I'd just like to recommend keeping an eye on KMOV repoter Cory Stark's twitter feed [https://twitter.com/CoryStarkKMOV] because really, after all this bullshit, to see the situation turn around like this... It gives me a huge smile on my face. I hope it'll get added to the OP.

Sure, it's not strictly a race issue anymore, but I'd say it's still a pretty big part of it. This entire incident is the result of racial profiling after all.
Actually, I'd argue that racial profiling is just the top layer, as it were.

The actual reason lies a lot deeper than racial profiling; police forces becoming disconnected from their communities and becoming so trained in fighting the war on drugs and terror that they're losing sight of their original purpose; to protect and serve the public.

What does this have to do with anything? If the boy was shot for legally carrying a forearm you would probably see this, but this is a protest against police brutality.

OT: I hope this gets more media attention. Hell, maybe we will even see federal action! The way the Ferguson police department is handling this is disgusting.

You know, I was drinking with this middle aged Japanese women in Osaka once, and she remarked how she admired the United States fro being so diverse.

I wonder what she would think if I sent her this.

Well, if nothing else, the St. Louis county police have experienced a weapons-grade variety of the Streisand Effect.

You think the police aren't too militarized? Look at this picture.

You'd be entirely excused in thinking that this was a National Guard squad. But no- those are police officers, patrolling an American city in an armored vehicle (apparently this model [http://www.lencoarmor.com/law-enforcement/bearcat-variants/]) with a roof turret, and carrying assault rifles.

"The police used to watch over the people; now they're watching the people." Charles Manson said that. How fucked up is this country when Charles Manson is a voice of wisdom?!

I haven't done enough research on this to feel comfortable saying much, but here are some good resources to see what's going on.

What's there not to understand? I was comparing how black folks get killed for apparently possessing a threat even though they are unarmed, while rich white dudes in the same state can walk into a restaurant with fully loaded assault rifles and get away with it.

It's not like the cops there don't have a racism [http://america.aljazeera.com/blogs/scrutineer/2014/8/14/st-louis-county-policepreviouslyscrutinizedforracialbias.html].

And in case you disagree, you should know that the Missouri governor has relieved the entire County Police [http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/08/14/1321549/-Missouri-Governor-announces-St-Louis-County-Police-to-be-relieved-of-their-duties-in-Ferguson#] and brought in the National Guard for mishandling the situation.
What happened is the opposite of what the quote you posted is about, which I find a little funny, but then I do understand that you meant that the police in Ferguson is the exact opposite of what it's supposed to be. Which, indeed, I agree with.
I don't understand. Doesn't the post say that the county police is being relieved of their duty? The one thing I got wrong is that they are actually bringing in the State Highway Patrol, not the National Guard, to relieve them.

As shitty and appalling as this whole deal is, it's small time compared to what's going on in Israel. Children are being beheaded and having their heads put on spikes for all to see.
You're mixing up the Hamas-Israel conflict with IS' incursion in Iraq here. Hamas is being very questionable, but at least they're not beheading Yezidist children.
My bad, I only hear about it yesterday (I avoid the news most of the time. Too fucking depressing) and I thought it was Israel.

Frankly, as protests in Egypt and Ukraine and other countries have shown us, sometimes brutal police abuse can and should lead to an equal response.

The more police escalate the situation by prohibiting media coverage and attacking peaceful protestors, the more they deserve whatever happens to them.

They think it's a war-zone and act like it's one towards fellow Americans? I hope they learn what a real one is.

(Also, it's pretty damn clear that looters are not protestors, but are using the protest as a diversion.

Someone is going to need to have serious words with the St Louis county police...

I hate to be the one to break the moment of joy that the state police actually know how to do their damn jobs but what is going to happen once the state police leave?

Allowing ANY of the police responsible for this... to come back and start policing the community again is a monstrously bad idea. People wont forget what they did. The resentment is rightfully gonna run very deep. How on earth do you repair the relations at the county level, the state police is just a temporary measure. Do they fire every police officer? Have a "re training"? How on earth can the community ever trust their local police ever again?

More to the point the state police captain made such a good point. Why DO the police turn up to every protest and form a wall even when said protest is peaceful? It just seems like making conflict for the sake of it. A "Theres a wall of protesters ERGO we need a wall of police" mentality. Theres just no reason to stand against them in such a symbolically combative way. Just stand to the side and make sure violence doesnt erupt.

The double standards at play here are fishy to the extreme.

What a good and powerful example. Thank you. You think any person from Fergusson could do this and not end up a bullet riddled mess in 30 seconds flat? Honestly it seems unlikely. Ask yourself why that is.

It's been suggested that that is intentional. Going in heavy handed, provoke a response, and you're justified beating the hell out of a bunch of mindless criminals. Though, kettling is a bit more subtle.

Also, the protestors are protesting against the police themselves. That's likely to rile the police up.

People wonder why protests tend to have 'armed' branches these days. It's because of stuff like this.

I'm a pacifist but I can certainly see why some activists train people in their protests how to cite their rights and keep together when the smoke is dropped.

EDIT: And they gassed their own senator?

Heads will roll over this.

Yeah, I was just saying that your (or rather, Adama's) quote is about the military going bad, not the police.

