You are witnessing the evolution of the english-american vernacular first-hand. I'm sure some english majors or (if you want to even go farther back) some proper speaking british people look at your vocabulary as butchering the language.

I'm really getting tired of the poor syntax, grammar and overall language of the internet. I'm sick of the Us, the Rs and the pluralising with a damn apostrophe! To me it's just laziness. If appearance counts towards making a good first impression in reality, then surely how one writes on the internet contributes to first impressions on the Internet. Now, Gentlemen and Ladies, I AM NOT saying that perfect grammar and syntax should be expected 100% of the time, because that's just unreallistic and silly. Yes, I do use acronyms such as lol, brb and their ilk at times, but if you are contributing to a discussion, it doesn't really work. A bit of pride in your relations with others, even if it is the Internet, can't hurt, can it?

What are your opinions?

Wow, i have to say you fail epicaly. Your titles says "r u sick of people...", thats two not even words in the title then you go on to say how you hate it, good job on failing Mr.

O.T it does annoy me a bit (look up) but as long as i know what the word says and its NOT just one letter then im fine with it.

I absolutely hate it when people don't capitalize, or use "U" for "You" and "R" for "Are".

It's like nails on a fucking chalk board.

It does get very annoying. Especially when people put 'LMFAO' at the end of every sentence. Sorry, but its impossible that you laughed your fuc*ing a*s off.

How about people stop getting their panties all in a bunch over what other people, whom they'll never meet, do or don't do. Wouldn't that be wonderful?

If it bothers you that much then simply don't respond to text/1337/shorthand/whatever.

It all depends on the forum.

In WoW, you're in the middle of playing a video game, where your controller is your keyboard. That pretty much says 'I gotta type quickly' if you don't have vent. So you shorten a few words.

In fact, know your history. A lot of the LOL and U R and all that came from before the Internet mainstreamed, when it was used as a method of communication between programmers. You only had one line of text, so you couldn't afford to spell everything out correctly. Thusly, communication -had- to become short and abbreviated.

Then more people got on the interwebs, and started talking with those people, and the speak spread, and you have the situation you have now where a lot of the vernacular comes from a desire to expediantly communicate.

It's beneficial because not everyone can type at 60wpm or more, so if they ever wish to communicate a thought some time this year, they -have- to abbreviate.

People communicate that way because it evolved from limitations of the media, compounded with limitations of the individual. Not to mention, a language evolves, and attempting to stop that is somewhat hypocritical; So the language of the 80's is English-as-it-should-be, but you shouldn't use the stylings of Victorian English? So 80's English is the height of English communication and cannot be improved upon? Some misspellings of words like 'Thru' and 'Tho' have become part of the language simply because they're superior to previous words. The language doesn't care about archaic rules, it's only purpose is to communicate.

That said, writing out a paragraph like this in anything but concise english is inexcusable.

But nitpicking spelling errors or what not just because 'it bothers you' is also inexcusable, on informal forums such as this. Did the idea communicate? Yes? Then it did it's job, and you're detracting from that by being nitpicky.

Lastly, whoever is douching on the title: It's called 'irony.' And if you -know- that it is irony douching on it is not itself 'irony.'

i dun rly no whtru tlakin about?

OT; it does enrage me to no end to see people who, for all intents and purposes, can type with better eloquence than a narcoleptic chimp simply choose not to. I type so that others may readily understand my words, rather than having to translate it. I expect the same respect to be shown to me.

you better get used to it because its reaching outside the internets; nowadays people prefer to just say "lol" over actually laughing
Indeed, all the "nerdy" terms used in games such as Pwn,Own,Lol,Epic Fail,Epic Win and etc are being used by people.
Noob was also used in a Time Warner Cable commercial.

Let me repeat that. A fucking Time Warner Cable commercial.

Yes, yes I am sick of it. However using ' as a means of pluralising in words that end with an s is perfectly acceptable form. I've used it in work at college that has made up 30% of my final grade, and I have no been chastised for it, and they can be dicks about what they mark down.

For me it's a matter of how I treat other people. If someone sends me a message, email, or the like that is horribly garbled and incomprehensible, I'm automatically going to treat that person like an illiterate child.

I can understand some abbreviation in say, a text message, because the sender is trying to fit a long message in a small space. However, when I get emails from coworkers that look like "o hey i sent you tht file u wanted, send me tht site u where tlkin about lol", I treat them like shit. When they complain, I explain that if they won't raise themselves above an elementary school education, I will treat them thusly.

Also you might be enraged to hear some of the words being accepted (therby formalised) in the English dictionary this year, if you dislike this abuse of our language. Language changes, but some of the changes of late have been so frivilous, lazy and trend driven. They're removing Skirr! It's a beautiful word, in place of such trash as, Beer 'O' Clock. I KID YOU NOT. They're defining that. Do you feel you need that defining? I'm curious to find out the antonyms and synonyms.

Nice to see I'm not the only one who becomes enraged by those chumps, and people who don't understand irony also manage to piss me off a treat.
When you've got a full keyboard & spell check at your disposal, why bastardise the language (and make yourself look like and idiot) by using lol, n00b, etc. and/or filling posts with numerous grammatical & spelling errors?
It really grinds my gears.

I recall a time when on another forum a member asked an admin for something (can't remember what, but its largely irrelevant) using horrible grammar and typing 'please' as 'plz', the admin responded "if you're gonna say 'plz' cause its shorter than 'please' than I'm gonna answer 'no' cause its shorter than 'yes'." (or something to that effect)

Now I'm not particularly good with the grammar, but I do try for the sake of not appearing like an asshat when giving my opinion.

English isnt my first language and being dyslexic doesn help much with spelling and grammer. I wouldnt rather have people write descriptivly than have them write with perfect form.

While I agree that rampant use of internet speak (is there term for that?) along with the whole dropping of propositions is rather agrivating. I still stand by the fact that we need to grit our teeth and atleast make an attempt to see past the whole mutilation on the english language (event though it is a whore and a clepto) and try to see what theyre saying. Remember that content is important!

I prefer the necessary amount of letters to make whatever somebody is saying instantly understandable, on both forums and on games. No 1337-speak, or using unnecessarily long words (which I really hate), if I can gloss over what somebody is saying without having to read it twice I'm happy.

Mmm, yes I get very annoyed at people who type as such. Acronyms are actually correct grammar and spelling as far as I'm concerned. Nobody here really types like that though, part of the reason I like it here, second to the fact that I can actually get a valid debate going with sombody else that doesn't involve calling each other gay like a bunch of homophobes.
