to show you how easy poetry is, I will type a poem off the top of my head

There once was kid named Lee
who knew nothing about art theory
every scribble she made
got her a good grade
while my best mark was a C

Free Verse poetry was the hardest because it was impossible to know what the teacher would want to hear. You can't just write a free verse poem about someone dying or whatever, because she will ask "what is the poem about? BESIDES someone dying!"

To be fair, you also chose a limerick.

I think the different types of poetry only control the rhyming. I could tell the same 'story' with a ABAB rhyme scheme or other. Limericks are usually funny so I thought it would fit in this situation.

I still don't know the difference between a free verse poem and a short story, if anyone is willing to clarify then please do.

I think the people complaining about modern poetry probably don't read much modern poetry. Its like people that complain about modern music, I get the impression that they just aren't looking very hard.

There is nothing inherantly wrong with free verse. Well writen free verse (Allen Ginsberg, John Berryman or Bukowski for example) is better than poorly written standard verse and visa versa. Sure, lots of people nowadays think that they are poets because they can write in non-sequiturs, without poetic meter or rhyme. On the other hand, these people generally have no standing whatsoever in the poetic world.
I must admit I'm slightly confused. What is the difference between a poem in free verse and a short story?
Well, read Howl by Allen Ginsberg, any of John Berryman's Dreamsongs or something along those lines and you will see how they are clearly not short stories.

I'd love to but I really haven't got the time at the moment. If you could just explain I'd be grateful, if you can't then I don't mind.

Free verse does not have grammar and punctuation restrictions.

Get someone who doesn't know much english to write a story and it becomes free verse.

Hahaha but seriously, that's what it is. Free Verse poetry is poetry that does not rhyme. A short story is a story, to the naked eye, a free verse will be more 'loose' and will not tell a story as clear as a short story.

A lot of modern art I don't get/like, but assuming that anyone can do it or that it takes no skill is foolish. Someone already mentioned derisively Pollock, but one of the important skills of an artist is knowing what will be aesthetically pleasing and when to stop. I'm pretty sure if most of us tried splattering a canvas with paint, despite using the same techniques, it wouldn't work nearly as well. Similarly I could replicate all of the pieces that make up a cubist work, but I certainly couldn't make it look good.

In poetry, don't forget that a lot of poems use rhythms and cadences rather than rhyme for flow and connects, therefor is you think there's nothing to something you're reading, you may not be reading it write. Several modern poets have been mentioned already, but I would add to that like Saul Williams who is absolutely brilliant, but to really get his pieces you pretty much have to listen to him reading them. I'm sure you can find examples on youtube.

What is that X factor that makes some people better at scribbling? My theory was that its the image of the person influencing people's thoughts, but I'd like to see other opinions.

I ended up flunking out my literature class (an elective, too...) in high school... It made me feel so dirty, trying to find meanings the author couldn't possible include in his or her works.

Well, I was just pointing out that limericks are one of the simplest forms of poetry. Writing a sonnet with proper meter would be more difficult, and an epic would rival a novel if you keep meter and rhyme through the whole thing.

I'm not sure image is the only thing. I think when Jackson Pollock did his random splish-splashes of paint that nothing like it had been done before and he expected people to take him seriously, or at least acted like it. Perhaps people that that if he was serious then there was a meaning to his paintings and they started analysing it to find out what it was.
Because there was apparently so much to analyse people demanded more of his work to further analyse and interpret it. This is just a thought by the way and I'm not 100% sure if J.P. was the first person to make that kind of art professionally. (After all, just about any child would do it if you gave them a tub of paint.)

I accept your challenge. I'll edit this post with the new and improved poem.

A girl named Lee, came up to me
she wanted to see what I made.
I told her it was a work of art
which will give me the highest grade.

She didn't understand. She said, "listen man,
art isn't about how good it looks.
You have to put your feelings within the canvas
its not clear and blunt like a book."

I thought about it, just for a bit.
I knew skill was more important.
I told her that it was just nonsense.
She sighed for I didn't know what she meant.

On the judging day, she came up to say,
"I've finished my painting, come see."
All I could see were scribbles and dots,
but to my surprise she got a B.

It was my turn to shine, and about time.
I showed the teacher my beauty.
She said, "this doesn't make me feel anything
I'm afraid I'll have to give you a D."

I dislike minimalist art. I once saw an image that was completely white except for a speck of orange in the middle and people were saying how amazing it was and how it evoked so many emotions in them. The artist was just a lazy ass and they were trying to act sophisticated.

I'd rather not, last time I did this I got a complaint for Public Indecency.

... oh, you mean my artistic gift. Of course! Silly me.
If you're getting arrested for it, it's only because the cops are jealous.

And perhaps you could merge your two gifts into some sort of super art.
Super art... fascinating. I will think about it. Maybe I could even start some sort of "public indecency genre"!

Am I the only one to think that this sounds exactly like the opening line to a soft porn movie?

Around where I live there is a giant pile of logs painted green. When I asked why it was there, they told me that it was 'art.'

I want nothing more than to burn that fucking thing to the ground.
Did they give you any details on why it was "art"?

When it comes to modern "art", I think the X factor has something to do with a necessary level of pretension.

Get someone who doesn't know much english to write a story and it becomes free verse.
Not having strict rules is different from "doing whatever the hell you want". If you did "Get someone who doesn't know much english to write a story", it wouldn't be considered free verse, it would be a badly written story. If you got some pretentious teenager to write free verse poetry, it would be technically be free verse, but it would be very bad free verse, in the same way that the Crazy Frog remix is technically music.

I do get the impression in this argument that you haven't actually taken the time to research the subject. If you were to take the examples given already, you would see there is a lot more to free verse than "prose written on lots of differnt lines".

It didn't quite sound like porn to me but I can clearly see you using your sexual and artistic gifts here to twist something nice into a sexy scene. Do some more.