Protests were peaceful last night after Captain Ron Johnson of the Missouri Highway Patrol got rid of police lines and armored vehicles and riot gear and let people move about freely. So it seems people are more likely to trust the police when they let the media in and aren't more heavily armored than soldiers patrolling the streets of Baghdad. Whoda thunk it?

Sweet.

Oh man though, the comments from that McCullough guy are pretty bloody hilarious. I mean, they put someone in charge who manages to calm the situation damn near overnight and this guy is calling the appointment disgraceful, says it denigrated the cops and puts people in danger.

I mean, come on. Calming the situation = putting people in danger?

What a fucking clown.

Oh, I see. I was rather going for the 'militarization of the police' angle, considering the guy I was quoting was equating the police with the military.

So it looks like the Ferguson Police Force can't even make a convincing cover story, because it sure doesn't sound like Wilson was going after Brown and his friend for robbery. Even if Wilson was Brown was apparently still surrendering or fleeing unarmed when he was shot.

blacknoonajade said:
This is the incident report that the Ferguson police just produce. Now if you don?t know, this morning they FINALLY named the killer of Michael Brown as Darren Wilson. Along with naming Darren as the killer, the Ferguson police are now trying to link Michael Brown with a robbery that happened supposedly MOMENTS before.

Michael was killed at 12:01 and this robbery was at 11:54.

There are so many questions.

We?ve seen the surveillance photos they?ve produced that shows someone who looks like Michael being aggressive with a store owner over an apparent box of swishers. (If you don?t know, Swishers are cigar papers you can pick up for like?2 for .50.
They are saying that Officer Darren Wilson was responding to that robbery.
They are calling it an STRONG ARMED ROBBERY
A strong armed robbery is using, involving, or threatening the use of physical force or violence to gain an objective:
Okay, got that bullshit out of the way
The dispatch tapes that were released mention NOTHING ABOUT A ROBBERY.
NOT ONE WORD
THE ONLY THING MENTIONED WAS A SHOOTING AND REQUEST FOR CROWD CONTROL.
THAT?S IT
So how did Officer Wilson FIND OUT about the robbery?
They?ve now listed Dorian Johnson (THE ONLY OTHER EYEWITNESS WHO WAS THERE) as the second accomplice to the robbery.
The same Dorian Johnson who has been trying (in vain) to talk with the Ferguson Police Department about Michael?s Death since LAST SATURDAY.
So this man who is this SECOND SUSPECT IN A ROBBERY CASE IS PLEADING WITH YOU AND IS ALL OVER NATIONAL NEWS AND YOU ARE REFUSING TO SEE HIM. BUT HE?S A SUSPECT IN A ROBBERY. OKAY
When Officer Wilson sees both Michael and Dorian his initial reaction was "GET THE FUCK ON THE SIDEWALK."
Not any kind of reaction dealing with them being robbery suspects.
From some of the pictures (I?m not going to post them due to the family?s wishes) if you compare the footage from the store and the footage from Michael?s death, he?s swapped from Nike sandals to Sneakers. This red hat cannot be found (this is speculation).
If the reason Office Wilson approached them was because they were suspects in an robbery WHY DIDN?T HE CALL IT IN? WHY DIDN?T HE FOLLOW PROCEDURE? WHY WOULD HE ROLL UP ON ROBBERY SUSPECTS IN HIS VEHICLE? WHY DID IT TAKE 6 DAYS FOR THIS TO BE ANNOUNCED?

I implore you. IMPLORE YOU to take a look into the presented facts of the case. This is just an incident report, we do not have access to the investigative report. There has been no reports presented of Michael?s autopsy and this report is contradictory of the second eye witnesses report.

None of this makes sense.

They are putting Michael on trial to dehumanize him, villify him, to make him less human to justify his murder.

And at the end of the day, LET?S JUST SAY MICHAEL DID DO THIS?is petty theft (it was like 5 swisher sweets they say. That?s a two dollars and fifty cents) IS HIS MURDER, HIS EXECUTION, THIS UNARMED SURRENDING TEENAGE BOY, justified by this?

NO.

It?s not.

This is murder. Don?t let them put Michael on trial for HIS DEATH.

So the first post here after the police release an incident report related to the shooting (transparency) claims they are lying, and quotes a random tumbler post that amounts to some random guy ranting online.

This feels like the only way anyone is going to be happy is if we straight up lynch the entire Ferguson Police Department. Just seems like everyone around formed an opinion the first morning they saw the news headlines and any new information that conflicts with that preconceived notion is a lie.

After several days of actively trying to suppress the outflow of information with violence, yeah I'm a little skeptical of what this police department has to say. I linked the tumblr post mostly because it made some interesting arguments/assertions. Which while faaar from anything like "proof" is something to consider, since posts like this are the only other source of news on the subject that this Police force has ALLOWED (or rather, failed to stop) coming out.

We have seen: The Ferguson Police Fire on non-violent protestors. Fire tear gas at journalists. Arrest and detain reporters without charge. And we know they've fired tear gas at a group that included a state senator. I very much doubt she was among a violent crowd of looters when that happened.

Given all this, and what we know about the Ferguson police department's history of racial profiling, this Police Department has lost the benefit of the doubt.

If the FBI comes in and does an investigation that says the shooting was justified that'll be one thing, but not suspecting this department is just trying to cover its own ass right now is another.
