Used in casual conversation, shortened stuff like "u" and "r" doesn't bother me so much. Not knowing the difference between they're, their and there, to and too, etc., is completely fucking unacceptable. I had to master this in the 3rd, it's not that hard to grasp.

As long as you get the message across, I don't think it should matter how they type. Let people talk however they like. It's only the internet; most people use it to relax, they shouldn't have to worry about their grammar, spelling, etc.

I type like this more out of habit than anything else. I would have to force myself not to press shift, or use 'U' instead of 'you'.

I'll freely admit that I subconsciously judge people based on their spelling and grammar. Not that harshly or anything, but it affects how I read it. I'm more likely to give someone the benefit of the doubt that they're offering a thoughtful response if they use correct spelling and capitalisation. If a post is poorly typed, I'm probably not going to take their point as seriously. After all, if they don't put that extra bit of effort into expressing themselves, why should I make the effort to read it?

Being the son of a senior school (year 7-A2 Level) English teacher, you may expect me to say yes. But I'm not going to. Whilst I will type my own work to the highest level of grammar and formality I can achieve (not necessarily the highest level in general), my judgements on other people for their spelling and grammar varies.

For me, it depends on what it's about, what the post actually is, how bad the spelling and grammar is etc. Only times that it really pisses me off are when there's bad spelling and grammar in posts complaining about bad spelling and grammar (because it's hypocritical) and in reviews/ essays/ big pieces of writing that seem planned out, simply because if they took that much time to make the post and can't be bothered to take another few seconds to check the post for anything incorrect, it makes spending so much time writing the post redundant. In those cases, I will complain about it to the user for the reasons mentioned above.

Also, it depends on how bad the spelling and grammar actually is. If it's only a few minor errors and typos (and it isn't any type of post/ theme listed above) I simply ignore it, as this is an international site and therefore not everyone here has English as their native language; it's only if the spelling and grammar is truly bad to the point where other users can't understand what's being said and where there is barely a correct sentence or clause that I decide to take things further and report it, as poor posts and users who are 'chronically and obviously incapable [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.116827#2193718]' to spell correctly are against the guidelines, despite it being a very minor infringement.

The main thing that annoys me is if there's a lack of thought put into a post or if the quality of the post isn't that high, but not necessarily bad spelling or grammar.

I can understand a few missed capitals or a few misspelled words.

Like an entire paragraph and somewhere in the middle comes out the sequence "teh", or "adn", or some genuine misspellings, like conciousness, or goverment, or other easy to misspell words, or words that aren't generally easy to misspell, but understandable like therepy, or anwser, heck it took me until 17 to remember where the stupid "w" was actually supposed to go. (after the s. it was really stupid too. It was a play on that old nursery rhyme called "ants were marching" or something like that.)

For the record, Lol is only appropriate if you genuinely laugh out loud, and you should follow up with a short sentence to point out that it is in fact genuine, or if you have absolutely nothing to say, but aren't sure how to say it.
