I was listening to some music earlier, and I'll admit I'm a huge rap fan, and I notice a lot of Escapists' are against rap as a whole. Can anyone give me some reasons for the rap hate?

Not really. I enjoy the occasional rap song but on the whole I tend to veer away from it. No idea why this is, I just do.

Either they hear mainstream hip hop music (which tends not to be the cream of the genre) and hate it, or they hate 50 Cent and thus hate the genre, or they haven't given it a chance and hate it, or they just hate it for the sake of hating it, and those people (the last ones) well...

Or the style of music doesn't appeal to them, which is fine. But if it doesn't appeal then it doesn't give an excuse to hate.

There are more examples, but that'll do.

Probably the prevalence of lowest common denominator generic gangsta (c)rap.

It's a serious problem that for every Rakim there's a hundred T-Pains kicking about.

I don't mind at all that they exist, but it's a shame they seem to be so representative of their genre. But that being said, I'm sure this could apply to other genres too.

There are some rap songs I do like, but I think there's just an overload of terrible rap music that's makes the genre as a whole seem awful.

I'll admit to accepting what is called -ahem- "Old School" rap.

Also I first read the title as "Rape Music"
Is there a song that fits rape? I mean like a scene where someone's getting raped, can you think of a song that would fit such a scene?

[Note to self: Stop letting mind wander]
I've begun to get replies, maybe I should start a thread or something? (Would need one hell of a disclaimer)

True. A lot of rap that I hear just makes me question why people enjoy listening to it.

I get that, though I do listen to that type of rap as well. I guess I just hate how people equate rap like "Well I heard a Soulja Boy song, so now I know rap sucks."

I just see more of this nonsense against rap than anything else. Glad to see there are some occasional listeners on the Escapist :p

RACIST!!!
I tend to shy away from "hardcore" rap, but I do enjoy ones that take make fun of our culture in a clever way. Without talking bout phat bitches, drugs and poppin caps.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the genre at all, I only listen to Immortal Technique.
Dance With The Devil is a shocking song, to say the least.

The Meaning of Life by Disturbed might.

Also, I don't like rap because I was raised on metal and such. It just doesn't appeal to me because of the minimal instrumentation.

For me, I don't mind rap music, it is just the rap which is all about 'Oh yeah I'll fuck you stupid you silly stripper/bimbo/woman'. And seeing as most of the rap songs I hear are about how sexually successful the rapper is(I refuse to call them singers) or about the twenty different ways they want to fuck some girl simply because of her physical attributes, I tend to just shove all rap into a little box and label it shit becasue I cannot be stuffed searching through 50, 000 (give or take) songs trying to find one or two rap songs I like.

Also, most rappers cannot sing and somehow make a career out of sounding either a) stereotypically black OR b)like a hard-ass who is too 'pimpin' to actually sing.

Possibly, may need to check the Old school section of Sirius to make sure I've got the right kind, seeing as you aren't sure what I meant.

Can you think of a Rape song?

Seconded, but there's a catch; as a white male from the 'Redneck' part of Canada, I've NEVER lived in a project/slum environment. All that really means is that I don't identify with 99.9% of the message that commercially successful rappers deliver. I'm not going to argue the validity of rap/hip-hop as a musical genre, but I reserve the right to be unimpressed by 'thugs and ho's, drinking forties, capping bitches and fucking shorties.'

I feel the same way about most commercial music, though; they're almost universally sell-outs, in some fashion.
