Question to people who prefer the original voice track for anime

In the majority of cases i just flat out do not like how the emoting sounds in Japanese voiceover, so a dub has to be especially bad for me not to prefer it.

Unless a female character is specifically of the "contralto of danger" variety I cannot tell one female character from another most of the time in the original language. I have similar problems with male characters as well. though I can at least tell anger from other forms of intense emotion at times. I don't care if the lip synch is accurate, but I do want to hear the emotion expressed in the dialogue and not spend most of my time reading walls of text in poorly rendered font on the bottom of the screen for the entire time. Anime tends to be very wordy and if I am spending all my time reading i am going to miss the action. In that case I might as well crack open a manga or simply read instead.

the voice acting might very well be superior to what I get in English, but I cannot hear the difference through the language barrier (and some of it is overacted to well past narm anyway) so I'm just better off hearing a quality dub in my own language.

There's also the dub for Chrono Crusade. While it's debatable on whether or not it's better than the original voice track, not only does it make more sense for American and European protagonists to speak a western language, the folks at ADV researched actual slang, terminology, and references that were around during the Roaring 20s.

Thanks, this is where English dubs can excel at; where as most Japanese dubs can't.

I go original voice track. I don't consider Japanese as better if it isn't the Anime's original language (some stuff gets lost in translation).

I only ever watch a dub if Yuri Lowenthal has a major speaking role. He is one of my favourite voice actors.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust

Interestingly enough, VHD:B actually had an English dialogue soundtrack before it had a Japanese one. The Japanese one was still being worked on by the time the English was recorded. The movie also was only theatrically released in English. Even in Japan it was played in English with Japanese subtitles. I was lucky enough to see it in theaters back in 2001.

Anyone who's been an anime fan for any length of time are aware of those fans who always watch the show in the original language, hell, might be one themselves.

This isn't to complain about those people, but to ask a question. What if you run into one of those extremely rare, "once in a blue moon" scenarios where a Japanese anime technically has the Japanese version as the dub?

I seem to remember that happening 10-15 years ago, but I can't remember what it was.....Was it....Vampire Hunter D 2? Not sure....

I know I've had a few rare experiences where the original Japanese cast was absolutely awful, forcing me to prefer the dub; Yuu Yuu Hakushou & Chou Gals.

There is also the rare occasion where I like both the dub & the sub, like Slayers & Excel Saga, which was also good in Italian.

For me, it's all about whether the voices sound age-appropriate for the characters, & if age, sex, build, & weight are taken into account, since those things effect voice, which is why YYH is the worst thing I have ever watched in Japanese.

For my Japanese Voice: Samurai Champloo, Naruto, Bleach, and if they ever get anime they derserve, Lone Wolf and Cub and Vagabond.


*One Piece's English dub, even the funamation one is not as good as I imagine these charcaters speaking in English, imo Sanji should have a French accent because everything about the charcater is French. Luffy needs to sound more male instead of hiring of Female Voice Actor sounding like a childlike boy. And Legend of the Galactic Heroes NEEDS A QUALITY ACTED ENGLISH DUB. I vote Christoph Waltz to voice Reinhard von Lohengramm

Wasn't Luffy being voiced by a woman mandated by the IP holders?

That's cool, though it doesn't have much to do with the topic. The topic is about when a non-Japanese version is the original track by technicality (like episodes of Space Dandy being released in English an hour ahead of the Japanese release, or the Lupin III blue jacket anime being released in Italy months in advance).

I know all about that, but thanks; you just informed others that did not know. I am glad you're able to see it when it came out in theaters. I didn't see it until the movie hit VHS. I rented it. At least I was able to see Princess Mononoke back in late 1999 in the theaters. I was 10 at the time.

Not an anime per se, but I find Persona 4's English dub to be superior to the original Japanese. This is primarily because I found Teddie/Kuma and Rise's Japanese voices to be incredibly irritating. Rise was incredibly high-pitched and squeaky, while Teddie was just... Good lord.
