well speaking as someone who uses these shorted works (not 1337 oh dear god not that) im not sure how to say this without looking lazy and stupid but i find it quicker and easier this may be because i generally struggle with spelling and grammar due to dispracsia (basicly leads to me making clumsy mistakes) so no i dont think you should base everyone over the internet on how they type for all you know there may be a reason for the bad spelling grammar ext.

Oh suuure, you had to come along and throw logic into the mix! And here I was all happy up on my soapbox yakking away about how people need to think before they post, then BAM! Actually that's a bad example, I was speaking about regular people without any dysfunction simply being ignorant of spelling and grammar, but you do raise a good point.

Well, it's not as annoying to me as it is to you, but proper grammar and spelling makes it a lot easier to read. It's just kinda sad when you have High School seniors and older who can't spell properly or use proper grammar (in real life, no less). I excuse foreigners: we can touch it up for them and they'll become better. It'll just be sad if they become better than people born and raised here with an education.

I find it absolutely sad when I speak to guys in high school who still can't even spell properly.

Edit 2: Last thing. Chatspeak doesn't bother me a whole lot. I use it occasionally, just not on forums. Just please, for the love of God don't use it in real life.

While proper English vernacular is preferred by many many people I find it to be a personality thing of how one types on the internet. How are we to distinguish ourselves among the sea of black and white without coming about with some new abbreviation or acronym. Take it with a grain of salt, most lol's and brb's are pop culture generate and they fade with time. To get overly upset about it makes about as much sense as beating yourself in the head with a two by four.

I take my WOW buddies and my counterstrike friends to be the best examples of this. While pwn came about by an error with being able to hit the "O" button, and not necessarily because it was someone purposely typing "Pwn."

I'll add to the rant by replying how much I hate "plx" or "plz". When we're playing a fast-paced game and you simply want to thank me in between all the action, sure. When we're in the middle of a GODDAMN CHATROOM and you have AN ETERNITY TO TYPE YOUR MESSAGES, for heavens sake do NOT shorten the word already short word 'Please'. The sheer irony of trying to quickly blurt over a word that should express one of your deepest feelings at that moment makes my face explode.

Seriously people, I have this debate with my mother and her texting. Seriously, I spell out everything, and I always have. She argues that it was "my generation that invented it" and yet I don't use it. LOLspeak is fine in small amounts, especially when a cute girl uses it. but L33t was never acceptable, and while sometimes misspelling things is ok (using "teh" all the time is not acceptable), most browsers and email programs have spell check, SO USE IT.

What I can't stand is poor capitalizations. I hate "im" and "id" the most. I always Capitalize Things depending on if it makes them Look Cool.

The only thing that really bothers me is when people just put "lol" in a sentence. No block with punctuation, not even a break at all, just "and then I said no lol and she said yes and I was like omg lol."

Makes you look like a fucking monkey.

Thing is, whenever I type something on the internet, I use context-appropriate vernacular. Consider a post on this messageboard or on, say, the Boingboing boards. On any board where I want my opinion to be taken seriously, I use complete sentences and double check my posts for any typographical errors. This is mostly so that I don't look like a tool while arguing my point and, albeit disingenuously, typing in such a manner often gives credence to my post.

On 4chan and other lowbrow boards, I'll often use the insider-speak so as to blend in and meld with the community. Of course, whenever one gets into an internet argument, which as we all know is Serious Business, I'll break the casual language and once again type in complete sentences. But for the most part, I'll type out short phrase snippets like "sauce please" (indicating I would like the source of said post) or "I FAPPED LIKE THE FIST OF THE NORTH STAR" etc.

When I used to play WoW (I quit about six months ago, best decision I have ever made), I would use phrases like "lol" and "wat" or "wut" as interjections or modifiers indicating my current emotional state. I would also excessively use emoticons like "" or "" since people in WoW often get butthurt over the smallest things and buffering a sarcastic statement with a will indicate to people that you're not being serious.

Point is, if you're a Grammar Nazi and always demand that people type in complete sentences, you'll never really mesh in with most of the internet communities. Sad but true.

Didn't really bother me before, but recenly it has gotten fairly annoying, as I've noticed I've started to copy their spelling errors.

I'm fully aware of the differences between "then" and "than". But when I see people use them wrong daily, I start misusing them aswell. Probably doesn't help that I've learned my english through absorbing it from TV/games/movies.

I am having to break my habit of using full words in WoW because it slows down communication in instances. It's too ingrained in me to type actual English (which I admit is prone to common errors, but I try to proofread and the Edit button is my friend.) In WoW, I tend to consider it a sort of local dialect, a kind of pidgin English. However, when my coworker sends me business emails featuring "u," "r," and spelling and capitalization that could be charitably described as randomized--well, if anyone ever wants to know why there are claw-marks on my desk, their answer is in my inbox.

On the other hand bad grammar and usage of words drives me nuts. I hate shortened words like the title so elegantly (and ironically) illustrates, as well as poor sentence structure. I am by no means an english major, but there is no reason to write in such a despicable manner.

The one thing that gets me most is when people use longer versions of short words for now reason. "mii for me", "ghey or gai for gay". If you are really in a rush and can't bother to spell check why make it harder by adding more letters. It is frustrating to look at.

But then again I have very little hope for the human race, Pen and Teller's Bulls**t has already cemented that.

I'm really getting tired of the poor syntax, grammar and overall language of the internet. I'm sick of the Us, the Rs and the pluralising with a damn apostrophe! To me it's just laziness. If appearance counts towards making a good first impression in reality, then surely how one writes on the internet contributes to first impressions on the Internet. Now, Gentlemen and Ladies, I AM NOT saying that perfect grammar and syntax should be expected 100% of the time, because that's just unreallistic and silly. Yes, I do use acronyms such as lol, brb and their ilk at times, but if you are contributing to a discussion, it doesn't really work. A bit of pride in your relations with others, even if it is the Internet, can't hurt, can it?

Yes, grammar has been known to eat shit all over the internet. Yes, it sucks. But, for the most part, not here. Most posts here at least have a semblance of order, syntax, and control of the language, although punctuation seems to go amiss at times, but that is something that happens damn well everywhere, so apart from hoping for radically strict enforcement rules, we prettty much just get to suck it up and know the joy of the corretly used semicolon, something those poor fools who have no idea about its proper use will never experience.

Besides, if everyone uses proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, syntax, and everything else that happens to be the prefferred use of language, we would lose that little micro step of instantaneous realization that we are one iota better than them (at least in our minds), because we know how to use Capital Letters! (Insert a modicum of maniacal laughter here, ended by a small cough.) Use it as a way to weed people out, to know immediately who to put your faith in if you need someone to check over a document.

So yes, it sucks at times, but here's the magic of it--you can get a nice fuzzy feeling inside that you're a teensy bit better than them for your masterful use of the apostrophe and ellipses. But, then again, that fuzzy feeling might just be a mold that's been growing for some time, in which case, ask your doctor.

Even I one is dyslectic, yous till can try to get the spelling somewhat right.I've had my dyslexia diagnosed 6 years ago and have had therapy for it. And now my spelling is somewhat better(words like neighbour still give me some trouble, but I'm getting there). dyslexia can be a good excuse,if you have it, but not one you should let become habitual.
