o cool didn't know there was gonna be a black man in the movie. It does seem out of place in terms of mythology. But is the character black in the Comic? If so than continuity FTW! Otherwise y?

boycotting a movie because there is a black man in it playing a Norse God...absurd.

Hmm the CCC sounds like the KKK.
I was actually thinking that (damned ninjas!).

In every depiction he has had throughout history Thor has always been white with fair/red hair (largely because he is of Scandinavian origin, just as most representations of Jesus in the west show him as being white with brown hair even though he happened to live in the Middle East, how many westerners could you see worshipping a messiah who was Arabic?) but the fact that they have the nerve to make him black...means sweet fuck all to be honest.

It's a movie for Christ's sake. Thor is part of a dead religion (for the most part).

I can't really see what the big problem is.

Shit, 150 racists aren't going to watch it.
The movie's bound to fail.

Racist logic fail.
I think the bigger issue is the fact they haven't noticed how strange it is for white europeans to be worshipping the hebrew god of bronze age middle eastern origin.

The real logic problem is they are worshipping the wrong god.

This is pathetic but I must be pedantic Thor isn't a medieval concept by that time all of Europe was well and truly catholic/Christian.

Apologies.
Debatable. Most songs were written as late as the 9th century.
Sure, most themes they encompass are a few centuries older, but what is commonly known as "Norse mythology" originated ~300 AD and was written down later.

Quick reminder: Middle Ages - 5th-15th century.

Now if you're talking about the really basic stuff you can go back to prehistory and some Proto-Germanic tribes, but like I said, "Norse mythology" as we know it: 800 AD.
Ah I concede I'm sorry my understanding of the term was somewhat off on "Medieval" what I thought as the all encompassing medieval was really just the High Middle Ages + Late Middle Ages and I was thinking of the Dark Ages as fall of (Western) Rome - 11th century. When really its all just a confusion of terms. Learn something new everyday!

My bad :p.

Thor in Marvel is basically different from the Norse god anyway. I mean seriously, we're gonna complain about a comic character? The only time I have huge problems with stuff like this is if they mess up an already established character. Like, while I would not say an African American could play Superman, I would be extremely upset if he did so. Why? Merely because Superman isn't.

And before you call me Racist, I'd be just as upset if they made John Stewart white, or Kyle Rayner (who was of Mexican decent) into an Asian. I'd be just as upset if Wonder Woman became "Mighty Man" or if Aquaman became Watergirl. If the Martian Manhunter was suddenly from Wisconsin. Samuel L Jackson made an AWESOME Nick Fury, and there's a basis in the comics for making his character that way.

That being said, I've never been a fan of Thor and I don't know Norse Mythology (I prefer Greek) and so I don't know the character, and so there's little nerd rage to be had from me. If I were a bigger fan of the comic and the character, that might change. But seriously, I mean imagine if Plastic Man was suddenly Plastic Woman. Hm...wait, that might not be so bad.

I wish to point out one thing: Nick Fury from SHIELD was based on Samuel L. Jackson. So, naturally, he'd appear in any movie featuring that character. It only helps that Mr. Jackson is a powerhouse actor.

As for the Marvel character being played by a black guy? If he's a good actor, sure let him do it. It might not be what most readers of any Marvel comic readers expects or are used to, but it is up to the director of the movie to decide. So... CCC? Please be quiet and see what happens, alright?

I agree with the final buzz lightyear quote...the people at CCC are obviously sad little people with so rubbish a life that they must go around trying to find fault where fault DOES NOT EXIST!!!

But as they probably have a timeshare on their single braincell, you have to pity them...and maybe post comments on their site explaining why their views are stupid, outdated and pointless.

Also just throwing it out here, but as cool as Heimdall is, his role in the movies is going to probably barely be a bit part, a "your majesty the bifrost bridge remains secure" and that's it. This seems like a disproportionate reaction. I mean if Thor or Odin were made black then we could start really complaining.

My thoughts. But then again, I think I can cope with it here.

You know, if Marvel Comics' Thor had, really, anything to do with the actual Norse mythology except for character or place names, it might rate a raised eyebrow. But it doesn't, not really.

If you are pissed that a black guy is playing Heimdall, then you should be pissed that Loki's got black hair (he has red in the mythology). Or that Valhalla isn't a great hall with golden shields on its roof, rather than a Sci-Fi inspired tower extravaganza.

And honestly, while assumptions can be made, I don't believe there's any description of Heimdall in any of the stories, so it's possible he could have been black, since in the Gylfaginning Odin makes a point of explaining to King Gylfi that whatever god you worship in whatever land you live, you simply got Odin's name wrong.

Now, where in the Eddas or the writings of Snorri Sturluson does it specify that Heimdall was white? I don't remember reading about it.
My only gripe with this movie is that it's probably going to suck. Norse mythology was my favourite thing to read about when I was a boy, and I hate to see it get (possibly) butchered by a mediocre action movie knock-off.

Wow. People REALLY are gonna boycott Thor because a black man is playing Heimdall?

Y'know, there's only so much stupid one can take before it starts to hurt. THIS FAR SURPASSES IT. I'm sorry, there's just SO MUCH STUPID in this story it physically hurts.

*sigh* Marvel already made them superbeings from space. What fucking difference does the skin color of a supporting character make?
That's why I'm okay with it here. If they made a Lord of the Rings movie with a black Aragorn, for example, I'd seriously be mad.

Norse gods were white because the people who worshipped them were white. Period.
So ofcourse someone is bugged about it. Even I find it fricking stupid. But do I care that much about it? Nah. A shit movie where a black dude plays Thor? Sounds like something I wouldnt even rent.
No, Thor isn´t cast as a black dude, Someone else is. I mean, I´m fine with people with whatever colour appearing in whatever movie, but Thor has been described over and over again as a blond giant of a man. So they´d be going a little far to cast him black.

Idris Elba is Heimdall, not Thor.

I kind of understand the reason why they casted Elba as Heimdall.
If you've watched Luther or the wire, the man just has so much character. He just oozes charisma.

The CCC clearly are idiots and have no idea what they're talking about. Modern day Europe was made from the mingling of many different races.
That is the truest statement I've ever read. I've recently begun watching the Wire, and besides Omar, Elba's character is my favorite regardless of morality. I love him as an actor.

I actually have to agree with the CCC here. I hate how things put in black people and people of other races just to be Politically correct. I have no problem when it is naturally done. Although Nick Fury is white when I saw him as black it didn't feel to artificial. When I saw Hamlet(Kenneth Brannagh version I am seeing a pattern here.) and one of the ambassadors from Norway(I think it was Voltemand) was Black I hated it. It just felt like he was there so they could have 1 black cast member with a named part. No other main character was black. He felt like he was there for that sole reason.

I have nor problem if a character is black, asian or white as long as it fits into pre established which this could due to the rebirth thing they have in comics. Although I do think if this were the other way around and Static Shock or Cyborg or War Machine or Green Lanturn(John Stewart one) as anythign but black people would go ape shit insane.

Well man has always created God in his image, ancient Northern mythology surely was no exception.

And to be honest the only reason I can imagine why they'd pick a mixed cast is obsessive political correctness. It's like that fuss about black Hobbits. It has nothing to do with racism, it's just about the industry being terrified of the rage of a pathetic group of misinformed people who are blindly obsessed with being discriminated.
I love the serious lack of attention to this post which makes much more sense than putting a black guy in a movie to seem PC.
