardcore.

Being a girl and going to high school, any amount of gaming I do is considered 'hardcore' by others. But that definition is obviously..... dumb.

I don't like it when someone says that hardcore = FPS games, though. Just because I may not REALLY like any FPS games (other than SWB2, for obvious reasons), doesn't mean I don't love to sit back and drain my life away playing any of the FF games, or Resident Evil or something. Good grief, a 'hardcore gamer' is defined by how much they love the game and how much time they spend on it.

Gaming is someone's hobby, and being a 'hardcore gamer' is left up to them to decide on. They can be a 'hardcore' Mario fanatic or Farmville and so on. So don't be hating on the people who don't spend all their game time on FPS games. :p RPG and strategy games are pretty fun too.

Whenever somebody mentions that they are really good at the Sims, or at FarmVille, or how awesome Wii Sports is....

That feeling you get where you refuse to qualify their opinon on any further game related topics becuse you know they consider themselves gamers for clicking away at farmville.

Thats when your hardcore, when you consider our hobby to have a specific required skillset and dedication and take a disliking to people who claim to be among the gaming populus because they reached a higher level in Farmville. FarmVille is a game, but its players are just that players, not gamers.

Some games are, in my eyes, more seen as hardcore. Games like Half Life, which are a little less well known than the more popular titles, or games like WoW which take a commitment in time and effort (not that other games don't). If it's something everybody knows about and it doesn't take much research or knowhow as a gamer to find out about, then it's mainstream.

I don't think there is such a thing as "hardcore" gaming. It is kinda odd calling a leisure activity "hardcore", unless you are in the MLG, but still, c'mon.

Your time spent gameing (of your life, not per day) and your skill (a little bit). And if you play other than the "best" shooter at the time.
I wouldn't call you hardcore if you didn't play since your childhood (ten and down). Kids of this gen can't be hardcore btw, not yet.

Keeping up with the industry. Whether it is just for the games you play or for the entire gaming industry as a whole, if you know a lot about what is coming out, I consider you hardcore.
This to!

Depends, what must one do to be Hardcore period?

If I had to guess... Yelling "EXTREME" a lot may help, but I may have the wrong idea.

I think it's like the Hacker term; other people say that to you, and if enough people are saying it, well, it may be true.

I think it's related too to not the amount of time, but the performance you have while playing it. You may play 5 hours a day but you don't advance any of your skills.

To be a hardcore gamer I think you have to be... Dedicated to the hobby. It'll be your mian hobby, and you actually care about the gaming-sphere as a whole. The rest of it comes in, but if you regularly read stuff like gaming news sites, blogs etc. If you look up stuff that is happening in gaming, and it is your main hobby. You're a hardcore gamer.

It's being a douche and calling yourself a hardcore gamer.

Doesn't matter what you play or how long you play for, if you call yourself a hardcore gamer you're a douche and nothing you say about games has any merit.
quoted for truth.

It's none of the three options. It's your relationship with games and gaming, how invested you get into games you play, how much you let them move you emotionally, how much of your lifestyle you owe to the gaming culture. That's what makes you a hardcore gamer, not the game, not the time, and not the money.

The time you spend playing. A casual gamer will drop in and out in free time. A gamer will have a session to play a game and take a few hours, maybe more. A Hardcore gamer will decide to take a short break to go to the toilet then realise they haven't eaten for three days.

I would probably say that skill is necessary, but that enjoying the games that you play is important too.
