Wow.. had to laugh for about 10 mins when I read what these people were pissed off at about, seriously anyone who really believes that a black man can't play a "made up white Nordic god" has way to much free time.

Honestly? I hate that they made him black. Not because they made him black (it's annoying to the fans, but otherwise perfectly fine to change a character's appearance if you feel it should be something else) but because of what appears to be their reason behind it: to appeal to minorities. One should NEVER let the offense of another person get in the way of creative freedom.

It's one thing to put a race down for no reason. But it's just as bad to raise any one race up for no reason. Every race is just that - a race. No better or worse than any other, they just look different. And skin color should have no more effect on cast - positive OR negative - than eye color.

EDIT: if i happen to be wrong and they picked a black man because he's a good actor for the role, hey, more power to em =)

D'oh! Ninja'd!

Well, needless to say, I agree with Redlin. While we're on that note, why would a God even bother with race? Your an all powerful being from a dimension outside all comprehension, why are you gonna show up in one colour or another based on present company's expectations? Y'know, Hades, Greek God of the Underworld, was described as being Black.

Concerning the film, I have no qualms with Idris Elba as an Aesir. Man obviously won the part on his own merits and I'm a big enough fan of Kenneth Branagh and his movies to trust any decision he makes. On a whole, this is just stupid.

Honestly, I don't really care. Maybe I would if I were invested in the whole Thor comics. And I wouldn't be upset because they had the nerve to make a character black, but rather because they screwed up his appearance (totally different). As it is, I couldn't care less. I'll probably go see this movie because it does look pretty good, and I probably won't care that one guy is black in it. As long as he plays the part well, I couldn't care less.

I just have one other thing to say. We should all boycott the CCC. Just ignore them. Like any good troll they feed off your attention. And keep this in mind: Being called a racist is an insult. Even actual racists think it is an insult. So we gotta be making some progress.

Norse gods were white because the people who worshipped them were white. Period.
So ofcourse someone is bugged about it. Even I find it fricking stupid. But do I care that much about it? Nah. A shit movie where a black dude plays Thor? Sounds like something I wouldnt even rent.
but who cares who plays a norse god? black white asian. there a freaking GOD i am sure they can take on what ever form they want.
And why would they take on the form of a people who dont even worship them?

Still its a shit movie. Its a movie based on a comic book written by Marvel thats about "Thor" fcol.
I'm gonna call you out on this for 2 things:-

1) It's a Marvel film connected to Iron Man and will be connected to The Avengers, and is being made after Marvel learnt from their mistakes before

2) How the fuck can you honestly say it'll be a shit film? Seriously, it's still being made, there has been, what, 1 trailer and a teaser at the end of Iron Man 2?

A black guy plays an originally white character, so people complain.

But if all the cast is the same nationality as the source material, people will complain because the film is too white.

You just can't win anymore.

It's absolutely fantastic when my religion gets "helped" with "good press" because of such "reasonable" actions. All it means is that I spend most of my social time explaining to everyone that just because I'm a strong believer in Jesus that I'm a close minded fool who loves Hitler.

Did anyone raise a stink when the Daredavil movie had Kingpin as a black dude? Just wondering. Not that I had a problem with it, I like the guy that played him, it just bothered me more for continuity than anything else. Same reason I didn't like the fact that they changed Stark's buddy in Iron Man 2. Continuity is all wrong. >.>

Last I checked, the gods of the Scandinavian poeples were not superheroes. Thor is not THOR. He's just a superhero using that name. If Heimdall is black in this movie, then so be it. He isn't the Heimdall of antiquity.

No problem. We all slip up. I read the post, and it was a little bit of an ad hominem argument. These groups are definitely racist, judging from the other quotes from their site. That's why they're taking issue with this casting decision. Just because a racist says a casting decision is weird, however, doesn't automatically make the casting decision logical.

I'd argue that if god was black that wouldn't help the end of racism.
