What is the R rating good for? We all know it's to show how mature the movie content is, but does it work? Will an R rating make or break your decision to see a movie? Do you think the standard for what counts as "R-Rated" has changed?

An R-rating has not changed my decision to watch a movie since the time when my parents decided to no longer censor my movie viewing.

Yes, the content which gets a film an R-rating has changed over time. Can't think of any examples right now, but a lot of films that did get R-ratings in the past have been re-rated to PG-13, or sometimes even PG.

Well, when I was dating a Mormon girl, I couldn't watch them. It was pretty much just Disney movies. Not that there's anything wrong with Disney, but I digress.

Depends on the type of movie I am going to see. If it were say a romcom (not that I would watch such tripe) it would not really matter. Or I would know I could expect to see some titties.
However if a horror or big balls action film does not have R then yeah, it matters.
I aint gonna see a horror or action movie where they never swear and all the violence is cut.
Its why Die Hard 4 was crap. Fucking PG-13 rating neutered it.
exactally where the yippie ki yay MOTHER FUCKER where is it?

Rating doesn't matter so much as long as a movie is made well under such a rating. It's very frustrating though to see a movie get butchered or warped due to trying to get a lower-aged rating. If a decent R rated movie is made, then keep it R rated for God's sake!

I don't expect a lot of gore or tons of nudity, but I do expect it to be vastly different from PG-13 slop. It's the difference between the original Predator and Alien VS Predator. The original didn't have a ridiculous amount of gore and what was seen was only for brief glimpses, but that was enough to scare the ever loving shit out of me.

Erm. Nothing? I don't even look at ratings, they don't say anything about quality, and pretty much throughout my life they never really affected me in any way. By the time ESRB started rating games i was already of legal age for M rating.

I don't even know what an R rating means. I'm glad my country only really has three ratings. All ages, 12 and up and 16 and up.

my parents used watch die hard with me when i was 4. I grew up with cable TV and its several movie channels. I so desensitized to R-rated movie violence it doesn't even bother me anymore. The movie rating has never affected my decision to see a movie. I didn't have money to go see a movie until after i was 18 and now it doesn't matter because I'm 22. and even then studios have become very wary of making R-rated movies and the very few they make i haven't been interested in.

So if the avengers is R rated it will not matter one bit to me. if the next Tyler Perry movie is R-rated i'm still not going to care.

Also if you want to know about movie ratings and the MPAA check out http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0493459/ [this movie]

Never really bother looking at movie ratings anymore. Now I'm over the age limit it doesn't bother me.

Ever since my 16th birthday, I look less at the ratings and more at the title of the movie. Ratings don't matter, and I don't recall them ever influencing my decision to watch a movie.

R rating stands for "restricted to 17 and up". So basically your 16 and up.

Movie certificates haven't had any meaning to me for years. Even when I was under the age limit, I wasn't particularly hindered from seeing certain movies.

Thanks. Is getting a lower rating than that really that important?

By the time I got my drivers' license and could go to a movie when I wanted, I was already 17 and it didn't matter. Prior to that, I didn't really bother with movies.

I think it's retarded that it's not 16 and up in the US. By the time you are licensed to drive on the roads, I think that you're responsible enough to see R-rated movies and play M-rated games. It's so stupid that there's that arbitrary extra year that they won't let you buy these things if your parents aren't there, as if people enter puberty when they're sixteen and not when they're twelve.

But we sneak in anyway, or get someone else to buy our tickets. It does make R-rated movies a little less appealing for the time being, but it hasn't stopped us from seeing a good movie we wanna see that's rated R yet.

I've never ever payed attention to the ratings...ever.
Any movie I wanted to see I've seen since I was able to comprehend
what movies are (same goes for games).
