So inspired by the following story... http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2011/12/exclusive-white-only-pool-sign-owner-explains/

...I'm just tickled pink by the reasoning she uses. I'm not going to spoil it, you're going to have to read it yourself.

I'm throwing it out there; anyone else see/hear/read any other mind boggling justifications people use for their... "amusing" opinions of other people?

The sillier the better!

People waste time getting offended by her?

She does herself no good, so let life take action.

I'm very confused about this story but the thing I caught was it's a private pool on private land so the owner is well within her rights to be a bigot. Not getting any sympathy from me over her sign being stolen though
But she wasn't being a bigot , it's an antique sign , like anything from nazi germany , people collect those too , doesn't make them racist , it makes them a collector.People collect those stuff . Now i would not have put it on a pool gate but no matter where she put it this would have came up.

Sounds reasonable to me. Maybe she should have used another sign to clarify that the first sign was meaningless, though.

I lol'd.

Alright, I admit I'm fond of fucking horrible jokes. And being offended means nothing, so, whatever you know.

I dunno that anyone's rights were violated, but that certainly is some tasteless decorating. And based on that last quote I wouldn't be at all surprised if she was racist.

Christ on an applestick.

Okay, the story was believable until the end. She still looked irreparably dumb, but it was buyable.

...Until she said "my white rights."

Civil rights, you dumb privileged idiot, apply to everyone no matter what colour their skin is!

It's within her rights to put that sign up, but I'll be buggered with a fishfork if I can understand why she'd chose to, or why she didn't anticipate a negative reaction.

And, of course, she has to say "I'm totally not racist" in her not apology, because people will always believe someone if they say that.

I second this.

I could believe it all to be one big misunderstanding until...

'I have to stick up for my white rights.'

If someone wants to only allow whites, blacks, asians or whatever onto their property that's fine by me and I couldn't give less of a shit if someone for example made a blacks only swimming pool.Imho as long as you don't harm other people you should be able to do whatever the fuck you want.

I know a lot of people who collect confederate paraphernalia. Odd, since I'm pretty far North and all that.

Still, I'd probably take issue with them if they were flying confederate flags around black tenants or hanging Nazi propaganda posters around Jewish folk.

There's a point beyond which "I'm a collector" becomes indistinguishable from racism and harrassment. Honestly, this passes that point. Defense of her as a collector seems rather pointless.

That's fine; however, it does not free her from criticism. That's the other side of the coin you just touted.

I don't have the picture that I got this from, but it went something like this:

"You shouldn't feel proud about great things other white people have done. You should feel bad about bad things other white people have done."

But that's more double standards.

Another:

"I dislike white people because they are racist."

was that from a movie, book, song, tv show, meme, or a quote from someone?

Maybe she does just collect antiques, and, if she does, she should keep them in her own home rather than out on public display (even if the pool is hers). I know everyone on this site hates the idea of being offended (even though you even mention the word 'rape' and the much of the male populous explodes and gets offended at nothing), but if you're not white (and even if you are) this sign is extremely offensive.

If you collect Nazi antiques, super, don't put them up in the general vicinity of where Jewish/disabled people/Serbs/gypsies live because it's disgusting and offensive. It shouldn't be just the African Americans of that area speaking out against the sign, it should be everyone.

Oh, and before anyone posts Steve fucking Hughes, don't bother. I've seen it, it's funny and often applies but not here.

There is a difference between having a collection of historical paraphernalia and actually displaying it seemingly to cause offence. I think it's pretty clear that the woman has somewhat objectionable views regarding race. She has the right to display it on her own property, but that doesn't for one minute mean that she isn't a racist!
