It's time for another random scenario!! :D I'll set up the situation and get to the chase later.

So, it's a normal day in your life and everything is going great. You look around and spot something sticking out of the ground. It looks like a rather large gem and it seems to be glowing. So, you somehow walk towards the strange jewel and pick it up and suddenly a voice speaks to you. "Thank you for finding me" the jewel says. You look surprised and kind of worried but the voice tries to ease your fear saying that it will not hurt you. the jewel then tells you that it is a wishing crystal, capable of granting any wish! But before you can think about what to wish for, It tells you of how it got here in the first place. It seems that the crystal is actually a prison for an alien princess that was suppose to be next in line to rule her planet, but a jealous family member made sure it would not happen and now she is forced to grant the wish of anyone who picks it up. But the catch is once someone makes the wish, it disappears from the planet. You don't really think its that bad until she tells you that the only way to free her from the prison is to make a wish for her freedom. Then it gets tough to decide what to do.

TL;DR Basically, would you wish for her freedom or would you wish for something that you want? If you answered your own wish, then what would you wish for?

How am I supposed to know she's telling the truth (if it even is a she)? For all I know "she" could be somekind of galactic dark overlord trying to take advantage of my gullible disposition, in the hope I'll set it free so it can conquer the universe.

You raise a good point, but if it was a she and she did mean what she said, what would you do then? :D

I would probably have to take my time and come up with a wish that would cover both her freedom as well as a reward for me.

I'd ask her about her world first! Have a pleasant chat and if it looks like a nifty place to live in, I could perhaps wich to become the ruler of it with her as my trusty conc...I mean, I'd wish for her to return to rule her world with me as her trusty advisor. Yeah, that's what I meant.

I'm not getting involved in alien politics - we haven't been told why she was imprisoned, and for all we know she could have committed genocide or something. I'll just take my free wish and get ownership of a nice big house.

Oh right, forgot to put the reason why I she was imprisoned. It was basically a jealous family member that wanted all the power for themselves. you know how it goes! :D

Honestly I probably ended up having a good long talked with this princess like asking about her apperance, race and her pesonality etc that is unless she state time is of the essence. Her answers and the way she react to my questions will determine if she is geninue telling the truth or manipulating me.

Chances are I would be noble about it by granted her freedom even if she was good at manipulating me. While the latter could lead me dooming mankind but I rather had met my demise out of good intention then being distrustful and paranoia about it in the first place.

So what exactly happens when it dissapear if I wish for my own self? I mean does she get teleported to another planet with the same scenerio?

Yeah, she would bascially get teleported to another planet and the process would start all over again.

I wish for cosmic-level powers(Think the Phoenix entity from Marvel comics). Then I use my cosmic-level powers to zip to her home planet and suss out the whole situation properly. If she was on the up & up I then use my cosmic powers to zip to next planet the gem appears on
and wish for her freedom. If she was lying & some sort of horrendous threat I still use my powers to zip to the next planet the gem appears on, grab the gem & throw it in to Jupiter or something.
Then I use my cosmic powers for awesome shenaniga...Umm, I mean to bring great good to the universe.

My first reaction was free the princess and get some sweet alien queen (air-quote) rewards (air-quote). Then I thought about wishing for omnipotence, so I could free her anyway, even if I have to locate the jewel again somewhere in the nigh-infinite cosmos and go to her, which I could totally do because I'm omnipotent. Then I realized that omnipotence would get really boring eventually.
So, I'm'a go with my gut instinct: Alien queen rewards. What's that? She could be evil? Doesn't matter, had rewards.

Money, lots and lots of money.
The only thing that will make me happy is moving in with my boyfriend, which costs a lot of money which I don't have.
I had to put up with enough crap last year, I deserve a cheap shot. Sorry fairy, freedom is not for you today.

*Cracks knuckles* Well, time to pervert.

Alien PrinCESS, you say? I think I will be the first one ever to sleep with an alien. So my wish would probably be, "I wish to be king of your people, with you as my queen." Then interspecies boning and I get to do MORE retarded things using the treasury of an advanced civilization still using Monarchy...

More wishes.

Failing that, although the scenario is possibly too far removed from my experience to judge properly, I'd free her. Considering she is an alien princess from somewhere with wishing crystals, I'd think she'd be able to grant my wish once she's retaken her throne. Although if she turns out not to be an alien princess but some sort of malevolence cast away in the hopes of never being discovered, well. Guess we're all f***ed. How about I assume I have some way of assessing that she is actually an alien princess and then I'll go with freeing her then wishes, or suitable alien technology to compensate. Unless she then has no way of finding our galaxy or me, in which case I would get no rewards. I don't really know. Maybe I negotiate something with the wishing crystal, it seems like a reasonable type of fellow.

You know a lot of people on this thread seem to think that "alien" means "Humanoid with some little twist like pointy ears or green skin".....how would all the people making wishes that involve boning this princess react if they find that this alien looks like a cross between a giant squid and a pile of dog barf?

I would actually wish that she tells the truth, since I'm not sure. If she did, well... Good luck to her, I guess. She's still trapped forever.

I'd grab the best lawyer and computer engineer I could find and ask them to help me draft a wish that would create a super computer that knows how to create anything and find anything in this universe or otherwise. I then use the information in the computer to create a teleporter and a suit capable of traveling whatever world she ends up at. Second wish goes to her freedom, if some other life-form hasn't wished for it yet.

Wish that I be able to summon the crystal to me whenever I desired. She pops away, I bring her back and make another wish[footnote]Corollary: Before wishing I'd want to find out if she was capable of granting wishes to the same person more than once and whether or not my wishes could affect the gem like that[/footnote]. Then I can figure out if she's lying or not at my leisure. If I determine that she isn't lying, I free her.

I really have no idea, I could wish for her freedom but then I would hear about bad things happening and feel like a bad person for not saving all those dieing bees or whatever.
But if I actually wished for something, I'd probably blow it and regret my wish for the rest of my life.
I wish I knew what to do.
