Polish and versatility. Nowadays, you can play whatever you like however you like.
Blizzard has given you a lot more freedom on how you can play WoW, from old-school 'uber hardcorez' to more lay-back casual style whilst still giving everyone access to all the content.
I quit some months before WotLK was released.
To me felt like you only had the freedom to grind.
PVE grind, PVP grind, crafting grind and so on.
Too much emphasis on gear and not enough emphasis on skill.
Even worse: the community.
I couldn't stand the forums.
If I kept on playing I probably would have quit as soon as Cataclysm came out.
Wait, nightelf mages? Even after they swore never to use magic again?
Tauren paladins?
Good job, you just became an MMO and threw the RPG part away.
