I actually heard the song for the first time live performed by an orchestra and a rock-band back at the opening concerts of the Games Convention back in 03 or 04. Suffice to say, I was immediately hooked: it's simply class A, highly memorable VG music and one of the best examples of the somewhat rare guitar music pieces therein. The latest Video Games Live release also has a great rendition btw [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r70wbS7GuVk].
I don't know how you do it but once again you caught me with a severe case of nostalgia here: wasn't my favourite game by a long shot but the few times I played it, it was entertaining and I have a soft spot for that particular piece thanks to a rendition on OCRemix back from, holy shit I'm old, 14 years ago [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBnCqgxtS6o] - that's also what I inevitably compare the original to and leads me to notice the poorer quality of the synths in it....
7/10. Ehhh, it's atmospheric, very much so, but it's very...unpeaceful, which is probably what it was meant to do. Don't like that myself, but it does a good job.
I really like this one, especially since I can actually play this.
6.9/10 Never seen Starship Troopers, so the moment this music plays is lost on me... It's clearly grandiose and celebratory with just a sliver of danger past the halfway point, but it kinda feels a tad simple for my ears.
I know a fair share of Rachmaninoffs piano exploits but I've listened to it far too little during the last few years - this piece really does remind me that I need to rectify that; Maybe a bit too clichéd and too inconsequential at times but undeniably beautiful and determinedly powerful at the same time.
