Uh, post-apocalyptic =/= Fallout rip off. This whole rip-off nonsense is getting ridiculous...
When I first saw the trailer it seemed a lot like Fallout 3 to me. It had the same greyish-slightly-green tint, the only human you saw looked a lot like a Fallout 3 human and the monsters looked slightly like super mutants and feral ghouls.

From what I have seen no. There is room for more wasteland FPS games, and it hasn't clearly copied Fallout 3 and NV in every way shape and form which is what I use the label "rip-off" for.

pff.. People spend years on these projects to try to make the very best they can do. "Rip-off" feels a bit misplaced for a project like RAGE.

That's the fault of the marketing people, then. Unlike fallout 3, Rage is a shooter with slight rpg elements, a linear plot and a completely different aesthetic.

If you had to call it a rip-off, Borderlands would be closer despite the two games being still rather different.

Also, the escapist ate my post earlier, so excuse this if it's a repeat.

Every post apocalyptic game is suddenly a Fallout rip-off now? Is STALKER a Fallout ripoff then? Metro 2033?

What exactly is the criteria?

I would get Rage, but I heard some terrible things about the PC port, so I'm going to hold off on buying it.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is not post-apocalyptic, it's rather set in an exaggerated version of the area around Chernobyl.

OT: Since Rage wont be released until Friday here, and I wont be released until Friday next week (I got 2 exams, 1 lab exercise, 1 assignment that are all next week) I will have to wait to share my opinion of it. It looks fun however.

I'm loving it so far.

The gameplay is actually pretty fresh, with combat being much more fluid than Borderlands or Fallout. And the whole "enemies are bullet sponges" thing is actually entirely false. A headshot still works, and the shotgun satisfyingly blows away enemies at close range.

People actually think that RAGE rips off Fallout? No, no one is so stupid as to think that Fallout invented the idea of a post-apocalyptic wasteland adventure, right? And people must realize that there was at least 2 Fallout games made before Fallout 3, right?

Right?
Ive been playing and loved fallouts 1 and 2 for years, but despite how popular fallout 3 is, almost everyone i know knows that there must be a fallout 1 and 2, but have never played it or know anything about it.
Might just be me, but the original fallouts, despite been classics, are kinda ignored these days.

Apparently they started making this game 7 years ago so it's not actually a Fallout rip off.

Does look like they influenced each other though.
Thank you for pointing this out and I love your name and I've been taking care of the type of dog in your picture, just thought I'd share, the lil' guy is so darn cute!

In part, I think it's because a lot of modern gamers refuse to play anything that isn't first-person or over-the-should third-person.

And then, in part, it's because of the slow pace the original games had.

Personally, though... the reason I never finished the second game was mostly bugs. As I recall, though, I did make it to the Enclave base. And I finished the first game.

EDIT: On topic... I have Rage pre-ordered, and I'm quite looking forward to it. While the premise is awfully close to that of the Fallout series, I've seen enough gameplay and environmental design to know that it's going to be vastly different.

As soon as I saw the first gameplay, I knew what it would be. A Fallout rip-off. Yeah, it may be also a rip-off of Borderlands and other stuff, but the good side of Bethesda is stuck and nailed to making just one type of game. MORROWIND, OBLIVION, FALLOUT 3, FALLOUT: NEW VEGAS, SKYRIM...they're all the same, and I'll keep RAGE on that list too. Atleast until I play it.

PS: While The Elder Scrolls and Fallout games are good, I think RAGE won't be.

i always thought rage thought it was chaneling a mad max vibe.

reviews said character animation was a highlight in both npc's and enemy's that's what's selling the game for me.

I thought it was a Mad Max rip off myself...just like Wasteland/Fallout was...

...They say people don't believe in heroes anymore. Well damn them! You and me, Max. We're gonna give'em back their heroes!

As much as I love Fallout I don't believe that everything post-apocalytpic should be considered a Fallout ripoff, that's just unfair and ignorant.

Well the game has finally come, and its time to see if its just a fallout rip off, or atleast a good one. I plan on posting once i get into the game, but for now, who still thinks its just a rip off. Also, on a side note, one of the towns is called wellsprings?! anyone who has played fallout NV will probably see it the same as i do, that that sounds like a rip off of goodspring (first town in F:NV)
What the fuck else are you going to call a starter town? Nondescript Starterton?
Springs are the sources of mighty rivers, so there's like a 33% chance any given RPG is going to start in a town with "spring" in the name.

Other than that, fun little drinking game, find a list of all the cities in your state (or country if you're one of those godless, un-American heathens xP) and take a shot for every one with some translation of "spring" in the title.

Well everything I've seen up until now hasn't made me interested whatsoever in the game, and now that it's out everything I've heard isn't likely to change that.

Yes...yes it is. From my perspective, Borderlands meeting Fallout is a good thing. Especially if id is making said game.

I spent about five hours playing it and I'm having lots of fun.

It's sort of an open-world game if the world was made up of really large corridors :)

The closest thing to a disappointment so far have been the shooter levels, which are extremely linear and drab. Otherwise a few quibbles, such as lack of a mini-map in town (I spent more time than I should have looking for the Mayor's office upon entering the city). Mostly, it's just fun and if you enjoy the racing aspect of the game, there's quite a lot to do.
