While I tend to agree with the OP, I'm not going to rant and rave at someone's spelling/grammer/acronyms etc.

While it may be annoying, I recognise that many people online aren't of English-speaking descent, making English their second or even third language. Remember that some people find it hard to convey arguments fluently in another language, and sometimes will use "internet slang" to help them demonstrate their point. I'm sure theres others (I know some) who have learnt English purely through the net and online games (notable MMO's), and will sometimes consider the acronyms and mispellings the norm.

It's rather arrogant to judge someone's language skills when they can communicate in more than two languages and I cannot. As long as I can understand what it is they're trying to say, it's fine by me.

I also try to make my text as understandable and readable as possible. Mostly because I don't speak any english (according to my teachers) and because it is just nicer to others.
But I would never try to force my way onto others, it would just be pointless and very egoistic, since I may be wrong and would make a big fool out of myself. Besides I can still read it..

Fighting againt bad grammar and spelling on the internet... No thanks, I would rather fight windmills instead.

I'm really getting tired of the poor syntax, grammar and overall language of the internet. I'm sick of the Us, the Rs and the pluralising with a damn apostrophe! To me it's just laziness. If appearance counts towards making a good first impression in reality, then surely how one writes on the internet contributes to first impressions on the Internet. Now, Gentlemen and Ladies, I AM NOT saying that perfect grammar and syntax should be expected 100% of the time, because that's just unreallistic and silly. Yes, I do use acronyms such as lol, brb and their ilk at times, but if you are contributing to a discussion, it doesn't really work. A bit of pride in your relations with others, even if it is the Internet, can't hurt, can it?

What are your opinions?

Thoughts? Comments? Queries?
You might want to fix that with an EDIT.

You really should've said something like yes I know I spelled "r u sick...." and then rant about bad grammar. You definitely should of said you ran out of space which is what I'm assuming you did.

I don't want to start a war here, but isn't there a small possibility that his statement was also meant ironic. It looks like somethins I would also write for comedic effect.

I guess it is best to either mark irony or leave it be, text can't convey a wink or a change in your voice.

Perhaps I ought to leave it. Supports my belief that perfection is a myth; rather that it's the effort that counts!

I can appreciate why you would say that, and please don't misunderstand, I'm not trying to appear pompous nor arrogant. I'm not trying to change any Internet conventions. I was just after opinions.

If he is a good friend, you can point out one or two mistakes, but never do it to strangers it just feels like a personal attack to them. Unless they ask for it, like me...

Disclaimer: The following emoticon is used under full knowledge of it's annoyingness and this disclaimer is not meant that seriously...

So feel free to correct me :)

Being the most pedantic human on the face of this grammatically pathetic planet, I would agree. But it's certainly about context.

Well done trolling-flame-boy! You're on your way to the Banned station, the generous people here on the escapist would be more than happy to buy you a "Report" ticket!

Well done generic reply guy, my post is not directed at anyone in general rather the attitude so where are the grounds for your report? Your reporting me for sharing my opinion on the subject matter or are you so very, very offended because I swore on the internet dear bollocks what a monster I am.

I have been browsing here far, far longer than most and have had one offence thus far don't try and plaster me with a label to look like the forum white knight I am more than prepared to call you out on it.

Yeah, I just wish people had better communication skills in general. It doesn't even come down to grammar and spelling much, it's more to do with being able to converse respectfully and intelligently. There are plenty of people out there with immaculate linguistic skills who waste their words on spewing vitriol, arguing over semantics, insulting people for no good reason (I'm not sure there's such a thing as a good reason, actually), and essentially just clogging up the Internet with garbage that, while grammatically correct, is no less depressing and pointless than the most banal posting of random acronyms.

I try to use proper grammar and capitalization as much as I can. Sometimes I mess up but I feel that people respect what you're saying more if you type properly

What in the name of god makes you think I want, or even give a fuck, if these people like me?.

Taking pride in my relations with the average person, for me, is the equivalent of throwing out the red carpet for a parasitic worm that has moved to the center of your skull

I am very much the grammer nazi. But if you can succesfully speak "l33t sp3ak" then you have quite the talent there.

You clearly have no clue how a language changes. Go have a conversation with your grand parents or read a letter they wrote but actually pay attention to it. Damn good chance it'll be a bit different then how you speak or write, and thats just a couple generations. Head back just 500 years and people would look at you like your an idiot for your "proper grammar". 700 years and it's unlikely they would know what you're saying at all. They may be able to recognize it as something akin to their English but that would be about it. 1000 years and you may as well be speaking Chinese for all they'll understand of you. If you think it's a bad thing go move into an empty cave in the middle of nowhere and communicate with other people by pointing and grunting. No internet, no TV, no anything developed in the last hundred and fifty thousand years or so, just a big stick and maybe some sharp rocks. Cause that's where humanity would still be. Assuming of course a species remotely capable of developing language hadn't replaced us.

It's been going on for as long as there has been language, the sheer prevalence of instantly transmitted text has just kicked it into high gear for now. Most of it will get thrown by the wayside for scholars to pick over in a couple hundred years, but some of its here to stay and new things will begin to appear. Either learn to deal with it or stab your eyes out so you don't need to see it. Chances are you've got another 50 years of life left at least, and it's not going to go away.
